Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the deaf family affects the psychological of the major character in Coda (2021) and the major character's struggle to overcome her psychological condition in Coda (2021). The study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film entitled Coda, directed by Sian Heder and produced by Fabrice Gianfermi, Philippe Rousselet, Jerôme Seydoux, and Patrick Wachsberger in 2021 as the objective research. The collecting data of the research method includes watching and reading, identifying, and selecting. The data of the research method is displayed, analyzed, and explained. The researcher analyzes the data by using Sigmund Freud's theory of Psychoanalysis to analyze the data by displaying, explaining, and interpreting it. The result of the study are the representation of the deaf family's influence on the major character's psychology in the movie Coda (2021), the deaf family's influence on Ruby's psychology includes components such as id, ego, and super-ego. In addition, this study identifies various forms of anxiety and ego defense mechanisms experienced by Ruby; and the major character struggles to overcome her psychological condition. This study includes the major character's way of dealing with her psychological problems.

Abstract

This study attempts to examine how the 2019 David Michod film "The King" depicts revolt and the monarchical order. The film tells the tale of Prince Hal, who succeeds his father, King Henry IV, as King Henry V. Hal had to deal with a number of difficulties as a young monarch, such as disagreements with disobedient noblemen. Qualitative approaches are the primary tool used in this study. The 2019 film "The King" serves as the primary source of data. The process of gathering data involved reading, observing, recognizing, categorizing, and choosing pertinent information. As part of the data analysis process, the data were presented, clarified, and interpreted using conflict theory. According to the findings, the film portrays the monarchical system of medieval Europe, in which the king, who holds the throne for successive generations, possesses ultimate power. The film also depicts insurrection brought on by dissatisfaction with the king's choices. In addition, the movie looks at how unrest could be sparked by instability and discontent inside the royal circle.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze : (1) the temperament of the characters in the American and Korean versions of the film Little Women, (2) the comparison of human temperaments in the American and Korean versions of the film Little Women. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the objective of the research, which is Little Women (2019) American movie directed by Greta Gerwig, and Little Women (2022) Korean drama directed by Kim Hee Won. The researcher analyzes the data by using a Comparative Literature Study with the Human Temperament theory by Immanuel Kant. The result of the study : (1) the characters’ temperament of soul presented in the Little Women (2019) movie and Little Women (2022) Korean drama is Choleric Temperament in characters Jo March and Oh In-Kyung, Phlegmatic Temperament in the character Meg March and Oh In-Hye, Melancholic Temperament in character Beth March and Oh In-Joo, and Sanguinis Temperament in character Amy March; (2) the comparison of the characters’ temperament of the Korean drama Little Women (2022) is inversely proportional to the characters’ temperament of the film Little Women (2019). This is mainly due to the very different backgrounds in both. The film Little Women (2019) is set in the 1980s, whereas the Korean drama Little Women (2022) is set in the present age. With such different socio-cultural conditions, the depiction of the human temperament in the scenes is very different.

Abstract

Understanding how music conveys complex psychological experiences requires both literary and semiotic interpretation. This thesis analyzes the existential crisis reflected in the lyrics of the band Gulch, particularly from their albums Burning Desire to Draw Last Breath and Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress. The analysis applies Roland Barthes’ theory of denotation and connotation to explore how literal (denotative) and symbolic (connotative) meanings in the lyrics reflect deep psychological turmoil and existential anxiety. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The primary data consist of selected song lyrics by Gulch, and the theory of two orders of signification by Roland Barthes is used to decode the embedded meanings within the texts. This study also considers the emotional states and existential conflicts expressed through the lyrical characters. The findings reveal that Gulch’s song lyrics convey profound psychological conditions such as alienation, suicidal ideation, inner conflict, and loss of meaning. Through Barthes’ semiotic lens, these lyrics serve as metaphors for existential suffering and the modern individual’s struggle to find identity and purpose amidst chaos. The violent and surreal imagery, while intense, becomes a literary medium through which existential crises are expressed and interpreted.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze: 1) the representation of capitalism in Paul King’s Wonka (2023), and 2) the capitalism leads to social mobility in Paul King’s Wonka (2023).This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film of Wonka (2023) directed by Paul King as the object of research. The data collection methods include watching, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The researcher utilizes Karl Marx theory of Capitalism to analyze the data through the steps of displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The result of this research shows that: 1) the representation of capitalism in in Paul King’s Wonka (2023) including capitalism is shown through the practice of exploitation, class inequality, and monopoly by the upper class that controls the means of production, 2) the capitalism leads to social mobility in Wonka (2023). Including collective resistance to an oppressive system. The protagonist and his colleagues managed to improve their social position not because the capitalist system provided opportunities, but because of their class consciousness and collective struggle against injustice.

Abstract

This study discusses feminist values and the representation of women’s empowerment in the film Nyad (2023). The film is based on the true story of Diana Nyad, a woman who attempts to fulfill her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida at the age of 60. This research aims to find out how feminist values are represented in the film and how women’s empowerment is shown through the main character. The theory used in this research is Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist theory, especially the idea that women are often seen as “the Other.” This study applies a descriptive qualitative method, with the main data taken from dialogues in the film. The data were collected by watching, identifying, classifying, and analyzing scenes related to feminist values and acts of empowerment. The results show six feminist values in the film, namely equality, resistance, agency, solidarity, empowerment, and self-determination. The film also shows how Diana fights against age limitations, public doubt, and social pressure. The film delivers a message that women deserve to be heard, respected, and given equal opportunities in life.
