Abstract

The common social media platform YouTube has encountered an increase in the practice of code-mixing, which is the use of two or more languages in one conversation. Understanding the function of language in communication, managing language difficulties, intercultural disruptions, and TCK identity crisis in a global environment also relies on code-mixing, a critical sociolinguistic phenomenon. The primary objectives of the study are to look into various types of code-mixing and the reasons why people use it in the video Language Barriers, Culture Shock & TCK Identity Crisis ft. Mella Carli on the Indah G Show YouTube channel. This study used a qualitative approach, with data collected through video transcription. This study used content analysis, focusing on examining all possible types of code-mixing as defined by Muysken and the reason for using code-mixing that was argued by Hoffman. The results of this research, firstly the types of code-mixing which were divided into insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Secondly, the reasons for using code-mixing which divides into talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something, quoting somebody else, repetition used for clarification, intentions of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor and expressing group identity. According to the results, alternation is the most common type of code-mixing, and talking about particular topic for the reason.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled An Analysis of Figurative Language on the Song Lyric “Style” by Taylor Swift’s aims to find out the types of figurative language used in Taylor Swift lyrics and to describe the contextual meaning of the figurative language used in Taylor’s lyrics. The research data was obtained from Taylor Swift’s song entitled Style. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method such as observation and library research in collecting research data. The researchers used qualitative theory which goes through a series of steps and iterations: gathering data, examining data, comparing prior data to newer data and developing new data to gather. After analyzing and discussing the lyrics of the song titled Style by Taylor Swift, the researchers can conclude that there are many types of figurative language found in this study. In this study, figurative language found is personification, metaphor, imagery, symbolism, repetition, allusion, consonance and irony. Thus, we can see that the listeners of the song can interpret a song better. Keywords: figurative language, qualitative, descriptive analysis, song.

Abstract

Presupposition is one of the topics in pragmatic studies. In this thesis, the writers focuse more on the discussion of presuppositions in pragmatic studies, where presuppositions are everything that is in one's mind about everything that exists in this world. Presuppositions are needed to understand the meaning of a conversation between the speaker and the listener so that there is no misunderstanding in communication. In this research the writers use a descriptive research method, because all data comes from film script. Presuppositions in Encanto movie taken from the dialogues of the characters in the movie and analyzed based on the theories by Yule (1996) and classifying them into various types of presuppositions. The result of this study shows that there are many variation of presupposition contained in this move script. There are six presuppositions, specifically 5 existential, 14 factive, 1 non-factive, 3 lexical, 23 structural, and 5 counterfactual. Data analysis shows that there are several types of presuppositions contained in this movie. From this research, the writers hope that this thesis can be useful as an additional knowledge for future researchers who discuss pragmatic studies, especially presuppositions.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The United States is a continent full of immigrants. Immigrants are always related to identity issues and cultural adaptation due to diverse backgrounds. The life of immigrants is remarkably interesting to discuss, especially the problems they faced and the process of accepting their lives in the host country. Therefore, this paper will discuss the identity crisis experienced by the main character in pursuing the American dream in Girl in Translation. There are two objectives to be achieved in this study. The first objective is to find out the identity crisis experienced by the main character in Girl in Translation. The second objective is to find out how the main character overcomes the problems she faced. To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer will use mimetic theory as an approach. The method that will be used is qualitative method. Based on the analysis, it can be found that the main character experiences the identity crisis through language, dwelling, food, clothes, lifestyle, and moral. To overcome the identity crisis, the main character uses hybrid identity. The mixed identities make the main character become a Chinese-American. Keywords: main character; identity crisis; the American dream; Chinese immigrants; American culture.
