Abstract

This study aims to investigate the implementation of the Project-Based Learning model to improve English communication skills among seventh-grade students at SMP Antonius Nabire. This research employed the Pre-Experimental Design method, with a sample of 29 eighth-grade students. Data were collected using an oral test (speaking test). The results of the study showed that the application of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model significantly improved students' communication skills in the English subject. Before the implementation of PjBL, the majority of students fell into the failing category with an average score of 57.58%. However, after the implementation of PjBL, there was a significant improvement, with the average student score reaching 94.48%, and the majority of students achieving the "very good" qualification. These results align with various studies that assert PjBL's effectiveness in enhancing communication skills, as students actively engage in discussions, collaboration, and project presentations. In addition to improving academic abilities, PjBL also hones essential social skills needed for 21st-century learning. The N-Gain results showed that all students achieved a high qualification in communication skills, confirming that PjBL is an effective method for significantly increasing student engagement and communication skills.

Abstract

Kesenjangan pemahaman dan praktik keadilan sosial dalam pembelajaran di Sekolah Dasar, khususnya di daerah tertinggal seperti Kabupaten Nabire, menjadi tantangan serius dalam menciptakan lingkungan pendidikan yang inklusif dan setara. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan guru-guru Sekolah Dasar agar berperan aktif sebagai agen keadilan sosial melalui pelatihan, pendampingan, dan refleksi pedagogis. Sasaran kegiatan ini adalah guru-guru di dua sekolah dasar di Nabire, dengan materi mencakup pemahaman prinsip keadilan sosial, integrasi dalam kurikulum, serta praktik pembelajaran yang responsif terhadap keragaman siswa. Kegiatan dilakukan secara partisipatif, dengan metode ceramah interaktif, studi kasus, dan workshop berbasis konteks lokal. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner untuk mengukur perubahan pemahaman dan praktik guru. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kesadaran dan kemampuan guru dalam menerapkan keadilan sosial dalam proses belajar mengajar. Kegiatan ini tidak hanya menjawab kebutuhan lokal, tetapi juga memberikan model yang dapat direplikasi di wilayah lain dengan karakteristik serupa. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan berbasis konteks lokal mampu memperkuat peran guru sebagai agen transformasi sosial. Keberlanjutan program dan dukungan lintas sektor menjadi kunci penting dalam memperluas dampak kegiatan ini.

Abstract

The low writing proficiency among junior high school students, particularly in remote areas of Indonesia, remains a pressing concern in language education. This research addresses the problem by implementing a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model supported by audiovisual media to improve students' narrative writing skills. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the integrated instructional model on students' writing performance, focusing on idea development, vocabulary usage, and text organization. Using a quantitative, pre-experimental design with a One-Group Pretest-Posttest framework, data were collected from 30 Grade VII students at SMP Antonius Nabire. Writing assessments were conducted before and after the treatment, with results analyzed using paired sample t-tests and normalized gain (N-Gain) scores. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ writing abilities after the intervention, with posttest scores exceeding the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) and N-Gain scores indicating high learning gains. These outcomes suggest that combining PjBL with audiovisual media enhances student engagement, creativity, and comprehension in writing tasks. The study contributes to educational research by providing a replicable model for under-resourced contexts, demonstrating that multimodal and student-centered instruction can bridge performance gaps and promote equitable learning. Future research is recommended to examine long-term impacts and scalability of the model across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis strategi guru dalam menerapkan manajemen kelas interaktif, respons dan keterlibatan siswa, serta dampaknya terhadap pemahaman materi di SD Negeri 2 Nabire. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis studi kasus. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan teknik yaitu wawancara dan observasi, yang kemudian dilakukan analisis tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan Kesimpulan. Untuk menjamin keabsahan data dalam penelitian menggunakan kriteria yaitu credibility, transferability, dependability, dan confirmability. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menerapkan strategi pembelajaran berbasis diskusi, presentasi, dan pengaturan tempat duduk fleksibel yang mendorong keterlibatan aktif siswa. Respons siswa ditandai dengan meningkatnya partisipasi, keberanian berpendapat, dan motivasi belajar baik di kelas maupun di rumah. Dampak dari penerapan manajemen kelas interaktif terlihat pada peningkatan pemahaman konsep, keterampilan berpikir kritis, serta rasa percaya diri siswa dalam menyampaikan pendapat. Berdasarhan hasil penelitian menegaskan bahwa manajemen kelas interaktif mampu menciptakan suasana belajar yang kondusif sekaligus meningkatkan kualitas hasil belajar siswa.

Abstract

English speaking skills are an important competency that students need to have, especially in facing the challenges of globalization. However, at SMP St. Antonius Nabire, the English speaking skills of grade VII students are still low due to the lack of opportunities to practice and exposure to the language. This community service program aims to improve students' English speaking skills through the English Conversation Club. The methods used are structured discussions, conversation simulations, and light debates in English, which are carried out in weekly sessions for several months. Active student participation in a supportive and pressure-free environment is the main focus of this activity. The results showed a significant increase in students' speaking skills, including fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary. More than 70% of students experienced an increase in their English speaking skills and increased self-confidence. However, there were several weaknesses, such as limited implementation time and variations in student abilities that required further adjustments. The conclusion of this activity is that the English Conversation Club is effective in improving the English speaking skills of grade VII students at SMP St. Antonius Nabire. In the future, technology integration and expansion of the program to other schools can be the next steps to increase the positive impact of this program.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa SMP melalui integrasi musik dan lagu dalam proses pembelajaran. Proyek ini dilakukan di SMP Antonius Nabire dan melibatkan berbagai kegiatan seperti pelatihan guru, implementasi pelajaran berbasis musik, kegiatan interaktif, serta observasi dan evaluasi secara berkala. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman kosakata siswa di kelompok eksperimen dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Siswa di kelompok eksperimen juga melaporkan motivasi yang lebih tinggi dan minat dalam belajar bahasa Inggris ketika musik dan lagu digunakan. Hasil proyek ini sejalan dengan teori dan penelitian yang ada tentang efektivitas musik dalam pembelajaran bahasa, menyoroti perannya dalam meningkatkan retensi kosakata dan motivasi. Kegiatan ini juga mengarah pada pembentukan struktur sosial baru di sekolah, termasuk klub bahasa dan musik, serta pengembangan keterampilan sosial dan kepemimpinan siswa. Rekomendasi untuk implementasi di masa depan meliputi integrasi musik dalam kurikulum, pelatihan guru yang berkelanjutan, pengembangan materi ajar berbasis musik, dan pembentukan komunitas pembelajaran. Penelitian lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk mengeksplorasi dampak jangka panjang musik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan mengidentifikasi praktik terbaik untuk implementasi.

Abstract

Classroom discipline problems in lower secondary education often persist when classroom management relies primarily on rules and sanctions rather than value internalization. This study aimed to describe and analyze how character-based classroom management is implemented and how it contributes to improving positive student behavior among Grade VII students at St. Antonius Nabire Middle School (Papua, Indonesia). Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from teachers and Grade VII students through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative model (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing). The findings show that character values—especially discipline, responsibility, and mutual respect—were embedded in classroom rules, learning routines, and daily teacher–student interactions. Consistent teacher role modeling, structured habituation, and positive reinforcement strengthened classroom climate and supported students’ internalization of expected behaviors. Observable changes included improved punctuality and learning discipline, higher responsibility in completing tasks, more respectful peer and teacher interactions, and fewer disruptive behaviors during lessons. Key challenges involved variation in students’ character backgrounds and external environmental influences beyond school. The study concludes that character-based classroom management is a relevant and effective approach for fostering positive behavior in junior high school settings, particularly in under-researched contexts such as Papua. Practically, the findings inform teacher strategies and school policies to standardize value-based class agreements and strengthen school–family collaboration. Future research should employ longitudinal and mixed-methods designs across multiple schools and include family/community perspectives to clarify sustainability and mechanisms of change.
