Abstract

This study aims to examine the progress achieved by participants in a TOEFL preparation program, as reflected in their TOEFL pre-test and post-test scores. The participants attended 24 TOEFL preparation sessions, and their performance before and after completing the program was compared to evaluate the program's effectiveness. The participants of this study consisted of university lecturers from one of the public universities in Indonesia, coming from different disciplines. This study employed a quantitative experimental design. The data were taken from the pre-test and post-test at the beginning and end of the TOEFL preparation program. The pretest and posttest data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test. The findings reveal that although some participants showed individual score fluctuations across the skills, the overall results did not indicate statistically significant improvement in TOEFL performances. The paired sample t-test showed that the p-value of .537 is greater than the conventional significance level of α=0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis failed to be rejected. It can be concluded that the TOEFL preparation for lecturers at a university in North Maluku did not result in a statistically significant improvement in their overall TOEFL scores.

Abstract

The objective of this current community service is to introduce and improve English essay writing skill to students at SMA Negeri 1 Pulau Morotai through four class meetings. 22 eleventh graders of high school students joined as participants throughout the whole session.. The class activities include lecture and game with one pre-test at the first meeting and one post- test at the fourth meeting. Written flashcards are integrated throughout the games in all meetings. Five topics discussed consist of vocabulary building, sentence writing, tenses writing, paragraph writing and essay writing. The result shows that (1) the students were successfully introduced to the concept of English essay writing considering the completion of all games throughout the meetings and overall increase of scores of post-test compared to pre-test, however, (2) the students’ improvements can only be heavily found on word, sentence, and tenses level questions. In order words, students’ difficulties on paragraph and essay level questions remained.

Abstract

Desa Kolorai Kec. Morotai Selatan merupakan salah satu Desa dengan potensisektor perikanan yang sangat potensial. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pendidikankemaritiman oleh prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dilakukan secara terbuka di pesisir Pantai Desa Kolorai. Jumlah peserta yang hadir terdiri dari anak-anak di tingkat sekolah dasar sebanyak 25 orang. Peserta yang partisipasi kemudian di arahkan untuk berkumpul di titik sentral kegiatan. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan mempelajari berbagai macam objek yang di susun sesuai rangkaian kegiatannya. Rangkaian kegiatan terdiri dari, 1) Bermain dan Belajar kosakata dalam bahasa Inggris, 2) mengenal objek di sekitar pesisir pantai dan di laut, sekaligus menyebutkan dalam kosa kata bahasa inggris, 3) Permainan dan Game, 4) membuat kalimat sederhana dengan bahasa inggris terhadap objek sekitar, dan 5) menyanyikan lagu bahasa inggris. Hasil kegiatan ini didapatkan bahwa pelaksanaan kegiatan pendidikan kemaritiman di Desa Kolorai, memberikan efek stimulus bagi anak-anak, mereka termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa inggris. Selain itu, Peserta (anak-anak) merasa antusias dan mudah dalam mempelajari bahasa inggris dan dapat dipraktekan saat kegiatan dilaksanakan.

Abstract

The limited production of scientific publications by teachers in Indonesia's disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions continues to constrain the development of teacher professionalism and a sustainable literacy culture. This community engagement program was designed to strengthen teachers' capacity to produce scientific papers, document evidence-based best practices, and utilize the Education Report Card as a foundation for school improvement planning. The program was implemented over four months through a collaborative partnership involving the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Pasifik Morotai, Save the Children, and the Stimulant Institute across 13 partner elementary schools in Pulau Morotai. A participatory and collaborative approach was adopted through In-Service Training (IST), On-Service Training (OST), followed by continuous mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation. The program substantially improved teachers' competence in academic writing and reflective teaching practices. Overall, 90% of the scientific manuscripts were completed and submitted to national journals, while 12 of the 13 participating schools successfully produced best-practice reports that satisfied the program standards. The mentoring process also fostered professional learning communities that strengthened collaboration among teachers. These findings indicate that sustained collaborative mentoring provides an effective strategy for cultivating teacher literacy and supporting continuous educational quality improvement in 3T regions.

Abstract

The scholarly discussion surrounding the implications of World English (WE) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in English language teaching has been taking place for decades. As part of the expanding circle country based on Kachru's Three Concentric Circles, Indonesia considers English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and has been gradually influenced by the conceptual frameworks of WE and ELF. This study aims to critically examine the existing literature on the incorporation of ELF into EFL classrooms in Indonesia, with a focus on the following questions: (1) What are the types of ELF concepts that have been introduced to the EFL context in Indonesia? (2) How do teachers perceive and approach the incorporation of ELF in EFL classes? (3) What are the potential opportunities for incorporating ELF in the Indonesian EFL context? and (4) What are the potential challenges facing the incorporation of ELF in the Indonesian EFL context? The findings of this study reveal that the types of ELF in Indonesia can be found in code-mixing and the uniqueness of articles and plurals by Indonesian speakers of English in an ELF context. Half of the teachers observed in the studies were found to be familiar with ELF, with many potentials for implementing ELF in Indonesian EFL considering the fact that Indonesia is as a multilingual country with diverse linguistic culture, and many scholars working on policy recommendations. However, the challenges of ELF in Indonesia still exist due to the practices of native speakers' ideology in Indonesia that have arguably been implemented since the beginning of English language teaching in Indonesia.
