Abstract

The development of digital technology in education requires teachers to develop interactive, engaging, and learner-centered instructional media. However, some elementary school teachers still face challenges in designing and utilizing digital learning media, particularly in Social Studies (IPS) instruction. This community service program aimed to improve teachers’ understanding and skills in developing interactive digital-based Social Studies learning media. The program was conducted at SD Inpres Oeba 2 using a participatory approach through several stages, including planning, training implementation, media development practice, mentoring, and evaluation. The activities were carried out through material presentation, discussions, demonstrations, case studies, hands-on practice, consultations, and reviews of learning media developed by the teachers. The results showed that the training and mentoring activities contributed positively to improving teachers’ abilities to design digital-based Social Studies learning media. Teachers were able to develop media that integrated text, images, videos, digital resources, and interactive activities according to learning objectives and students’ characteristics. The program also increased teachers’ participation and confidence in utilizing digital technology to support Social Studies learning. The developed media have the potential to support the presentation of learning materials in a more systematic, concrete, engaging, and contextual manner. Therefore, practice-based training and mentoring can serve as relevant strategies for strengthening the digital competence of elementary school teachers. Further training and continuous mentoring are recommended to ensure the sustainable improvement and implementation of teachers’ skills in developing digital learning media in classroom instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore teachers’ experiences in designing Social Studies learning based on local wisdom in elementary schools. The study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to understand teachers’ subjective experiences in understanding, designing, and implementing Social Studies learning that integrates local sociocultural contexts. The participants consisted of elementary school teachers and a school principal who had experience implementing learning based on the local social and cultural environment. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation of teaching modules, learning materials, instructional media, and students’ assignments. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that teachers understand local wisdom as a learning resource encompassing culture, history, social values, economic activities, community habits, and everyday social life. Teachers’ strategies included utilizing the surrounding environment, local stories, observation, discussion, and students’ personal experiences. However, implementation still faced several challenges, including limited references, teaching materials, time, facilities, and institutional support. Phenomenologically, teachers’ experiences indicate that local wisdom-based Social Studies learning is understood as a pedagogical adaptation process that connects the curriculum with students’ lived realities. This study emphasizes the importance of teacher creativity and school support in developing Social Studies learning that is contextual, meaningful, and rooted in the sociocultural life of the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Digital Storytelling media in improving students’ social literacy in Social Studies learning at SD Inpres Naikoten 1, Kupang. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The participants consisted of 64 fifth-grade students, comprising 32 students in the experimental class and 32 students in the control class. The experimental class received Social Studies instruction using Digital Storytelling media, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through social literacy tests, student activity observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, Independent Sample t-test, and Normalized Gain analysis. The results showed that the experimental class achieved a higher posttest mean score of 87.63 compared with 73.28 in the control class. The Independent Sample t-test produced a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, the experimental class obtained an N-Gain score of 0.69, while the control class obtained 0.35. These findings indicate that Digital Storytelling is more effective than conventional learning in improving students’ social literacy. The integration of narration, images, animation, video, music, and reflective questions creates a more contextual, interactive, and meaningful learning experience. Digital Storytelling also encourages students to analyze social problems, communicate ideas, collaborate, demonstrate empathy, and formulate responsible solutions. Therefore, Digital Storytelling can be considered an effective and innovative learning medium for supporting Social Studies learning and strengthening elementary school students’ social literacy in the context of 21st-century education and the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.
