Abstract

Tin mining leaves disturbed land with sandy texture, damages natural drainage and habitats, and very low water holding capacity. The enrichment of species selection criteria for revegetating tin tailing with anatomical and physiological characters is needed to facilitate decision maker to select local species suitable for revegetation and to meet the economical need of the local people in post tin mining era. Besides exotic species, a handful of local tree species was planted recently. The need of more local species is especially needed to support biodiversity in mined land. Study of some leaf anatomical and root physiological characters of twelve months seedlings of leban(Vitex pinnata L-Verbenaceae) and ubak (Syzygium grande (Wight) Walp.Myrtaceae) planted in unmined land and tin-mined land in Bangka Island was conducted using wholemount and paraffi n methods. The fi ndings showedthat anatomical and physiological parameters of V. pinnata are more signifi cant than those of S. grande. Therefore, V. pinnata is more adaptive grown on tin tailing than S. grande.

Abstract

Inonu I, Kusmiadi R, Yuliana A, Nurtjahya E. 2020. The amelioration of post tin mining sand tailing medium with chicken manure for pepper cultivation. Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal: Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(1): 31-40. Pepper cultivation in tin mining sand tailings requires the amelioration of organic matter to improve soil characteristics. The paper investigates the effect of chicken manure dosage on the growth of three pepper cultivars in sand tailing medium. This study was conducted on April-August 2016 at Experiment Station of Universitas Bangka Belitung, Balunijuk Village, Bangka Island. This study was arranged in a completely randomized design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the dosage of chicken manure (5 kg; 6 kg; 7 kg/plant). The second factor was pepper cultivars (Lampung Daun Lebar; Lampung Daun Kecil; Merapin). The. result of the analysis of variance showed that the treatment of chicken manure dosage significantly affected only on total leaf area. The treatment of pepper cultivars significantly affected the total of chlorophyll, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight. There was no interaction between chicken manure dosage and pepper cultivar. Pepper cv. Lampung Daun Lebar tends to grow better than the other cultivars in the sand tailing medium.

Waktu tanam berbagai tanaman pertanian rata-rata 101 hari, dengan frekuensi tanam 2 kali setahun dan hold-up time 1-4 hari.

Abstract

Pandanus tectorius Parkinson ex Du Roi forma integrifolius S. Agustika, S. Santiago and A.P. Keim is a new forma described from Kelapan Island in the Bangka and Belitung Province, Indonesia. This new forma is identified through the distinctive morphological character of spineless leaf margin. These facts are important to be explained related to the unique morphological phenomenon recently discovered in a small population of P. tectorius found in one of the small islands around Bangka Island. The result showed that the phenomenon of spineless leaves in P. tectorius found in Kelapan Island is related with the absence of predator, especially frugivore that consume the fruit of the species. In other words, the complete absence of bats in Kelapan Island apparently triggers the individuals of P. tectorius in the island to stop developing the spines in the leaf margin in order to protect the fruits from predators. The people of Kelapan Island harvest the leaves of P. tectorius for making mats.

Abstract

Unequal understanding among tin mining stake holders on trade regulation often triggered social conflict and therefore it was suggested to build political will especially among national, provincial, and regencial/municipal government levels. One important effort to bring out political will is presenting an independent and scientific study on comparision between socio-economic and environmental impact of tin mining. Purposive sampling was conducted to inconventional miners at reserved forest at Lubuk Kelik hamlet, pepper farmers at Silip village, and rubber farmers at Bencah village. Tin mining changed soil properties and microclimate, reduced vegetation composition and structure, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, phosphate solubilizing microorganism, ants, and Collembola population. Land conversion increased and contributed up to 95% income. The welfare improvement, however, was apparent as the recovery cost was neglected by inconventional tin miners, and only pepper land conversion showed benefit. Inconventional tin mining regulation needs improvement in order to increase land use efficiency and recovery cost. Understanding on ecological balance of more people and for more sustainable social welfare should be improved as well.
