Abstract

In this new era, people use social media to share information and discuss political, social, and religious issues, leading to pros and cons arguments. In Twitter’s hashtags and tweets, religious issues frequently trigger a hot conversation that causes disputes among citizens and even street movements. This study is intended to reveal the religious issues that often trigger polarization among Twitter users and how they influence horizontal conflict in society as what happened during the election period in 2019. This research applied mixed methods with social media analytics to conceal religious issues in Indonesia's social media society. The data collection was done by crawling data from the Indonesian Twitter users’ tweets regarding religious issues hashtags, which is a reference for further analysis. The research findings show that the top eight religious issues widely discussed based on 23,433 Twitter users’ tweets are the hashtags (#) salafi, wahabi, intoleransi (intolerance), taliban, anti-Pancasila, politisasi agama (politicization of religion), politik identitas (identity politics), and radikalisme (radicalism). In social conversation networks, these issues are related to each other and other issues such as political figures, the three presidential candidates, the general election, and the Republic of Indonesia presidential election in 2024. Concerning these issues, Twitter users believe that the issues, positive or negative, do not influence their religious and political stance. However, to a certain extent, they believe that religious issues impact social discourses regarding horizontal conflicts. 44% opinions prove this indicated that the debate over religious matters had little influence on their opinion of these topics, and 64.5% agreed that religious concerns can cause social strife. Finally, it is hoped that further studies will elaborate on how religious issues on Twitter and other social media directly impact social harmony in everyday life.

Abstract

The growth of social media users in Indonesia has increased online interactions, but has also triggered a surge in hate speech. Hate speech threatens social cohesion and can lead to violence. This article explores how digital literacy can be used as a tool to reduce the spread of hate speech on social media. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach and in-depth interviews with digital literacy experts. The results show that good digital literacy can improve the ability of social media users to recognize and counter hate speech. The conclusion of this study is the importance of digital literacy education in the curriculum and educational programs targeting internet users. This scheme includes a multi-layered approach from upstream (prevention) to downstream (law enforcement), with the Ministry of Communication and Information playing a central role in cooperation with digital platforms, enforcing regulations, and community digital literacy to reduce the spread of hate speech in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to comprehensively examine how Sundanese idioms and oral traditions effectively transmit Islamic values derived from hadith within the context of cross-cultural da'wah Method – This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, specifically utilizing content analysis and thematic analysis techniques to examine the intersection of Sundanese cultural idioms and Islamic hadith in da'wah practices. Result – The Sundanese oral tradition in the form of proverbs is a form of local intelligence in understanding hadith as a source of Islamic teachings, which functions as a cross-cultural communicative competence to avoid misunderstandings due to differences in expectations, worldviews, and values. Cross-cultural da'wah emphasises the universality of Islam that transcends geographical and socio-cultural boundaries, leveraging universal human similarities and the dynamics of cultural change to convey Islamic messages to diverse community groups effectively. Implication – The transformation of Arabic hadith into Sundanese proverbs shows that Islamic preaching can succeed when religious messages are communicated through local cultural forms familiar to the local community, without changing the essence of the teachings. The cross-cultural approach to da'wah through local oral traditions proves that Islam has a universal nature that can adapt to various socio-cultural contexts, thereby facilitating the acceptance and practice of Islamic teachings in the daily lives of the Sundanese people. Originality/Value – This study addresses a critical gap in existing literature by providing the first comprehensive analysis of the direct relationship between Sundanese idioms and hadith within the specific context of da'wah, offering a novel holistic approach that considers deeply rooted local cultural factors in Sundanese society.

Abstract

This study analyzes how gender bias and religious conservatism are reproduced through social media in Indonesia, using the viral case study of Shuniyya Ruhama, a female religious teacher who was attacked online for expressing religious views that were considered incompatible with conservative interpretations. The objective of this study is to uncover the dynamics of the representation of female religious authority and resistance to it in the digital space. The methodology employed is Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), utilizing data from the platforms X (Twitter), Threads, and TikTok, using a purposive sampling technique. Findings indicate that women who deliver religious sermons often face delegitimization through misogynistic religious narratives that reinforce the hegemony of religious patriarchy. Symbolic representations in the form of labeling, hate speech, and the removal of women’s religious authority status reveal unequal power dynamics. On the other hand, counter-narratives emerge from progressive communities advocating for equality in religious interpretation and women’s religious authority. This study shows that social media is not neutral, but rather an ideological arena where conservative discourse is both perpetuated and challenged. The implications of this study include the need for a reformulation of gender-fair media representation and support for digital public spaces that are inclusive of women in religious discourse.
