Abstract

This research aims to find out the characteristics of MOOC-based instructional material for the flipped English speaking class  and the model of MOOC-based instructional materials for flipped English speaking class The researchers implemented the initial phase of qualitative research to achieve their objectives. The study focused on students in the English Language Education (ELE) Department at Indonesian Higher Education, as well as the ELE program's lecturers. The findings revealed that the MOOC-based materials for the flipped-English speaking class were a need analysis to be supportive, accommodating, goal-oriented, and focused on both fluency and accuracy. These materials were diverse, up-to-date, engaging, and motivating. They included both monologues and dialogues suitable for formal and informal contexts, and also incorporated tools relevant to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as WhatsApp and Edmodo. The proposed model for MOOC-based materials in the flipped-English speaking class emphasized the integration of key elements: goals, content, activities, venue, and media. The goal was to help learners become proficient in speaking by mastering content that included various topics, language uses, and genres. The model engaged students in nine activities: guessing I, identifying, searching, finding, guessing II, clarifying, evaluating, reflecting, and projecting. The recommended learning venues were both online (using platforms like WhatsApp and Edmodo) and offline (such as classrooms, language labs, and outdoor settings). For media, the model suggested using laptops, LCD projectors, and leaflets during the learning sessions.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ perception on the use of ICT in ESP class. This research employed a qualitative case study. The semi structured interview was used to collect the data. The data from the interview were analyzed with Thematic Analysis using Nvivo R14 software. The qualitative data analysis resulted in two primary themes supported with several subthemes. The two primary themes are teachers’ positive perception and teachers’ challenges. The teachers perceived ICT facilitates ESP teaching and it makes teaching more enjoyable. However, the challenges such as the increase of copy-paste/cheating habits, limited internet access and the difficulty of monitoring students still occur during the class. The findings of this study would give a better insight of what constitutes an environment that is conducive for learning where ICT is integrated into the classroom especially ESP class.

Abstract

The increasing demand for high-quality academic publications has prompted the exploration of innovative tools to streamline the research process. We conducted a study to explore how graduate students perceive using tools like Publish or Perish (PoP) and VOSviewer to improve their research productivity. The research uses a mixed-method approach including surveys and interviews of graduate students in the Universitas Negeri Makassar postgraduate program. The results show that PoP allows effective literature searches and citation analysis, and VOSviewer enables a wide coverage visual exploration of bibliometric data, including research mapping and trend analyses. However, issues concerning technical know-how and tool access were highlighted. This study highlights the promising potential of incorporating PoP and VOSviewer into the existing academic writing curricula to help graduate students develop impactful work. The paper also discusses recommendations for better tool utilization and overcoming known challenges.

Abstract

The current research aimed at analyzing the EFL students' speaking skill development through digital social media inside university context. Many researchers conducted their research outside universities but it is still rare to explore existing aspects, both inside university. The study design used the ethnographic study. The study was conducted at two Indonesian universities. Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare (UMPAR), located in Parepare, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang (UMS Sidrap), located in Sidrap, South Sulawesi. The subjects of this study were three lecturers and six students who are familiar with using digital social media in speaking development. The data collection methods were observations, lecturers’ interviews and students interviews. The techniques for analyzing data in ethnographic research are descriptive labels, selecting, identifying, generalizing, and noting. This study showed that in speaking development, several social media platforms inside universities were utilized in their teaching and learning process. The students developed their speaking skill development through digital social media in some ways in universities context: making appointments with strict guidelines, adapting speaking activities to different learning styles with the help of digital social media in classroom and understanding the function of digital social media in developing speaking skills for the students in classroom.

Abstract

In the era of artificial intelligence (AI)–driven education, integrating emerging technologies into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy remains a critical challenge, particularly in balancing linguistic improvement and affective well-being. Despite growing research on digital tools, few studies have empirically examined how AI-assisted podcast creation can simultaneously enhance speaking fluency and alleviate foreign language anxiety (FLA) among Gen Z learners. This study employed a mixed-method design to investigate these dual outcomes among 120 undergraduate EFL students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Participants were divided into an experimental and a control group, with the former engaging in AI-enhanced podcast projects using Podcastle and ElevenLabs, while the latter conducted traditional oral presentations. Quantitative data from pre- and post-tests and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) were triangulated with qualitative data from reflective journals and focus group interviews. Statistical analyses revealed significant gains in speaking fluency (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.85) and a substantial reduction in anxiety levels (p < .01). Thematic analysis further indicated that AI-assisted podcasting fostered greater learner autonomy, digital confidence, and emotional regulation. These findings substantiate the pedagogical value of AI-driven multimodal production tasks and provide an evidence-based framework for integrating technology, fostering affective learning, and developing communicative competence in EFL contexts. The study underscores the transformative role of AI in reshaping 21st-century language education and provides a timely contribution to the global discourse on human–AI collaboration in learning.
