Abstract

Organic waste is a major component produced at Pasar Induk Kota Meulaboh, which, if not properly managed, can lead to various environmental problems such as soil, water, and air pollution. One innovative solution for managing organic waste is by utilizing Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, also known as maggots. Maggots have great potential in breaking down organic waste into high-value poultry feed. This community service program aims to enhance the understanding and skills of the community, students, and poultry farmers in processing organic waste into maggots through training that covers cultivation techniques, maintenance, and the economic and environmental benefits of maggots. The results of this activity show that utilizing maggots can reduce organic waste volume by up to 60%, while providing a cheaper and more sustainable alternative for poultry feed. Moreover, maggot utilization aligns with the zero waste concept and has the potential to improve local community welfare. However, the adoption of this technology requires continuous support through outreach, facility provision, and collaboration between academics, the government, and the farming community. Organic waste management based on maggots is expected to serve as an effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable solution for Pasar Induk Kota Meulaboh.

Abstract

Increasing the number of young entrepreneurs in the poultry sector is a mandate for universities, given the high market demand for Hybrid Chicken products—a type of chicken that has the potential to produce more and larger eggs. To support the availability of commercial seeds, a 23-day Community Service Programme (PKM) has been implemented, focusing on improving the management capabilities of local hybrid chicken breeding businesses. This programme targeted 12 entrepreneurial cadres (farmer groups and students) through key technical guidance and demonstrations, including artificial insemination and DOC selection. The results showed that the programme was highly successful in transferring knowledge and skills: 90% of participants mastered the material and 85% mastered the technical demonstrations. This success was reinforced by a 100% satisfaction rate among participants, who reported significant benefits. As a follow-up, participants recommended extending the training duration to three months and expanding the scope to other poultry species.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication network among agricultural extension workers involved in the implementation of Salibu rice cultivation technology in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach supported by sociometric and sociogram analysis, with data collected through surveys, observations, and interviews. The results show that the communication network follows a Radial Personal Network pattern, with actors functioning as opinion leaders, bridges, liaison officers, and isolates, while educational level, extension experience, and the use of information media influence actors’ positions within the network. Higher participation in the communication network also enhances the effectiveness of information dissemination and supports the adoption of Salibu technology. These findings suggest that strengthening communication networks and optimizing the roles of key actors are essential to improve extension effectiveness and support the sustainable diffusion of Salibu rice cultivation innovation.
