Abstract

This literature review aims to analyse the transformation of Sumba ikat weaving from an ancestral tradition into part of the creative industry that contributes to the local economy and tourism. The research method used is the historical method, namely heuristics, criticism, auffassung, and darstellung and through a systematic literature review of various scientific sources related to Sumba ikat weaving. The results of the study show that the history of Sumba ikat weaving is rooted in the natural wealth and traditional values of the local community, with motifs that have symbolic meanings in social and spiritual life. The transformation of Sumba ikat weaving from tradition to creative industry is marked by the evolution of production techniques, design innovation, and product diversification, despite facing challenges in maintaining the sustainability of natural resources and quality standardisation. The socio-cultural impact of this transformation is seen in the shift in function from the role of customary rituals to commercial products, which affects gender dynamics and the cultural identity of the Sumbanese people. In the global context, Sumba ikat weaving is increasingly integrated into the global supply chain, facing competition with global fashion products while maintaining its uniqueness and authenticity. Ecofeminism and local community empowerment approaches are key in maintaining a balance between cultural values and market demands.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Sumba women weavers in empowering the family economy through the preservation of the ikat weaving culture in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the socio-economic dynamics of weavers' families, women's strategies in managing the ikat weaving business, and its impact on family welfare. The results showed that weaving activities not only functioned as a means of cultural preservation but also became a significant alternative source of income for families. Women weavers play a dual role as custodians of cultural heritage and supporters of the family economy, often making weaving work a 'lifeline' when the family's economic conditions are unstable. However, they still face challenges such as limited access to capital, training, and wider markets. Identified empowerment efforts include improving business management skills, facilitating access to productive resources, and developing marketing networks. This research highlights the importance of integrated support from various stakeholders to optimize the potential of Sumba ikat weaving as an instrument of family economic empowerment while preserving valuable cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study explores the enabling and inhibiting factors that influence the successful achievement of work-life balance among female leaders in multi-sector companies in Indonesia. Despite the growing awareness of the importance of work-life balance, female leaders continue to face complex challenges in balancing professional leadership demands with personal and family responsibilities.Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from twelve married female leaders with a minimum of twelve years of professional experience across various sectors. The data collection methods included closed-ended questionnaires, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns and findings. The results reveal that strong family support systems, flexible work arrangements, output-based performance evaluations, and technological facilitation are the main enablers of successful work-life balance. In contrast, patriarchal organizational cultures, high workloads, inconsistencies in the implementation of flexible policies, and internalized perfectionism serve as the main barriers. This study emphasizes that achieving effective work-life balance among female leaders requires not only formal organizational policies but also cultural transformation and the development of personal leadership resilience. The research contributes to the limited literature on female leadership and work-life balance in the context of multi-sector companies in Indonesia and offers practical recommendations for organizations aiming to foster inclusive and sustainable leadership environments

Abstract

The craft of weaving is not merely an economic or artistic activity, but also plays a central role in the identity and social life of the Sumba community, particularly in the Kodi District of Southwest Sumba Regency. Women in Sumba play a crucial role in the practice of tenun ikat. They are not only the custodians of the skills and technical knowledge of weaving, but also the bearers of cultural values embedded in the process. This research aims to reveal the role of Sumbanese women as preservers of tradition amidst the currents of modernization. This study employs qualitative methods with a descriptive approach through data analysis from interviews, literature review, and documentation. This research explores three main aspects: (1) the meanings that Sumbanese women ascribe to their roles in preserving the tenun ikat tradition, (2) the use of tenun ikat as a medium of cultural identity expression, and (3) the impact of weaving practices on Sumba community’s social and economic dynamics. The findings indicate that Sumbanese women are not merely passive transmitters of tradition, but also active agents who transform and adapt tenun ikat practices to assert their identities and respond to socioeconomic changes. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the intersections between gender, tradition, and social change within the context of Indigenous Indonesian communities, while also highlighting the potential of local knowledge as a source of women empowerment. The implications of this research are relevant for developing cultural preservation policies that are more inclusive and sustainable.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of gender roles influenced by patriarchal culture and modernization on women's participation in the workforce in China. Using the literature review method, this study critically examines relevant previous studies to identify key factors affecting women's participation in the labor force and their implications for economic and social development in China. The results show that China's deep-rooted patriarchal culture has shaped gender stereotypes and social norms that limit women's role in the public sphere, including in the labor market. However, China's modernization process has driven social and economic transformations that have opened up opportunities for women to participate in the workforce. This research also reveals the disparities between urban and rural areas, as well as differences in education levels that affect women's access to and participation in the labor force. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of gender roles and their influence on women's labor force participation in China. The findings of this study can provide more effective policy recommendations to improve gender equality and empower women in economic and social development in China.
