Abstract

This article underlines the perspective of sacrifice in a flash fiction of Ralph Henry Barbour & George Randolph Osborne entitled Thicker Than Water. Sacrifice is a gift for a better view of the future as it is in line with the short story that shows a sacrifice of a brother to his beloved sister who needs to be blood donated because her blood is thinner than ordinary blood. Through qualitative method in explorative approach, this paper points to the relation between Bataille’s theory and Barbour & Osborne’s short story. In analysis, Barbour & Osborn’s short story shows the sacrifice and sincerity of an older brother who had to donate a lot of blood and even hold the pain for the sake of his younger sister in order to save her from dying. In conclusion, sacrifice in this story is engaged with sincerity in which all goodness of one's self is given to the other.

Abstract

This paper underlines the idea of expressionism in flash fiction of Elliot Flower entitled Winner’s Loss. Expressionism exposes matters of distorted people and object, emotional pain and anguish, unrealistic feelings of modern world, and symbolistic understanding. This story tells about someone who entrusts the money to the main character name Jack and he accidentally loses the money and accuses someone else of being thief. It turns out the money is taken by Jack’s wife because he lies to his wife by saying he did not have the money. By using qualitative method and explorative approach, the analysis includes how any gambling is actually expression of the desperate men. Those who hold to such gambling then are already at loss from the beginning. The money being gambled belongs to anyone but the ones that use it for another useful matter. In conclusion, expressionism in Flower’s flash fiction indicates how the gambling, the loss of money, and the wife’s attitude may intertwine consecutively to show any changing in the story of anyone’s life in general.

Abstract

This paper exposes power relations of governmentality in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story “One of These Days”. Marquez’s story tells about asymmetric relations between a dentist and his city’s Mayor. The writing must be analyzed through Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality, in which power is rationalized in shaping disciplines and anti-resistance. Through the qualitative method, this article explores the accentuations of governmentality in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One of These Days”. Throughout the close reading as the technique of collecting data and content analysis as the technique of data analysis, the analysis includes what the city Mayor does in governmentality as forceful power against the dentist. Governmentality is seen in how corrupt behaviour affects subordinate people by implementing power and discipline. In conclusion, governmentality plays a significant role in Marquez’s story since it shows how power is not static but grows through the abusive behaviour of the subject’s power through the discipline of the object.
