Abstract

This research presents about the efforts of pesantren in realizing caring and cultured students of the environment based on the independence of pesantren, with a research site at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid, Paiton, Probolinggo. As a pesantren which has considerable potential in santri in making changes and renewals, especially related to the creation of a friendly and comfortable environment, it is one of the very potential media in overcoming the current and future environmental crises. Given the many behaviors that indicate the lack of environmental awareness shown by society today. This research uses a qualitative approach with case study. The results showed; the efforts of Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo in realizing caring and cultured environmental students based on independence, namely; development of environment-based curriculum, foster theological awareness about the importance of caring for the environment, development of participatory-based environmental activities.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di lembaga kursus Bahasa Inggris, Zain Academy, yang berlokasi di Kecamatan Kotaanyar, Kabupaten Probolinggo. Program ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan memberikan penyuluhan sekaligus pelatihan perencanaan pembelajaran yang baik melalui implementasi Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP) dengan pemilihan pendekatan yang tepat berdasarkan Kurikulum 2013. Tujuan dari pelaksanaan abdimas ini adalah memberikan pemahaman dan pendampingan dalam pembuatan Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP) keterampilan menulis (writing skills) yang sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013 dan buku Step Forward Language for Everyday Life  karya Jeni Currie Santamaria dan Christy M. Newman yang digunakan Zain Academy, dalam hal ini implementasi CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) dan memberikan keterampilan kepada guru-guru tentang penyusunan rancangan pembelajaran sekaligus melakukan simulasi. Dari tujuan tersebut kemudian solusi-solusi diantaranya pendampingan secara langsung dan intensif serta mengkaji, membedah, dan berdiskusi lebih intsensif mengenai pembuatan pembuatan Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP) keterampilan menulis (writing skills) yang sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013 dan buku Step Forward Language for Everyday Life  karya Jeni Currie Santamaria dan Christy M. Newman dengan implementasi CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) untuk beberapa unit atau topic pembelajaran.

Abstract

The application of technology in English language education is increasingly widespread, one of which is through the Duolingo app. This study aims to evaluate the impact of using the Duolingo app on students' motivation in learning English as well as identify the specific factors that contribute to such motivation. The research method used was a mixed approach, combining quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data was collected through a structured questionnaire with a Likert scale to measure students' motivation and contributing factors. Qualitative data was obtained through focus group discussions (FGDs) to explore students' experiences and perceptions in depth. The results showed that the Duolingo app significantly increased students' motivation in learning English. Findings from the questionnaire indicated that 53.3% of respondents strongly agreed that Duolingo was effective in increasing their motivation, while 46.7% agreed with the statement. The focus group discussion corroborated these findings by emphasising the role of gamification features, such as points and badges, as well as self-paced learning features in making the learning process more enjoyable and improving English confidence and comprehension. The findings are consistent with previous research highlighting the effectiveness of gamification and self-paced learning features and make a novel contribution by exploring the overall impact of different app features. Limitations of this study include the limited sample size and reliance on self-report data, which may affect the generalisability of the results. Future research is recommended to use a larger and more diverse sample and more varied data collection methods, including direct observation and in-depth interviews. Future research could also explore the long-term effects of using Duolingo and the differences in its impact based on students' educational background or initial ability level. It is hoped that these recommendations will provide a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of this app in the broader context of English language education.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the position of women climbers in the student association for Environmental and adventure activity of MAPALA Marabunta of Panca Marga University of Probolinggo. This study was conducted by using the method of descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation, interview, and documentation.  The results showed that in mountain climbing activities made by women climbers there is no difference between male and female climbers. This is in a manner conforming to representation view. Women climbers already have the ability and skills to Mountain climbing. The women climber is also equivalent to male climbers in general. So there are no points or ways in which male and female climbers are dissimilar. What distinguishes only their will, whether they want to practice and learn, if they want to practice and learn and take the opportunity already given, it will happen what is on want that is equality.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) pelatihan penggunaan aplikasi Duolingo di Lembaga Kursus Zain Academy bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa serta mengidentifikasi kendala dalam penerapan aplikasi sebagai alat bantu pembelajaran. Latar belakang program ini adalah kebutuhan untuk memaksimalkan penggunaan teknologi dalam pendidikan bahasa Inggris dan meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran. Metode pengabdian meliputi penilaian kebutuhan awal, pengembangan materi pelatihan, pelaksanaan lokakarya, serta evaluasi dan umpan balik. Pelatihan mencakup sesi praktik langsung yang memungkinkan instruktur dan siswa untuk menerapkan fitur-fitur Duolingo dalam proses pembelajaran. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui survei umpan balik untuk mengukur manfaat, motivasi, dan efektivitas aplikasi. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa program ini berhasil meningkatkan pemahaman peserta tentang fitur Duolingo, motivasi belajar, dan rasa percaya diri mereka. Sebanyak 89,5% responden merasakan manfaat materi pelatihan, dan 84% mengalami peningkatan motivasi belajar. Walaupun sebagian besar peserta tidak menghadapi kendala berarti, tantangan seperti akses internet dan pemahaman kosakata baru masih ada. Oleh karena itu, untuk meningkatkan keberlanjutan dan efektivitas program, disarankan agar Zain Academy melaksanakan pelatihan lanjutan, memperbaiki infrastruktur, dan mengembangkan program pengembangan profesional berkelanjutan. Langkah-langkah ini diharapkan dapat mengatasi kendala yang ada dan memperkuat integrasi teknologi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.

This research investigates the self-directed learning (SDL) strategies employed by senior high school students to improve their English speaking skills. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, the study explores students’ personal experiences in planning, implementing, and evaluating their independent learning activities. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, focusing on how learners manage their study routines, select learning resources, and overcome speaking challenges. The findings reveal that students adopt a combination of cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies, such as shadowing native speakers, self-recording, engaging in peer conversations, and utilizing digital applications. Intrinsic motivation, discipline, and self-confidence emerge as crucial internal factors, while access to resources, supportive environments, and technology serve as external enablers. The study concludes that SDL enhances students’ fluency, accuracy, and confidence in speaking English, particularly when strategies are aligned with learners’ preferences and supported by conducive learning conditions.

Abstract

English speaking ability is an important skill in foreign language learning, yet many students still show low levels of confidence in speaking, especially in course institutions such as Zain Academy. One of the factors thought to influence students' confidence is their perception of teachers' professional identity, which includes pedagogical competence, interpersonal relationships and affective support. This study aims to find out the relationship between students' perceptions of teachers' professional identity and their level of confidence in speaking English. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Data were collected through a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 16 Zain Academy students who had attended at least one semester of study. Data were analysed through Pearson correlation test and simple linear regression. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between students' perceptions of teachers' professional identity and their confidence in speaking English, with a correlation value of r = 0.548 and a significance of p = 0.028. The regression test results showed that students' perceptions of teachers' professional identity contributed 30% to the variation in students' self-confidence (R Square = 0.300). This finding supports the theory that perceptions of teacher professionalism play a role in building students' motivation and self-confidence in language learning contexts. The conclusion of this study is that positive perceptions of teachers' professional identity can increase students' confidence in speaking English. Therefore, it is recommended that non-formal education institutions provide training for teachers to develop comprehensive professional qualities, and involve affective and interpersonal aspects to create a learning environment that supports students' courage in communicating.

Abstract

Social care is the attitude and behavior of a person or group of people to pay attention, respect, and assist those in need. It involves empathy, concern, and responsibility for the well-being of others. It is essential to form these values from an early age, especially in the younger generation, so that they can provide benefits to society in the future. This research aims to identify the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in increasing students' social awareness at MA Walisongo Gending, especially in fostering a caring attitude towards the surrounding environment and readiness to help other people in need, especially in the context of Islamic education. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, and data is collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Research confirms that the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers is vital in forming students' social awareness. PAI teachers act as educators who teach social values in Islam and as learning resources that provide relevant and in-depth material. They are also role models in social behavior, providing tangible examples of doing good and caring for others. Apart from that, PAI teachers act as motivators who actively encourage students to participate in social activities. They encourage and support students to care about the surrounding environment and do good to others. As mentors and evaluators, PAI teachers provide direction and feedback on students' social activities, guiding them in planning, implementing, and evaluating their social activities.
