Abstract

This study examines the diversification of employment in strengthening the socioeconomic resilience of local communities living around the PT. VDNI nickel smelter in Morosi. Economic dependency predominantly on the mining sector increases community vulnerability to commodity price fluctuations and policy changes affecting the industry. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with residents of Morosi District to analyze the impact of employment diversification on their socioeconomic stability. The findings indicate that employment diversification contributes to enhancing economic stability and strengthening community social bonds, helping communities adapt more effectively to economic changes. These results support the theory of socioeconomic resilience, highlighting the importance of supplementary income and robust social connections in navigating economic uncertainties. The study concludes by recommending government and corporate support through training programs and the development of new economic sectors to achieve long-term sustainability.

Abstract

The continuous growth of coastal populations increases the complexity of social and economic problems in fishing communities, particularly related to dependency on patron-client relationships. This study aims to analyze the pattern of dependency in patron-client relations within the fishing community of Dawi-dawi Subdistrict, Pomalaa District, Kolaka Regency. The research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Informants were selected purposively, consisting of fishermen as clients, fish dealers as patrons, and community leaders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing with triangulation techniques to ensure data validity. The results of the study show that patron-client relations are formed due to unequal access to capital, markets, and means of production. Fishermen’s dependency is reinforced through debt mechanisms, obligations to sell catches below market price, and informal socio-economic support from patrons. In the context of fluctuating income due to uncertain seasons and weather, patronage functions as an informal social safety net that fills the gap in access to formal financial institutions. However, this relationship also reproduces structural inequalities that limit the economic independence of fishermen. This study affirms that patron-client relations are not only an adaptive strategy but also a social structure that has the potential to hinder the empowerment of coastal communities. Therefore, strengthening formal institutions and community-based empowerment strategies are needed to reduce dependency and promote the independence of fishermen.

Abstract

Students often experience difficulties in developing research instruments, particularly in formulating variables, constructing indicators, designing questionnaire items, and aligning instruments with research problems. This community service program aimed to improve students’ competence in developing research instruments through structured online platform-based training. The program was conducted from November to December 2025 at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Halu Oleo University, involving 94 students. The activity was implemented through preliminary needs assessment, preparation of training materials, presentations, demonstrations, guided practice, group discussions, feedback sessions, and evaluation. Students were introduced to the principles of research instrument development, including variable formulation, indicator construction, questionnaire design, validity and reliability concepts, and the use of digital platforms such as Google Forms and Microsoft Forms. The results showed notable improvement in students’ competencies. Students’ basic understanding of research instrument development increased from 38 students (40.4%) before the training to 80 students (85.1%) after the training. Their understanding of fundamental methodological principles improved from 42 students (44.7%) to 75 students (79.8%), while their ability to align research instruments with research problem formulation increased from 33 students (35.1%) to 71 students (75.5%). These findings indicate that online platform-based training contributed positively to strengthening students’ methodological competence and digital literacy in developing research instruments.

Abstract

Illegal Gold Mining (IGM) represents a complex social-ecological issue that contributes to environmental degradation, social vulnerability, and unsustainable community livelihoods. This study aims to analyze the process of social-ecological transformation among former illegal gold miners through the Cisangku Conservation Village Model (CVM) in the buffer zone of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through source, method, and time triangulation. The findings indicate that the Cisangku Conservation Village Model has facilitated social-ecological transformation by shifting community livelihoods from illegal gold mining to conservation-based economic activities, including traditional ground coffee production, endemic plant seedling nurseries, and conservation-based ecotourism. These livelihood transitions increased the average income of members by 42%, expanded employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, engaged 69% of former illegal miners in conservation activities, and supported environmental rehabilitation through the planting of 356,000 trees. The transformation process was driven by collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, local communities, and the leadership of a local hero, which strengthened community participation and promoted behavioral change. The study concludes that conservation-based community empowerment is an effective strategy for achieving social-ecological transformation, strengthening sustainable livelihoods, and supporting sustainable development.
