Abstract

Kaffir lime peel extract (Citrus hystrix DC.) contains flavonoids and alkaloids still rarely used as medicine; however, its toxicity is lack of the research until now. The research aimed to determine the effects of toxicity in the extracts by Brine Shrimp Lethality test (BSLT). The extraction used maceration and infusion. The former used ethanol of 70% with the thick extract of 3.81 mg and the letter used aquadest with the dried extract of 2.77 mg. The screening-was conducted by observing the color change in the extract and obtained the toxicity effects at the concentration of 1 ppm, 3 ppm, 5 ppm, 7 ppm, and 9 ppm by obtaining LC50 values for both the ethanol extract of 0.98 ppm and water extract of 1.20 ppm. The results showed that the water and ethanol extracts of kaffir lime peel had toxic properties.

Abstract

Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) have anticancer and antioxidant activities; soursop leaves contain substances with the potential as antioxidants, such as flavonoids. Antioxidant assays and total flavonoid content from the three largest producing regions in South Sulawesi Province, namely Gowa, Takalar, and Pinrang, were carried out to obtain data on the antioxidant activity and flavonoid content of soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) three areas. Total Flavonoid content was determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and antioxidant activity was measured by the DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl Hydrazyl) method. According to the study, soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) from the Gowa, Takalar, and Pinrang regions have total flavonoid levels of 7,6484 mg QE/g, 3,74429 mg QE/g, and 3,3105 mg QE/g, respectively, and IC50 values of 70.509 g/mL, 102.159 g/mL, and 99.246 g/mL, respectively. The results showed that soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) from the Gowa area had the highest flavonoid content and antioxidant activity. Gowa region could be the best source of soursop leaves for developing soursop as an herbal remedy.

Abstract

Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) is traditionally consumed as both food and medicine in Indonesia. Its fruit and seeds contain bioactive compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, polyphenols, and unsaturated fatty acids with recognized antioxidant potential. This study compared the antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts from bitter melon seeds and fruit using the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay. Extraction was conducted by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with ethanol as solvent, and antioxidant activity was expressed as quercetin equivalents (mg QE/g extract). The seed extract showed an antioxidant value of 8.680 mg QE/g, while the fruit extract exhibited 8.626 mg QE/g. The statistical analysis showed that the p-value was greater than 0.05, indicating no significant difference between the two extracts. This suggests that both extracts exhibit comparable antioxidant activity. These results highlight that both seeds and fruit of M. charantia may serve as promising natural antioxidant sources for functional food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract

Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) is a medicinal plant widely recognizedfor its bioactive compounds, particularly flavonoids, which exhibit potentantioxidant properties. This study aimed to quantify the total flavonoidcontent in the fruits and seeds of M. charantia using UV-Visspectrophotometry and quercetin as a standard compound. Samples wereextracted with 70% ethanol and analyzed by the aluminum chloride–potassium acetate colorimetric method at the specific absorptionwavelength, using quercetin as the standard. The results demonstrated thatthe fruit's average flavonoid content was 2.261 mg QE/g extract, whereasthe seeds contained 2.906 mg QE/g extract. These findings indicate that theseeds possess the same flavonoid concentration as the fruit, highlightingtheir potential as a valuable natural source of antioxidant compounds.
