Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication style within the spiritual community of Sel Santunnn by employing Dell Hymes' ethnography of communication approach through the SPEAKING model. Sel Santunnn, as part of the Nafiri Discipleship Church, exhibits unique interaction dynamics through a combination of verbal and nonverbal communication. This qualitative research involved seven community members as subjects, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation.The findings indicate that this community adopts a communication style characterized by cooperation, empathy, and dynamic expression. An informal atmosphere and interaction norms that encourage openness are key elements in strengthening interpersonal bonds and achieving collective goals, such as spiritual growth and group solidarity. The cooperative, animated, and friendly communication style practiced by this community contributes to the group's sustainability and harmony. These findings emphasize the importance of communication style in building an inclusive and supportive community.

Abstract

Jessica Kumala Wongso suddenly became a “celebrity” because of the murder case she was accused of in 2016. In 2023, after more than 5 years since the case was decided by the court, the Netflix reconstruct this case in a documentary film “Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso”. This research wants to see the media construction by using Robert Entman's framing analysis model, which have some categorizations: Issue Selection and Highlighting of Certain Aspects of the Issue, Define Problems, Diagnose Causes, Make Moral Judgment and Treatment Recommendations. The results show that the media constructs messages by taking opinions and statements from various sources; before, during, and after the trial process ends. This documentary does not side with or against Mirna or Jessica, but rather highlights how the criminal justice system in Indonesia actually works. This film highlights what the criminal justice system, really is in Indonesia. The victim here is not only Mirna (if there is a case), but also Jessica as a victim of injustice in the criminal justice system in Indonesia, and the Indonesian people because the public in general has the right to know how the situation actually happened. When connected to the Sustainable Development Goals, it can be seen that one of element at number 16, Justice, is still a concern, especially in Indonesia

Abstract

Roleplay is a game played on social media where individuals assume the persona of an artist and manage corresponding social media accounts. This activity involves building a social media identity, with many roleplayers attempting to do so optimally, even resorting to buying usernames at relatively high prices for survival. This research adopts a phenomenological approach, employing observational data collection techniques, and participant interviews, and explores the process of buying and selling usernames on Twitter.The results of this study reveal two primary methods for username transactions: manual searching through the platform's search bar using specific keywords and utilizing Autobase, a tool designed explicitly for buying and selling purposes. Beyond detailing the procedural aspects of username transactions, the research delves into the motives driving individuals to engage in roleplay. One enduring method in roleplaying is the acquisition of usernames, motivated by identity consistency and personal enjoyment. However, the significance of being a roleplayer extends beyond username acquisition. This study emphasizes that the existence of roleplayers is not solely measured by the quality of their usernames. Participants acknowledge that cultivating a positive character and image is equally crucial for their continued presence in the roleplay community.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di SMK Markus Tangerang dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi digital siswa, khususnya dalam mengenali dan menangani hoaks di media sosial. Hoaks merupakan tantangan serius di era digital karena penyebarannya yang cepat dan luas, terutama di kalangan remaja yang aktif menggunakan media sosial. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan edukasi yang membekali generasi muda dengan kemampuan berpikir kritis dan keterampilan verifikasi informasi agar tidak mudah terpengaruh oleh informasi yang tidak valid.Program pengabdian ini terdiri atas dua tahapan utama. Tahap pertama adalah perencanaan, yang mencakup identifikasi kebutuhan peserta, penyusunan materi pelatihan yang relevan dan mudah dipahami, serta koordinasi dengan pihak sekolah dan narasumber ahli. Tahap kedua adalah pelaksanaan kegiatan, yang dilakukan melalui metode ceramah interaktif dan diskusi kelompok, agar peserta lebih aktif dalam memahami materi dan berbagi pengalaman.Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan kesadaran peserta terhadap keberadaan hoaks dan pentingnya literasi digital. Peserta menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan dalam membedakan informasi benar dan palsu, meskipun masih ditemukan rendahnya penggunaan situs pengecekan fakta secara aktif. Hal ini menjadi catatan untuk perlunya pelatihan lanjutan yang lebih menekankan pada aspek teknis verifikasi informasi digital.Secara keseluruhan, program ini memberikan dampak positif dalam membentuk sikap kritis siswa terhadap informasi yang diterima di media sosial serta mendorong terciptanya budaya digital yang sehat di lingkungan sekolah.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami representasi identitas virtual mahasiswa urban university di Universitas Pembangunan Jaya melalui platform media sosial Instagram. Di era digital yang terus berkembang, media sosial telah menjadi ruang interaksi utama bagi kaum muda perkotaan, yang memungkinkan mereka membangun dan mengelola identitas virtual mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan metode campuran, menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif dan netnografi, serta pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner online dan observasi mendalam. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan dua jenis akun Instagram: akun utama untuk menampilkan identitas formal dan prestasi akademik dan akun kedua untuk interaksi yang lebih pribadi. Mahasiswa sangat menyadari pentingnya identitas digital dalam menunjang peluang karirnya; Oleh karena itu, mereka cenderung membatasi akses ke akun utama mereka dengan pengaturan privasi yang ketat. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa representasi identitas virtual di Instagram dipengaruhi oleh beberapa lapisan identitas: lapisan personal, lapisan pemberlakuan, lapisan relasional, dan lapisan komunal. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa identitas virtual siswa di Instagram merupakan konstruksi sosial dinamis yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor teknologi dan sosial serta berperan penting dalam komunikasi dan interaksi mereka di dunia digital.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of postmodernism on media narratives in climate issues, especially within the scope of communication in today's urban environments. Through a qualitative approach, this study deconstructs various media narratives on climate issues to understand their influence on the views and communicative actions of urban society. The analysis samples from various media platforms, including online news, social media, and digital publications, focusing on the years 2022-2023 to ensure data currency. The theoretical framework in this study integrates postmodernism concepts with communication theories, providing insights into the formation and reception of climate narratives by the audience. The findings indicate a shift in the way media narrates climate issues, moving from traditional narratives towards more fragmented and diverse ones, in line with postmodernism characteristics. This understanding is crucial for developing effective climate communication strategies that encourage active participation and concrete actions from city dwellers. Thereby, this study significantly contributes to climate communication research, highlighting the influence of media narratives on society's views and actions in facing climate issues within a complex and heterogeneous socio-cultural context.

Abstract

This study investigates the usage of the term “gemoy” in the political context, particularly in relation to Prabowo Subianto, and how this term emerged and evolved in conversations on social media platform X, from post-2019 Election to the lead-up to the 2024 Election. Qualitative content analysis method is employed to comprehend the public’s response to the usage of the term “gemoy” as part of Prabowo’s political rebranding, as well as the criticisms that surfaced in the context of society’s collective memory regarding Prabowo’s controversial track record, especially concerning past human rights violations. Findings indicate that while there is a positive response to these rebranding efforts, particularly from Generation Z, criticisms regarding the use of “gemoy” as an attempt to divert attention from more fundamental substantive issues, and resistance to Prabowo’s political rebranding, remain significant, particularly from X users. However, it’s noteworthy that X users do not dominate the population in Indonesia, and the popularity of platform X is influenced by various factors, including its ability to meet its users’ preferences in terms of fast and concise communication. Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji transformasi realitas digital melalui penggunaan influencer meta human, dengan fokus pada @Lav_Caca yang diciptakan oleh Genexyz. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami bagaimana influencer meta human berinteraksi dengan pengikutnya dan mempengaruhi konstruksi realitas sosial melalui media sosial. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah kualitatif, melalui pendekatan analisis media siber yang melibatkan wawancara dan pengamatan pada konten media sosial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa @Lav_Caca, sebagai simulacra, tidak hanya bertindak sebagai alat pemasaran tetapi juga sebagai entitas yang membentuk dan mempengaruhi persepsi publik mengenai realitas. Fenomena ini menantang batasan antara realitas dan simulasi, mendorong pemikiran baru tentang autentisitas dan realitas dalam era digital. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan baru dalam studi media dan komunikasi terkait dengan pengaruh teknologi terhadap persepsi sosial dan kultural.
