Abstract

The partners of this program are UPTD SD Negeri 32 Barru and the Department of Education and Culture of the Barru Regency Government. This community service activity aims to provide understanding and knowledge to the community regarding policies and the history of local languages as a means to explore the existence of regional languages themselves. The enhancement of understanding about local language policies and history is integrated with a workshop on regional language preservation through the strategic use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to develop and improve practical skills in creating learning processes not only through traditional approaches but also through technological approaches that are effective and easy to use. This program supports the preservation of regional languages through innovative and effective utilization of AI, while also enriching insights into the relationship between technology and regional language learning, thereby producing concrete outputs such as lesson plans, learning modules, or actions that can be implemented after the workshop.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has brought new opportunities for preserving and revitalizing local languages in Indonesia. This study, titled “Transforming Bugis Language Learning through Digital Approaches: A Study of the MGMP Workshop in Barru Regency”, investigates the implementation of digital-based learning innovations for Bugis language teachers in Barru Regency. The workshop, attended by 30 members of the Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Bahasa Bugis, was designed to strengthen teachers’ competence in utilizing digital tools to enhance the teaching and learning of the Bugis language. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study explored participants’ experiences, learning outcomes, and perceptions toward the integration of technology in local language education. The findings indicate that the workshop significantly improved teachers’ understanding of digital pedagogy and their ability to design interactive learning materials using applications such as Quizizz, Baamboozle, and Canva. Participants reported higher confidence in developing engaging classroom activities that incorporate cultural elements of the Bugis language through multimedia and gamified platforms. Moreover, the workshop fostered collaborative learning and increased awareness of the importance of digital transformation in maintaining linguistic and cultural identity. This study concludes that digital approaches can play a vital role in transforming local language education by bridging traditional teaching with contemporary technological innovation. The MGMP workshop in Barru Regency demonstrates a practical model for empowering teachers and promoting sustainable language preservation in the digital era. The findings highlight the potential of integrating digital literacy and cultural education as complementary pathways to ensure that regional languages such as Bugis remain vibrant, relevant, and appreciated by younger generations.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ understanding of the Makassar local language among eighth-grade students at SMP Telkom Makassar. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of seven Grade VIII classes involving 183 students. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test administered before and after the instructional intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and using normalized gain (g) based on Hake’s formula. The results show that the average pre-test scores ranged from 35.58 to 43.27 and increased to 62.24–83.52 in the post-test. The g-Hake analysis indicates that six classes achieved a medium improvement category (g = 0.342–0.557), while one class reached a high category (g = 0.734), with an overall weighted g of 0.513. These findings indicate that Makassar language instruction is effective in improving students’ understanding and has potential to strengthen linguistic competence and preserve local culture in schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the meaning structure constructed in the lyrics of the Bugis song Bunga Ripalla by H. Mustafa Bande using a Saussurean semiotic framework. Although regional song lyrics in Indonesia have been examined from linguistic and cultural perspectives, detailed structural semiotic analyses of traditional Bugis songs remain limited. Addressing this gap, the present research applies a descriptive qualitative design with lyric lines as units of analysis. Data were derived from an authoritative and widely circulated version of the song, verified through cultural informant consultation. The analysis operationalizes Saussure’s signifier–signified model to identify symbolic patterns and relational meaning structures. The findings reveal four dominant symbolic clusters: (1) elevation imagery (mountain/height) representing idealized expectation, (2) flight imagery (bird/wings) symbolizing striving beyond limitation, (3) boundary imagery (sky edge/path) signifying obstruction, and (4) floral imagery (fenced flower) representing restricted love. These interrelated signs construct a coherent emotional progression from idealization to disappointment and reflective acceptance. The study demonstrates that Bunga Ripalla constructs a unified emotional narrative through culturally grounded signifier–signified relations that reflect Bugis perspectives on love, aspiration, and social limitation. The research contributes to semiotic theory application in regional literature and expands scholarly attention to Bugis cultural texts.
