Abstract

Technological innovations have significantly influenced language learning approaches, particularly among Arabic Literature students. Duolingo, a gamified language learning application, has gained popularity for vocabulary development. However, its effectiveness in academic contexts remains underexplored. This study employed a mixed-methods design to assess Duolingo’s impact on vocabulary acquisition among 50 Arabic Literature students at Hasanuddin University. Participants completed pre- and post-tests over a two-week period of Duolingo use. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to collect students’ perceptions of the app's usability and educational value. Findings revealed that 74% of students improved their vocabulary scores, with an average increase of 4.8 points. Students reported that Duolingo’s spaced repetition and gamification features enhanced motivation and vocabulary retention. However, 24% showed slight score declines, attributing this to the app’s limited focus on grammar, writing, and speaking—skills essential for academic success. While Duolingo supports vocabulary development through engaging and interactive methods, it falls short in providing comprehensive language instruction. These limitations suggest the necessity of integrating supplementary learning tools to support grammar and productive language skills. Duolingo can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for vocabulary learning but should not replace holistic language instruction. Future research should investigate the incorporation of artificial intelligence to enhance its capabilities in grammar and speaking skill development.

Abstract

Religious ritual practices among the younger generation are declining due to technological advancements, cultural shifts, social changes, and evolving lifestyles. Barzanji, as an oral tradition within Islamic societies, plays a vital role in preserving spiritual and cultural values. Yet with the diminishing religious ritual engagement among youth, this traditional practice faces preservation challenges. This study aims to examine the phenomena underlying Barzanji practice among students as a spiritual medium, reflected through their perceptions of the tradition. The subjects—purposively selected undergraduate students from Hasanuddin University's Arabic Literature Department (2021-2024 cohorts)—represent future cultural preservation agents as Barzanji practitioners. Data collection employed in-depth interviews, with analysis conducted through data compilation, reduction, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that students hold complex perspectives on the relationship between tradition, social identity, and religious values. They perceive the Barzanji tradition not merely as cultural heritage, but as a vital vehicle for character development and spiritual formation. Thus, preserving this tradition necessitates a holistic approach extending beyond ritual practice to incorporate educational and discursive initiatives that enrich understanding and foster active community-level participation in safeguarding religious rituals.

Abstract

Songs are a form of oral literature capable of conveying messages through language and music. This study analyzes the meaning of the lyrics in Atuna Tufuli, popularized by Shirine, using Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory of poetry. The research aims to uncover meaning through four key elements: displacing, distorting, and creating meaning; heuristic and hermeneutic reading; matrix; and model and hypogram. This descriptive-qualitative research employs a library study approach. The findings show that the lyrics convey complex expressions of love and longing through indirect expression. Heuristic and hermeneutic readings reveal restrained emotional expressions. The matrix emphasizes the desire of children in conflict areas to live in peace and freedom. The model and hypogram indicate intertextual connections with universal themes of longing for a normal childhood and peace—elements also found in classical Arabic poetry. These recurring themes evoke empathy and reflect a broader call for attention to children affected by war and violence.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the forms of illocutionary acts and impoliteness strategies in anger utterances directed at women in the Saudi Arabian series Takki. In Arab culture, angry utterances are not merely emotional expressions but serve as tools for enforcing social norms and patriarchal control. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data, consisting of dialogue excerpts, were analyzed using Searle's speech act theory and Culpeper's theory of impoliteness. The results show that anger utterances in Takki are dominated by directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative acts, accompanied by impoliteness strategies, including insults, prohibitions, threats, and verbal abuse. These utterances reflect unequal power relations between men and women and reinforce patriarchal structures in Saudi society. This study confirms that language functions as a significant tool of social control in cultures where family honor is paramount.
