Abstract

The South African automotive industry has undergone significant transformation from a domestically protected market to a globally integrated export-oriented sector. This paper examines the institutional and firm-level dynamics that have shaped this evolution, particularly under the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) and its successor, the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP). The study aims to understand how industrial policies and institutional configurations interact to enable or constrain structural transformation and inclusive development. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on policy documents, industry reports, and interviews with key stakeholders. Findings reveal that while policy reforms have effectively enhanced export performance and attracted foreign direct investment, they have fallen short in fostering deep supplier development, local content expansion, and technological upgrading. Moreover, institutional fragmentation and weak coordination have limited the developmental impact of these policies. The study also explores emerging challenges such as the shift toward electric vehicles and the need for green industrialization, arguing that future policy must address both competitiveness and sustainability. The research underscores the necessity of coherent institutions and localized capability building to realize inclusive industrial transformation. These insights have implications for industrial policy design not only in South Africa but also in other developing economies pursuing structural transformation in the context of global value chains and environmental imperatives.

Abstract

This research leverages Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) with the Frobenius norm to analyze news articles from Kompas about the relocation of Indonesia's capital to Nusantara. The study is significant as it provides insights into public and media perceptions documented by Kompas, identifies critical issues surrounding this transformative national project, and demonstrates the utility of NMF in analyzing Indonesian-language news texts, particularly in the context of public policy and media discourse. A dataset of news articles related to Ibu Kota Nusantara was preprocessed through cleaning, normalization, stemming/lemmatization, and tokenization to prepare it for topic modeling. Using TF-IDF for feature extraction, Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) with Frobenius norm as the loss function was applied to generate topics, which were evaluated based on coherence scores and manual analysis for relevance and interpretability. This study identified five distinct topics related to Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) from Kompas news articles during January-March 2024, covering community preparations, toll road developments, buffer zone status, groundbreaking events, and ASN housing. Using the NMF model and c_uci coherence scoring, the study achieved a high coherence score of 0.991, indicating semantically connected terms that facilitate topic interpretation. The alignment between Wordcloud and NMF results demonstrates both methods' focus on significant terms, with Wordcloud highlighting key words and NMF providing a deeper structural analysis of topic interrelations.

Abstract

The development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) is an important milestone in Indonesia's history. The existence of the IKN is expected to encourage inclusive and equitable economic growth throughout Indonesia. The support of the Indonesian people for the IKN is significant. The public obtains information about the IKN through the mass media. The purpose of this study was to examine the way online media presents news regarding Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) and to analyze the primary subjects emphasized in the news coverage. The study examines the news subjects related to IKN on the online media platforms Detik.com and Kompas.com utilizing the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model and Robert M. Entman's framing technique. The subject analysis yielded 15 primary topics for each media channel. Detik.com mostly covers topics related to politics, investment, IKN construction projects, and accommodation. On the other hand, Kompas.com mainly focuses on investment, the IKN Authority, IKN construction projects, and infrastructure. These themes are the most significant subjects in IKN news coverage across all media platforms, based on their weight and probability. The news framing of Detik.com and Kompas.com is generally characterized by a neutral or favorable tone, to promote public understanding, acceptance, and endorsement of the development of IKN. Favorable media coverage can assist the administration in garnering popular backing and guaranteeing the triumph of the IKN project. Both media outlets present a positive framing on IKN's future and highlight the significance of infrastructure projects in attracting additional investment.

Abstract

This study examines the role of digital empowerment in strengthening community participation within Bali’s culture-based tourism villages. Using a qualitative descriptive approach supported by quantitative data from the Bali Provincial Tourism Office (Disparda, 2025), the research analyzes 505 tourism attractions categorized by type—natural, cultural, and artificial—and by compliance with tourism standardization criteria. Results indicate that only 20.2% of attractions are compliant, highlighting significant disparities in digital readiness and management quality. Gianyar and Badung Regencies show higher preparedness for digital promotion, while Buleleng, Klungkung, and Karangasem require focused efforts in digital literacy and content creation. The study’s novelty lies in integrating quantitative indicators of tourism feasibility with qualitative assessments of digital education and empowerment. By linking compliance data with community digital capacity, the findings offer strategic insights for policymakers and tourism stakeholders. The study concludes that advancing digital skills and literacy among local tourism actors is essential for fostering sustainable, inclusive, and culturally grounded digital tourism development in Bali.

Abstract

Digital transformation has blurred the boundaries between the sacred and the profane, positioning social media not merely as a means of communication but also as a new arena for religious expression. In the context of Balinese Hinduism, the translocation of sacred spaces onto digital timelines raises questions about how sacredness is produced, perceived, and renegotiated within the digital ecology. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of uploaded sacredness by emphasizing the dynamics of visual representation, authority, and online community validation. This research employs a qualitative approach through digital ethnography and visual anthropology. Data were collected through online observation, documentation of 120 posts on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube (2022–2024), as well as semi-structured interviews with 20 key informants, including priests, content creators, and Hindu practitioners. Data analysis was conducted inductively through visual coding, digital discourse analysis, and ethnographic interpretation. The study reveals four main findings. First, sacred spaces are aesthetically represented through photos, videos, and poetic captions that extend religious experiences into the virtual sphere. Second, the emergence of hybrid rituals marks the convergence of offline ritual practices and online content production. Third, religious authority shifts into the digital realm, producing dynamics of post-traditional religiosity in which young priests and content creators become authoritative figures. Fourth, community validation through likes, comments, and reshares constitutes the legitimacy of digital sacredness, although often accompanied by tensions between sanctity and commodification. The study demonstrates that sacredness does not disappear in its translocation to social media but is re-mediated through visual aesthetics, community participation, and platform logics. This research contributes to the study of religion, visual culture, and digital anthropology by asserting that uploaded sacredness is a hybrid religious phenomenon that is both global and local, while also enriching theoretical frameworks on religious mediation in the era of digital disruption.

Abstract

Research regarding topic modeling on the coverage of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in national mass media remains limited. This study aims to not only model IKN-related topics but also rigorously evaluate the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model to ensure its robustness for future implementation. The dataset comprises 1,498 news articles gathered from prominent Indonesian online media, specifically Detik (1,050 articles) and Kompas (448 articles). The methodology involves experimental variations of LDA parameters, including document volume, maximum features, and topic count, utilizing the Scikit-learn library. The results indicate that an increase in data volume and feature dimensions significantly correlates with longer computation times and a higher number of epochs required for convergence. Furthermore, the expansion of variables and data volume resulted in more negative log-likelihood values and increased perplexity, suggesting that model complexity challenges predictive precision. A convergence threshold of $1e^{-2}$ was applied to optimize the training cessation point. While this study establishes a baseline for static topic modeling, future research implies the necessity of Dynamic Topic Modeling (DTM) to capture the temporal evolution of topics, a dimension not addressed by the standard LDA model.
