Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a critical stage requiring adequate nutrition for long-term health. Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to iron deficiency, which increases the risk of anemia and stunting. Enhancing adolescent girls' knowledge of nutrition through health education, which can be delivered using tools such as flipcharts, can prevent and address stunting. Method: This quasi-experimental study involved 541 adolescent girls aged 12–18 years, with a purposive sample of 91 participants divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received flip chart-based education, while the control group did not. The study was conducted in Kalurahan Triharjo and Pandowoharjo, Sleman, DI Yogyakarta. Data were collected using validated pre- and post-intervention questionnaires and analyzed with Wilcoxon and paired t-tests. Result: The intervention group showed significant improvements in knowledge and attitudes about nutrition. Knowledge scores increased from 14.42 ± 2.388 at pretest to 19.36 ± 0.883 at posttest (mean difference: 4.94, p = 0.001). Attitude scores rose from 59.04 ± 8.512 to 75.31 ± 2.410 (mean difference: 16.27, p = 0.001). In the control group, smaller increases were observed for both knowledge (mean difference: 0.73, p = 0.001) and attitudes (mean difference: 4.13, p = 0.036). Conclusion: Flip chart-based education effectively improves adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes about nutrition for stunting prevention. However, external exposure to nutrition information in the control group was a limitation. Future research should minimize such exposure by limiting information to basic content for control groups.

Abstract

Health knowledge is a fundamental factor in maintaining the well-being of individuals and communities. Women play a central role as agents of change in promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. This activity aims to conduct online health education to improve women's health knowledge. The educational intervention was conducted online, covering topics such as healthy lifestyles, women's roles, and the creation of a healthy generation, accompanied by pretests and posttests to assess changes in knowledge. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores, from an average of 3.94 to 4.76 after the intervention (p < 0.05). Online education offers advantages such as ease of access, time flexibility, and empowerment potential for women who often carry dual roles in both family and community settings. However, challenges remain, including internet access limitations and the lack of face-to-face interaction. Online health education has proven effective in enhancing women's health knowledge and should be further developed through improved technical infrastructure and diverse educational content to ensure sustainable long-term impact.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health has emerged as a pressing global concern, particularly in light of the growing and intensive use of social media among high school students. While social media platforms offer avenues for communication and self-expression, they also contribute to adverse psychological outcomes, including anxiety, stress, and depression. This study explores the role of social determinants—such as socioeconomic status, family dynamics, peer support, and digital literacy—in shaping the mental health effects of social media use among adolescents. Employing a literature review methodology, the study analyzed 25 relevant national and international journal articles sourced via Google Scholar using the keywords: “social determinants,” “social media,” “mental health,” and “adolescents.” The findings reveal a strong correlation between frequent social media engagement and heightened mental health disorders, exacerbated by contextual factors such as inadequate parental supervision, limited emotional support, and peer norms that prioritize online validation. These insights underscore the urgent need for integrated, cross-sectoral interventions involving families, schools, and community stakeholders. Strengthening adolescents’ psychosocial resilience through targeted digital literacy education and robust social support systems is essential to mitigate the negative impacts of social media and promote overall mental well-being.
