Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) may lead to various complications, including cognitive impairment. The causative factor is the toxic substances accumulation in the body, including serum ureum and creatinine. This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum ureum and creatinine levels with cognitive function in CKD patients. Samples were taken using a consecutive sampling technique on 46 CKD patients who were hemodialyzed at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Indonesian version (MoCA-Ina). Serum ureum and creatinine were measured with a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results showed that CKD patients with cognitive impairment were more likely to be older than 50 years old (54.2%) and male (58.3%), had at least a high school education and above (70.8%), were accompanied by hypertension (75%), and without diabetes mellitus (91.7%). The median serum ureum and creatinine levels in patients with cognitive impairment were 124 mg/dL and 10.05 mg/dL. The relationship between serum ureum and creatinine levels with cognitive function had a 0.039 and 0.768 p-value. There is no relationship between the characteristics of the sample, including age, gender, education level, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus with cognitive function in CKD patients. There is a significant relationship between serum ureum levels and cognitive function, but a non-significant relationship between serum creatinine with the cognitive function of CKD patients.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is one of the highest causes of death due to infection in Indonesia. The death rate will increase if dengue infection develops into dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Children tend to experience DHF and even DSS because their capillary permeability is higher than adults. Being overweight is a risk factor that increases a person's chances of experiencing DSS due to a strong immune response, which causes increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This research aims to determine the relationship between overweight and the incidence of DSS in children. This research was an observational analytical study with the cross-sectional design. Sampling was done by a total sampling technique in pediatric patients treated for dengue hemorrhagic fever at Dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital for the period 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2021. The data was obtained from the medical records of Dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital between November 2023 to January 2024 with a total of 179 sample of DHF children aged 0 – 18 years. Chi-square test was used as statistical test. The results of this research were that DSS cases occurred more frequently in the 5 - 10 year age group (33,5%) with female gender (33%). Most of the sampel had good nutritional status, the most common degree of infection was grade III, duration of fever for 4 – 6 days, and good outcome. Bivariate analysis with the chi-square test obtained a p value of 0.007 (p<0.05). This research is concluded that there is a statistically significant relationship between overweight and the incidence of DSS in children treated for DHF at Dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital.

Abstract

Background: One of the biggest contributors to Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in Indonesia is hypertension in pregnancy (preeclampsia and eclampsia). Apart from that, preeclampsia and eclampsia also have an effect on the health of the fetus which can ultimately cause fetal death. One of the risk factors for preeclampsia and eclampsia is maternal age Objective: This study aims to determine the comparison of maternal age in the incidence of preeclampsia and eclampsia at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang in 2022 Methods: The research design used in this research is a cross-sectional study. The sampling technique in this study was total sampling, the population consisted of all patients diagnosed with preeclampsia and eclampsia at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang in 2022, with total data including 94 out of 177 people. The secondary data used in this study was patients’ medical records that are presented tables. Data processing in this research uses the T-test Result: of this study obtained data on 72 preeclampsia patients and 22 eclampsia patients. The distribution of the highest maternal age group in preeclampsia patients and eclampsia patients is 20-35 years. The mean age of preeclampsia patients was 31.44 years, while the mean age of eclampsia patients was 28.41 years. The p value in this study was 0.025 (p<0.05) Conclusion: in this study there was a significant difference between maternal age in the incidence of preeclampsia and eclampsia at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang in 2022

Abstract

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with oxidative stress playing a pivotal role in colorectal carcinogenesis. The limitations of conventional therapies, including systemic toxicity and drug resistance, have driven the exploration of alternative therapeutic agents derived from natural products. Mimosa pudica Linn. leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anticancer properties; however, their clinical application is limited by poor biopharmaceutical characteristics. The combination of Mimosa pudica leaf extract with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is expected to enhance its biological efficacy through nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems. This study was conducted as an in vitro experimental investigation. Mimosa pudica Linn. leaf extract was prepared using an extraction method and subsequently combined with silver nanoparticles. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH assay, with ascorbic acid serving as a positive control. Cytotoxic activity against the human colorectal cancer cell line HCT116 was assessed using the MTT assay to determine cell viability and IC50 values. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate differences among treatment groups. The results demonstrated that Mimosa pudica Linn. leaf extract exhibited significant antioxidant activity, although it was lower than that of ascorbic acid. In cytotoxicity assays, the leaf extract reduced HCT116 cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, the combination of Mimosa pudica leaf extract with silver nanoparticles produced a more pronounced cytotoxic effect compared to the extract alone, as indicated by a greater reduction in cell viability and lower IC50 values. In conclusion, Mimosa pudica Linn. leaf extract possesses antioxidant and cytotoxic activities against HCT116 colorectal cancer cells. Its combination with silver nanoparticles enhances cytotoxic potency, highlighting its potential as a nanomedicine-based anticancer candidate for colorectal cancer therapy.
