Abstract

The sugar palm is one of the most important commodities in the Rejang Lebong Regency. Sugar palms have not been widely processed into value-added products because the community solely produces brown sugar. The goal of this study is to identify potential challenges and propose product diversification strategies that will boost the value added and sustainability of sugar palm firms in the Rejang Lebong Regency. This study was carried out in the Rejang Lebong Regency during August to October 2023. Data were gathered through observations, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. A fishbone diagram was used to identify potential and map product diversification challenges, while palm product diversification plans were developed using a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) matrix. The research results indicated that the diversification of sugar palm products is hindered by limited human resources in using technological innovations, restricted use of agricultural machinery, insufficient business partnerships, and local government programs that are not yet integrated into the development of product diversification. The strategy for sugar palm product diversification can be implemented by developing market alliances and improving processing technologies for MSMEs, with government program assistance and access to funding. This technique is expected to improve the quality and pricing of sugar palm products at the farmer level. Keywords: added value, aren palm, Arenga pinnata Merr, diversification strategy

Abstract

Technological developments have facilitated the development of digital rice fertilization recommendations, one of which is the Rice Consultation Service (LKP). This article aimed to obtain an overview of existing rice fertilization technology, fertilizer recommendations based on LKP, farmer responses to fertilizer recommendations, and aspects of LKP services. The study was conducted in Seluma Selatan District, Seluma Regency in August–October 2023 involving 32 sample farmers who were representatives of 22 farmer groups across 12 villages in South Seluma District. The data used in this study were primary data collected through interviews and secondary data were obtained from related institutions and literature studies. The data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using Binomial Logistic Regression. The results showed that applying LKP recommendations has the potential to reduce fertilizer use by 25.43 kg N/ha, 5.73 kg P2 O5 /ha, and 6.87 kg K2 O/ha. Farmers expressed interest in using the LKP service, rating it as accessible, providing necessary recommendations, and easy to understand. However, they found it challenging to operate independently. Age, land area, formal education and farming experience did not affect farmers’ responses to aspects of LKP services. Assistance from agricultural officers or more techsavvy farmers could serve as a solution for elderly farmers who want to utilize LKP services.

Abstract

Lebong Regency is one of the areas in Bengkulu with very low beef cattle population covering only 0.189% of the total 161,000 heads. Although ongoing government and stakeholder initiatives have aimed to boost smallholder populations, the outcomes remain suboptimal. This study aimed to evaluate the potential and formulate strategies to increase the beef cattle population in Lebong Regency. It used a descriptive approach through surveys and interviews involving 40 participants, including 32 smallholder farmers and 8 experts from institutions supporting livestock development in the region. Secondary data from Statistics Indonesia supported the assessment of potential and challenges. Data were analyzed using a SWOT matrix, revealing the potential carrying capacity of 10,319 cattle heads, indicating an opportunity for livestock growth in Lebong Regency. The SWOT analysis positioned the strategy in quadrant III (0.33; -0.19), suggesting a turnaround approach. The recommended development strategy emphasizes enhancing knowledge of integrated technology through collaboration between coffee processing industry owners and rice/corn farmers producing agricultural waste. Additionally, utilizing government programs to increase knowledge, scaling up beef cattle farming, and strengthening institutional cohesion are key strategic actions.
