Abstract

Mobile augmented reality (AR) has evolved from an experimental visualization tool into a mature pedagogical medium that redefines spatial learning in geography education. By embedding digital content into authentic locations, AR fosters experiential and inquiry-driven learning aligned with geography’s spatial and environmental paradigms. Building on evidence from 2015 to 2025, this review synthesizes 138 studies to examine how AR supports cognitive, affective, and behavioral learning dimensions. The analysis reveals that AR enhances spatial reasoning, visualization of abstract processes, and place-based engagement when integrated within robust instructional design frameworks. However, persistent gaps remain in long-term learning assessment, scalability, and teacher competence for authoring AR experiences. Cognitive-load and motivation studies suggest that AR’s benefits are maximized when interactivity and spatial anchoring are balanced with scaffolding. The review proposes a multidimensional model linking technological affordances, pedagogical strategies, and geographic thinking to promote education for sustainability and digital spatial citizenship. Implications for researchers, educators, and developers are discussed to guide future cross-disciplinary innovations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Snowball Throwing learning model on the cognitive learning outcomes of Geography students of class X IPS on the Basic Knowledge of Geography material at SMA Negeri 1 Randangan. The study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design of the pretest-posttest control group type. The experimental class followed the Snowball Throwing learning model, while the control class used lectures and questions and answers. The results showed that the improvement in learning outcomes in the experimental class was better than the control class. The N-Gain value of the experimental class was in the high category, while the control class was in the medium category. This difference indicates that learning that provides space for students to formulate questions, discuss, and answer friends' questions is able to strengthen conceptual understanding better than one-way learning. These findings confirm that Snowball Throwing not only improves learning outcomes, but also encourages activeness, academic communication, and student involvement in the geography learning process. Thus, this model can be considered as an alternative learning method for Geography material that requires conceptual understanding, interrelationships between phenomena, and more active reasoning.

Abstract

Fifteen relevant articles/paragraphs were identified and evaluated across three analytical dimensions: the existence of geological hazards within spatial patterns, the depth of zoning control instruments, and potential spatial conflicts between settlement allocations and hazard-prone zones. The strongest control instruments are the seismic KRB provisions incorporating PGA and MMI parameters (Article 96(10)) and the mandatory tsunami risk assessment requirement (Article 96(16)). Five structural weaknesses were identified: absence of coordinate-based non-buildable zones, lack of Gorontalo Fault data integration, absence of liquefaction hazard provisions, no climate change projections, and lack of an operational RDTR. Significant spatial conflicts were identified in coastal urban settlements overlapping with high-level tsunami and flash flood hazard zones. Detailed geological mapping at 1:25,000 scale, geohazard-based RDTR, and mandatory site-specific hazard assessment procedures are required prior to building permit issuance in high KRB zones.

Abstract

Land cover change in artificial lake buffer zones is a common phenomenon driven by increasing human activities, such as settlement expansion, agricultural development, and infrastructure construction. These changes have the potential to reduce the ecological function of lake areas as environmental buffer zones and to intensify hydrological problems, including sedimentation and declining water quality. This study aims to utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as an instructional medium for Grade X senior high school geography through a case study of land cover change mapping in the Danau Perintis area, Bone Bolango Regency. The research employed a GIS-based spatial analysis approach using remote sensing image interpretation and overlay techniques on land cover maps from two different time periods. The results indicate significant land cover changes, particularly the conversion of natural vegetation into built-up and agricultural land. The use of GIS-based maps as supplementary learning materials has been shown to improve students’ understanding of environmental dynamics, the relationship between human activities and spatial changes, and spatial thinking skills. Therefore, GIS can be utilized as a contextual and applicable learning medium in geography education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze land cover dynamics in Monano District, North Gorontalo Regency, using Esri Sentinel-2 Land Cover data for the 2022–2025 period. The data used consisted of ready-to-use land cover products derived from Sentinel-2 imagery. The research methods included data collection, clipping based on the administrative boundaries of the study area, identification of land cover classes, calculation of the area and percentage of each class, and analysis of proportional changes between years. The land cover classes analyzed consisted of water bodies, trees, bare ground, and grass. The results showed that the tree class was the dominant land cover during most of the observation period. In 2025, the tree class covered 84.65 ha or 59.18% of the study area, while the grass class covered 12.28 ha or 8.58%. The largest proportional changes occurred in the grass class, which decreased from 41.18% to 8.58%, and the tree class, which increased from 39.37% to 59.18%. These findings indicate that Esri Sentinel-2 Land Cover data can be utilized as a preliminary source of information for monitoring multitemporal land cover dynamics.
