Abstract

Ranuyoso is one of the villages in Lumajang Regency which has the potential to become a tourism village. This potential is supported by the existence of an 8 (eight) hectare unused land owned by Perhutani, whose management rights are handed over to villagers, but its utilization has not been maximized to support the program for establishing a tourism village. Therefore, this community service program is the first step towards realizing the development of Ranuyoso as a tourism village. The activity carried out is in the form of data collection as a reference for mapping the concept of the Ranuyoso tourism village. By applying the principles of Community Based Tourism (CBT), this activity involves the active role of villagers in Focus Group Discussions (FGD), interview, and field observation. The results of this activity show that Ranuyoso village has several potentials in the form of hills, springs, fruits, and distinctive arts and culture that can be developed as assets of a tourism village. These potentials are the basis for formulating the concept of Ranuyoso tourism village, namely a tourism village that presents the integration of water tourism, culture and arts tourism, fruit tourism, and adventure tourism. In addition, this activity also resulted in a draft of cooperation agreement between Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya (FCS UB) and Forest Village Community Institution (LMDH) as a legal basis for discussing cooperation related to the development of Ranuyoso..

Abstract

This study aims to examine the portrait of linguistic landscape (LL) and its social aspects as reflected in the health protocols (Prokes ‘Protokol Kesehatan') banners and billboards in public spaces in Malang. Thus, it attempts to answer two questions: (1) what are the perceptions and attitudes of the people of Malang city towards the various calls for health protocol? and (2) how effective are the calls in impeding the outbreak of Covid-19 in Malang city? According to Backhaus (2006), several important criteria to consider to ensure valid data collection in LL study are geographic location, characteristics of banners and billboards, and what counts as monolingual and multilingual banners. The research areas were therefore divided into two: (1) some residential areas and shopping centers in Malang city to collect non-official signs and (2) city centers which include major arterial roads, Pasar Besar area, city square, and areas around the city hall to collect official signs. Data in the form of photos of billboards and banners were taken using a mobile phone camera between May and July 2021. The curated 63 photos of Prokes banners and billboards were then qualitatively analyzed following the LL framework (Backhaus, 2006; Spolsky & Cooper, 1991) and triangulated with data from interviews. Adopting random sampling technique, 11 interviewees belonging to the middle class and 10 from the lower class were chosen to determine public perceptions of the effectiveness of the calls. The results show that the non-official banners featured more multilingual banners than did the official ones, and hence amplifying the results of the existing research on LL. As for the respondents’ perception, official banners were more preferable as they used Boso Walikan and were more assertive and illustrative. Although the two respondent groups agreed that the banners were not effective, they had different views about what mediums were more effective. The middle class considered campaigns using social media to be more effective, while the lower class preferred direct counseling.

Abstract

“Selera Nusantara” is a mobile simulation game from Indonesia. The game not only offers cooking simulation challenges for the players but also provides information about the main characters who appear between game levels. The existence of story elements in the permainan seluler is the focus of this research. In this case, we chose “Selera Nusantara – Episode: Nasi Goreng” as the object of study. This research is about how the narrative aspect in the permainan seluler "Selera Nusantara – Episode: Nasi Goreng" is built. The arguments proposed by Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Smith, and Tosca in their book, Understanding Video Games (2020), are used as the theoretical framework of this research, especially the discussion about narrative. The results of this research show that the narrative aspect in "Selera Nusantara - Episode: Nasi Goreng" is constructed through a series of cutscenes which, if separated from the game mechanics and put together sequentially from level to level of the game, form a progressive plot identical with stories in short stories, novels, or film. Although integrated in the game, the plot does not affect the simulation game session. However, to be able to understand the complete series of stories that form the context of the game world (gamespace), players must go through each stage of the level. Thus, it can be concluded that the story fragments which become the background of "Selera Nusantara – Episode: Nasi Goreng" provide a narrative to the game, which makes it a form of ergodic literature.

Abstract

LINE Webtoon is a popular digital comic platform in Indonesia that accommodates the work of local comic artists, one of which is a comic titled Nusantara Droid War (NDW). The comic carries a glocal spirit by raising the diversity of Indonesian culture through the depiction of droid characters and present them with a typical Japanese-style shonen manga plot. The intertwining of various folklore and culture of the archipelago with the popular narrative of shnen manga shows the existence of intertextuality. Therefore, this study was structured to examine the intertextuality of NDW in webtoon characters and narratives by applying Roland Barthes' postulates regarding the Five Codes of semiotic elements in texts to interpret intertextuality that is embodied in a series of lexia in NDW. The results of this study indicate that the Nusantara Droid War (NDW) text is a readerly text, although it is not absolute. The intertextuality depicted through the Five Codes: hermeneutic, proairetic, semantic, symbolic, and cultural/referential is dominated by texts originating from the Mahabharata story, legends from Indonesian folklore, and Japanese shounen anime or manga. In this case, referential code contributes the most in lexia, which also indicates that cultural texts play an important role in NDW text building. The discourse of intertextuality leads the NDW reading process to reject the 'artificial thing', namely the market logic that positions popularity and ownership of capital as the main goal in the world of entertainment, including the battle between droids in NDW.

Abstract

Abstract Indonesia consists of individuals who have diverse cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. With the escalation of social problems nowadays, there needs to be a new space for society in which the values of harmony, tolerance and cohesion are nurtured. The government through schools seeks to instill these values. One of the efforts that can be made by schools is through intercultural education. Intercultural education can be integrated into various aspects of school activities, one of which is the teaching of Indonesian Language and Literature subject. Here, the authors attempt to map the extent to which the concept of intercultural education is present through the teaching materials by conducting a case study at SMAN 3 Malang. To analyze the concept of intercultural education at SMAN 3 Malang, the authors reviewed the literary teaching materials used by the teachers and observed the Teaching and Learning Activities in the classrooms. The results of the analysis show that the literary teaching materials used at SMAN 3 Malang already contain the competencies of intercultural education and the concept has been applied in the teaching and learning process. These results are in line with the Core Competencies and Basic Indonesian language Competencies outlined by the Government in an effort to form the space of tolerant and harmonious Indonesian society.
