Abstract

Abstract Art and Culture learning in elementary schools is often limited by insufficient practice time and facilities, lack of contextualization with students’ local culture, and limited teacher competence. Therefore, a learning approach that connects instructional materials with local cultural contexts is needed, one of which is Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT). This study aims to describe the design of a Kudus batik art learning model based on CRT through collaboration between craftsmen and teachers, test the validity of the learning tools, and analyze the effectiveness of the model in improving students’ appreciation of local wisdom and students' batik-making skills in elementary school students. This research uses a mixed-methods approach with Research and Development (R&D) based on the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The CRT syntax applied includes introduction, cultural identity, cultural understanding, collaboration, critical reflection, transformative construction, and closing. The validation results show that the module achieved 87% validity from content experts (very high) and 80% from media learning experts (high). The evaluation instrument obtained 88% validity (very high). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant improvement after implementation. The N-gain score was 0.60 (moderate) with 60.46% effectiveness, showing that the model is quite effective in improving students’ appreciation of local culture. The performance test showed an average score of 88%, indicating that students are highly skilled in the students' batik-making skills.

Abstract

Picture storybooks play an important role in supporting children's literacy because they combine text, illustrations, colors, characters, and storylines in an engaging manner. However, the dominance of digital illustrations can create a uniform visual appearance and diminish the presence of natural textures typically found in manual artwork. This research aims to explain the application of manual-digital mixed media techniques in the design of a children's picture storybook entitled Bubu si Kelinci Imut. The research employs a design method with a qualitative descriptive approach conducted through three stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. The pre-production stage includes the development of story concepts, narratives, mood boards, character designs, media selection, and storyboards. The production stage involves creating sketches and applying manual coloring techniques using watercolor on watercolor paper, after which the illustrations are scanned at a resolution of 300 dpi and digitally processed using Procreate. The post-production stage includes the preparation of typography, cover design, layouts, page numbering, and book mockups using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. The design results demonstrate that the manual-digital mixed media technique can produce illustrated storybooks with natural visual textures, more expressive colors, organized layouts, and print-ready finishes. This approach provides an alternative method for children's book design by combining the tactile qualities of traditional media with the flexibility and efficiency of digital technology.

Abstract

Culture-based local content learning often presents cultural heritage as learning material, while the processes through which students develop cultural understanding through direct engagement with cultural practices remain insufficiently explained. This issue is important because local content education provides a curricular space for connecting students with cultural knowledge through contextual learning experiences. This study aimed to explore how Topeng Cirebon practice-based learning enables students to experience, interpret, and reflect on cultural practices. Using a qualitative case study design, the study involved 28 students, two teachers, and three Topeng Cirebon cultural practitioners in Cirebon, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations of learning activities, semi-structured interviews with teachers and cultural practitioners, and documentation that included field notes and records of learning activities. The data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed three interconnected processes. First, students engaged directly with cultural practice through material activities, tools, and mask-making processes. Second, through visual experience, dialogue, and interaction with teachers and cultural practitioners, students began to connect mask characteristics with practical experiences and associated cultural meanings. Third, students reflected on their experiences by recalling the characters they selected, the difficulties they encountered, and the processes they had undergone. These findings suggest that practice-based cultural learning can support the development of cultural understanding through direct engagement, interpretation, social interaction, and reflection.
