Abstract

This study investigates the performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by synthesizing evidence from recent empirical studies through a systematic literature review approach. The research analyzes thirty-three peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025 that explicitly discuss MSME performance from multidimensional perspectives. The data collection process followed established systematic review protocols, including identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion of relevant literature. The methodology employed thematic content analysis to classify findings into four major categories: performance measurement, internal determinants, external support, and international comparisons. The results reveal that MSME performance is not only measured by financial indicators such as profit, revenue, and cash flow but also by non-financial aspects including innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainability criteria. The analysis shows that innovation, entrepreneurial orientation, financial literacy, and human resource capacity are the most influential internal factors, while government policies, financial institutions, market access, and infrastructure represent crucial external enablers. The findings further indicate that digitalization and technology adoption play a pivotal role in strengthening MSME competitiveness and resilience, particularly during economic crises and the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the review highlights significant differences between developing and developed countries, where MSMEs in emerging economies face more structural challenges yet often experience greater marginal benefits from digital transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Indonesia’s government policies and institutional readiness in supporting the green transition of the MSME sector based on the ASEAN SME Policy Index 2024. The research employs a descriptive–comparative approach and exploratory qualitative analysis through a review of index documents, national policy reports, and international publications. The results show that Indonesia has experienced an increase in scores across almost all SMEPI dimensions since 2018, especially in access to finance and digitalization of SMEs. However, Indonesia’s achievements remain low in the dimensions of Greening SMEs and Social & Inclusive Enterprises, indicating that the integration of environmental and social aspects into MSME policies has not yet become a primary priority. In terms of policy effectiveness, three national programs—SEHATI (BPJPH), the Green Financing Roadmap (OJK), and the Green Industry Program (Ministry of Industry)—have high relevance to the green transition, but their implementation effectiveness remains limited due to policy fragmentation and low green literacy among MSME actors. Institutional analysis indicates that Indonesia continues to face constraints in technical capacity, inter-ministerial coordination, and governance, particularly the lack of data-driven monitoring mechanisms and an integrated performance evaluation system for green policies. Overall, the study finds an institutional gap between policy design and implementation. These findings highlight the need for cross-sector policy harmonization, strengthening of green regulations and financing, and the development of data-based monitoring systems to support the transformation of MSMEs toward a green economy.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of entrepreneurship education and environmental awareness on students' green entrepreneurial intention, with green entrepreneurial self-efficacy as the mediator. Data were collected through a survey of 150 university students in Makassar using a 1–5 Likert scale and analyzed using SEM-PLS (WarpPLS). The results show that entrepreneurship education and environmental awareness positively affect green entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and that self-efficacy positively affects green entrepreneurial intention. In addition, self-efficacy has been shown to mediate the effects of entrepreneurship education and environmental awareness on green entrepreneurial intention. The findings emphasize the importance of strengthening students' self-confidence through entrepreneurship learning and integrating sustainability issues into campus programs.

Abstract

This study explores how the economic participation of children with special needs (CSN) creates transformative mechanisms within the social sphere of Makassar City. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, I conducted in-depth interviews with 19 informants (7 CSN entrepreneurs, 5 family members, 4 business actors/consumers, and 3 institutional representatives) between March and July 2024. The IPA analysis identified four key themes: (1) the economic domain as an arena for negotiating social identity shifting the label from “pitiable disabled individuals” to “competent economic actors”; (2) sophisticated economic adaptation strategies that foster technical innovation and mobilize social capital; (3) repeated economic interactions that gradually transform public social perceptions, though often generating ambivalent attitudes; and (4) the reinterpretation of the cultural values of siri’ and pacce’ within economic activities, which play an ambivalent role in promoting social inclusion. The findings reveal that economic access not only enhances the financial independence of CSN but, more fundamentally, functions as a mechanism for social acceptance and recognition of their existence in public spaces. Nevertheless, the observed inclusion remains tokenistic—CSN are accepted within the economic space while their social positioning remains marginal. Intersectional analysis further uncovers compounded socio-economic barriers for female CSN (a double disadvantage), while younger generations benefit from the gradual shift in social norms. This study contributes by demonstrating that economic inclusion serves as an alternative pathway toward broader social inclusion, emphasizing the need for a paradigm shift from charity-based to rights-based economic participation to achieve genuine social acceptance.

Abstract

The integration of intangible cultural heritage preservation and environmental sustainability presents complex challenges for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in tourism destinations, particularly within conservation areas such as UNESCO Global Geoparks. This study aims to investigate the dynamics of eco-innovation in the traditional culinary sector of Pangkajene and Kepulauan (Pangkep) Regency, South Sulawesi. Employing a mixed-methods research design combining quantitative surveys and in-depth case studies, this research analyzes three primary heritage commodities: Dange cake, Milkfish (Bandeng) processing, and Sop Saudara. The findings reveal a strong "Authenticity Paradox," where Dange producers maintain wood-fired cooking methods to preserve authentic sensory profiles while incrementally adopting biodegradable packaging innovations. Conversely, the Milkfish processing sector demonstrates high adoption of the circular economy through the transformation of fish scale waste into value-added products. This research also introduces the concept of "Eco-Digital Resilience" as a novel adaptive mechanism, where supply chain digitalization is proven to enhance resource efficiency and facilitate the narrative marketing of green products. The study concludes that the success of eco-innovation in Geopark regions relies not on total technological substitution, but on a hybrid approach that harmonizes ecological efficiency with local wisdom values.
