Abstract

Louis Edrich is a contemporary Native American writer who writes The Round House. The novel portrays the complexities of individual and cultural identity, focuses on the exigencies of marginalization and cultural survival, which happened to Native Americans, as well as concerns about spirituality and the hybrid form of religion, known as spiritual hybridity. Spiritual hybridity appears to be common practices for Native Americans after the arrival of European and the massive spreading of Christianity. This study is conducted to probe the representation of the spiritual hybridity of Native Americans. The novel is examined using Bhabha’s theory on Hybridity. The dialogue and narration in the form of words, phrases, and sentences in the novel are treated as a data source representing the spiritual hybridity of Native Americans. The analysis results in the representation of the spiritual hybridity of Native Americans,which can be considered as their defense against Christian hegemony. Besides, the representation of spiritual hybridity, as a form of third space, occurs due to a mixture of religious beliefs committed by Native Americans after experiencing religious oppression or discrimination. Spiritual hybridity can be concluded as a new pattern of the struggle and resistance of Native Americans to fight for their tradition. Nowadays, spiritual hybridity for Native American remains a form of resistance towards Christian hegemony.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajaran matematika berbasis etnomatematika terhadap hasil belajar matematika siswa MI Miftahul Mubtadiin Pamekasan. Pendekatan etnomatematika dipilih untuk menghubungkan konsep matematika dengan budaya lokal Madura, sehingga siswa dapat memahami materi secara lebih kontekstual dan relevan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dengan desain quasi-experimental. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari dua kelompok: kelompok eksperimen yang mendapatkan pembelajaran berbasis etnomatematika dan kelompok kontrol yang mendapatkan pembelajaran konvensional. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes hasil belajar yang diberikan sesudah perlakuan. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan adanya perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan antara kelompok eksperimen dan control dengan nilai signifikansi (p < 0,05). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis etnomatematika memiliki pengaruh positif terhadap hasil belajar matematika siswa MI Miftahul Mubtadiin, serta meningkatkan pemahaman dan motivasi belajar mereka.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to measure the impact of fun activities in English language learning on improving the speaking skills of children at Muhammadiyah Orphanage in Sumenep. The implemented activities included role-plays, language games, storytelling, and singing English songs. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with a naturalistic approach, supported by speaking assessments and learning experience questionnaires as primary instruments. The results showed a significant improvement across four speaking skill aspects: fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary use, and message delivery. The average speaking score increased from 3.05 to 4.33, indicating the effectiveness of the approach in a non-formal educational setting. In addition, the questionnaire results revealed that children felt more confident, motivated, and enjoyed the English learning process. These findings support the Communicative Language Teaching approach and Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis, both of which emphasize the importance of meaningful, low-pressure learning environments. Overall, this study recommends implementing fun-based learning methods as an effective strategy to enhance children’s speaking abilities, particularly in educationally limited settings such as orphanages.ABSTRAKKegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur dampak kegiatan menyenangkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terhadap peningkatan kemampuan berbicara anak-anak di Panti Asuhan Muhammadiyah Sumenep. Kegiatan yang diterapkan meliputi role-play, permainan bahasa, storytelling, dan menyanyi lagu berbahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan naturalistik, serta melibatkan speaking assessment dan angket pengalaman belajar sebagai instrumen utama. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan pada empat aspek kemampuan berbicara: kelancaran, pengucapan, kosakata, dan penyampaian pesan. Rata-rata skor speaking meningkat dari 3.05 menjadi 4.33, menunjukkan efektivitas pendekatan ini dalam konteks nonformal. Selain itu, hasil angket menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak merasa lebih percaya diri, termotivasi, dan menikmati proses belajar bahasa Inggris. Temuan ini mendukung teori Communicative Language Teaching dan Affective Filter Hypothesis, yang menekankan pentingnya pembelajaran yang bermakna dan bebas tekanan. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan pengabdian ini merekomendasikan penerapan metode pembelajaran berbasis kegiatan menyenangkan sebagai pendekatan yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris anak-anak, terutama di lingkungan yang memiliki keterbatasan akses pendidikan formal.

Abstract

The integration of songs into English Language Teaching (ELT) has gained increasing attention as an engaging and effective instructional approach. This literature review explores the role of English songs as instructional media in enhancing students’ language skills across various educational levels. Drawing on studies published between 2011 and 2021 from databases such as Google Scholar and Publish or Perish, the review focuses on how songs contribute to the development of listening, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation, and learner motivation. The analysis is organized according to three educational contexts: junior high school, senior high school, and higher education. Findings suggest that the use of English songs can foster a positive learning atmosphere, reduce learners’ anxiety, and improve engagement and skill acquisition. The review highlights the pedagogical value of songs in ELT and provides practical insights for educators seeking to implement song-based strategies in their classrooms

Abstract

This study investigates beginner-level EFL students’ perceptions and expectations of their teachers’ teaching performance at the Mister Nob English course. While previous research has often emphasized subject knowledge and relied on quantitative approaches in formal settings, this study adopts a qualitative method to provide deeper insight into teacher performance in an informal learning environment. Using the Teaching Competencies Scale (TCS) by Catano and Harvey (2010), the study explored nine key competencies: availability, communication, conscientiousness, creativity, feedback, individual consideration, professionalism, problem-solving, and social awareness. Data were collected from ten students through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed that students responded positively to their teachers’ performance, particularly valuing social awareness and availability. However, uncertainty remained regarding feedback and problem-solving competencies. Additionally, students expressed expectations for greater creativity, punctuality, and lesson preparation. The study highlights the importance of emotional engagement, accessibility, and creativity in promoting effective teaching and learning in EFL contexts. Recommendations for future research include expanding participant diversity, incorporating teachers’ perspectives, and broadening the scope of performance indicators.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan sistem deteksi dini angin puting beliung berbasis fuzzy logic dengan sensor DHT22 dan anemometer yang dilengkapi SMS Gateway sebagai media peringatan dini. Sistem ini sebelumnya dikembangkan dalam penelitian dengan hasil akurasi yang baik, kemudian diimplementasikan pada masyarakat sebagai bagian dari peningkatan kesiapsiagaan bencana. Metode kegiatan meliputi sosialisasi, instalasi perangkat, pelatihan masyarakat, serta evaluasi respon warga terhadap pesan peringatan dini yang diterima melalui SMS dengan kategori “Waspada”, dan “Siaga”. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat mampu memahami pesan peringatan dan mengambil langkah mitigasi sederhana sesuai tingkat bahaya. Implementasi teknologi ini berhasil meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat akan pentingnya kesiapsiagaan menghadapi bencana puting beliung.
