Abstract

This study examines the historical development of hadith, the characteristics of hadith schools, and the driving and inhibiting factors of its dissemination in three major centers of Islamic civilization: Basrah, Kufah, and Syam. Employing a historical-critical approach, data were collected through literature studies of primary and secondary sources and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that Basrah is known for its rationalist methodology, Kufah excels in the tradition of transmission criticism, while Syam demonstrates a synthesis of traditionalist approaches and extensive hadith dissemination practices. However, political conflicts, sectarian differences, and limited access to scholars are the primary obstacles to hadith development in these regions. These findings underscore the importance of an integrative approach in hadith studies, harmonizing traditional and modern methods to better understand the legacy of Islamic scholarship. This research also encourages cross-regional and periodical studies to enrich comprehensive insights into hadith history, offering a fresh perspective for contemporary Islamic studies.

Abstract

The Umirtu an uqotila an-naas hadith often draws attention in Islamic legal discourse, sparking profound questions about its meaning in social and legal contexts. This study offers a fresh perspective by combining thematic analysis with an in-depth review of hadith commentary (syarah) and scholarly interpretations. By weighing the wisdom behind the text and its legal implications, the research highlights the importance of understanding this hadith comprehensively and contextually. The findings affirm that narrow interpretations can lead to detrimental misunderstandings, while a balanced approach paves the way for a more relevant and humane application of Islamic law. This article calls readers to delve into the depths of wisdom and legalities, harmonizing the two in addressing the challenges of contemporary Islamic thought.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in encouraging social change during three important phases in Islamic history, namely the Khulafaur Rashid, the Umayyad and Abbasid periods, and assesses its relevance in contemporary contexts. This study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method on primary and secondary sources that contain hadith and historical records related to social transformation in each period. The results of the study show that during the time of Khulafaur Rashidin, hadith became a normative foundation in organizing socio-political life, including in the distribution of zakat, the protection of minorities, and deliberation in decision-making. In the Umayyad and Abbasid periods, hadith was used as a tool of legitimacy of power, but it also underwent significant codification and standardization, making it an instrument of institutionalized social reform. Contemporary discussions reveal that the values in the hadith remain relevant in promoting social justice agendas, inclusive education, gender equality, and peace. However, challenges arise when the hadith is interpreted textualistically without considering the context and purpose of the shari'a (maqāṣid al-sharī'ah). This study concludes that hadith has great transformative potential if interpreted contextually and progressively, but risks becoming a tool of conservatism if used narrowly. Therefore, hermeneutic and maqāṣid approaches need to be integrated in the understanding of hadith in the modern era.
