Abstract

Globalization has brought significant changes in various aspects of human life, including the representation of gender in advertisements. This study aims to critically analyze the representation of gender change in electronic advertisements using a qualitative method, analyzed through Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. The advertisements chosen for analysis are “Segampang Itu Nyuci Noda Kalau Ada Proclin” and the Sunlight product advertisement featuring a man, “Wih kok bisa Sunlight sebagus ini!”. The analysis is carried out using the three dimensions of discourse analysis identified by Fairclough: text, discourse practice, and social practice. The analysis results show that the representation of gender change in these electronic advertisements indicates that both ads function not only as tools for product promotion but also as instruments for social change. These advertisements support the discourse of gender equality and have the potential to influence public perceptions of gender roles within the household. Thus, advertisements do not merely reflect social reality but can also shape and alter societal views regarding the division of gender roles.

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of urbanites who are scavengers and live above the Rangkah grave in Surabaya. Researchers use qualitative studies with in-depth interviews to describe their lives. This study uses the phenomenological theory initiated by Alfred Schutz. The results of this study show that the study subjects had experience of living in limited conditions when they were in the village. These limited conditions became the reason for them to urbanize to the city of Surabaya. However, their lives in Surabaya were no better than before, due to inadequate skills and education - they even had to experience new challenges in the form of stigmatization of their work as scavengers. An experience they never had when living in the village. In the end, amidst the limited life in the city, they had to live in the cemetery area.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has developed an elderly care program through Posyandu Lansia, a community-based health service at the lowest administrative level. However, this program tends to overlook the cultural and economic dynamics that influence medical treatment for dependent elderly individuals. This article examines the relationship between culture and economy in the medical treatment choices of dependent elderly individuals. The research employs an ethnographic method, collecting data through observations, in-depth interviews, kinship diagrams, and life history analysis. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of dependent elderly individuals and informal caregivers. The data were analyzed descriptively through case studies of dependent elderly individuals. The findings reveal that elderly medical treatment is carried out simultaneously through both traditional and modern medicine. Dependent elderly individuals are often labeled as suffering from sakit tuo (old-age illness). This term has dual meanings: it refers both to the socioeconomic condition of the elderly, who are no longer able to engage in social and economic activities and therefore require family care, and to the physical and psychological health deterioration that occurs with aging, which is treated using both traditional and modern medicine. Economically disadvantaged dependent elderly individuals can only access medical treatment from midwives and community health centers puskesmas, as these services are relatively low-cost. In contrast, wealthier elderly individuals can afford private medical practitioners and hospital treatment. This disparity makes impoverished elderly individuals more vulnerable in receiving adequate care in the future.
