Abstract

Abstract

UV radiation from sunlight can induce the formation of free radicals, which can disrupt cellular homeostasis or DNA by triggering inflammatory signal transduction. The occurrence of inflammation in the skin can be aggravated by the presence of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Previous studies have shown that the marine sponge Stylissa sp. contains an abundance of fatty acids and lipids compared to other species. Although Stylissa sp. has great potential for health applications, research on the bioactivity of lipid and fatty acid compounds from this sponge remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore the lipid content of Stylissa sp. as an alternative source of antibacterial agents against pathogens responsible for photoaging. The metabolite profiling of the extract was conducted using GC-MS, while the antibacterial activity was performed using the Kirby-Bauer method. Based on GC-MS profiling results, six compounds were identified in the lipid extract of Stylissa sp. namely palmitic acid, butyl glycol acetate, n-eicosylcyclohexane, isopropyl laurate, oleic acid, and 1-tetradecanol. Antibacterial evaluation of Stylissa sp. lipid extract at concentrations of 25%, 75%, and 100% showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with inhibition zone diameters of 1.83, 2.17, and 2.92 mm, respectively. The results in this study have shown that the lipid extract of Stylissa sp. contains lipid compounds with potential anti-bacterial activity towards S. aureus. Future research to isolate unsaturated fatty acid compounds from the lipid extract of Stylissa sp. to achieve higher antibacterial activity is recommended.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country rich in natural resources with 30,000 species of plants that have the potential as medicines from a total of 40,000 plant species in the world. Most Indonesians have home yards, but still few are managed productively by planting TOGA. The large area, the large number of hamlets, and the dense population cause various problems in Sengkol Village, one of which is the lack of understanding about the importance of planting and utilizing TOGA. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct counseling on the importance of planting TOGA in the yard and demonstration of the use of TOGA into traditional herbal medicine as an alternative treatment with low costs and low side effects. Counseling and demonstrations in this activity are carried out by lecture and discussion methods, as well as product demonstrations. The lecture method is carried out when delivering counseling materials, the discussion method is carried out during the question and answer session, and the product demonstration method is carried out when demonstrating the making of herbal medicine from TOGA. The location of TOGA planting was carried out on an empty land in the yard of one of the residents of Pampang Lauk Hamlet with a land size of 6x6 m2. TOGA that is planted has properties that are adapted to diseases that commonly occur in the community, namely yellow turmeric, white turmeric, ginger, ginger, galangal, kencur, katuk, virgin palm, lemongrass, betel. Making a green house was carried out for one week involving youth and villagers using bamboo and paranets. Counseling participants were dominated by men (66.6%), adolescents (57.57%), and students (42.42%). The material presentation, discussion, and demonstration sessions went smoothly and the community was very enthusiastic about participating in the activity. Based on the counseling that has been carried out, the urgency of planting TOGA in the yard and the use of TOGA as an alternative treatment is well conveyed.

Abstract

Basic health literacy is fundamental knowledge that is crucial to be known from an early age by children and the general public. Health education provided from an early age will encourage children to live healthy lives, ultimately growing into a generation that is healthy, intelligent, and cheerful. However, the lack of facilities and infrastructure in schools, especially elementary schools located in remote areas, results in a limited understanding of basic health knowledge among children. Sengkol village is a village in the Pujut district that lacks the facilities and infrastructure to support the improvement of children's knowledge regarding basic health literacy. Therefore, Universitas Mataram (UNRAM), in collaboration with Fukushima Medical University (FMU), has initiated a program related to the popularization of medical knowledge (POMk), which involves the dissemination of basic health literacy in a simple and engaging manner using interactive learning methods and appropriate teaching aids related to the topics discussed. This enables children to better understand the basic health topics presented. The dissemination activities took place over two days in elementary schools in the Sengkol area, Central Lombok, namely Eco School Nusantara as a learning venue for children and SDN 4 Sengkol as a formal school. The topics covered during the dissemination included Body Puzzle, Dangers of Tobacco, Personal Hygiene and Sanitation (PHBS), and Nutrition Balance.

Abstract

The kidney is the main organ of the excretory system that performs a very vital function in the human body. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a disease that greatly affects human quality of life, especially children. The disease can be prevented with basic knowledge about kidneys, their functions, and how to maintain kidney health. This study aims to determine the effect of providing education on knowledge of kidney function and health integrated with educational materials and a simple educational board game of kidney function on students' knowledge. The research method used the quasi-experimental technique with one group pre-test and post-test design. Data analysis used an N-gain test to determine the improvement of students' critical thinking skills and a t-test to determine the effect of educational materials and a simple educational board game of kidney function on students' knowledge. The data was collected using a pretest-posttest involving 30 teenage students. The t-test results indicate a significant difference between pretest and posttest critical thinking skills (p < 0,05). A high category N-gain score of 0,972 was achieved. This study concludes that educational materials and a simple board game of kidney function effectively enhance student's knowledge
