Abstract

This study examines the adaptation strategies of Banyuwangi artists in musical practices after the 1965 political violence. The stigma attached to the song Genjer-genjer and its allegedly association with the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) affected the local art scene. The research applies the historical method through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings revealed that Banyuwangi musicians shifted their repertoire from social themes to Islamic genres. This transformation constructed a socio-religious identity that protected them from political accusations and sustained local musical traditions. The study highlights music as both a cultural expression and a survival strategy under repressive conditions.

Abstract

This study examines Soekarno’s perspective on Western influences during the 1950s–1960s and its impact on the development of music in Indonesia. The study addresses two main questions: first, how did Soekarno view the West during his presidency; and second, how did this view affect the trajectory of Indonesian music? Employing the historical method, the research integrates heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography to analyze primary and secondary sources. The findings reveal that Soekarno perceived the West as a political and cultural threat, frequently labeling it as “Nekolim” (neo-colonialism and imperialism). He viewed Western music not merely as a foreign art form but as a vehicle of cultural domination that undermined the revolutionary ideals and national identity of Indonesia. As a result, Western-influenced music was subject to prohibition, exemplified by the banning of the ngak-ngik-ngok music, which was considered detrimental to Indonesian cultural values. Soekarno promoted policies aimed at fostering music that aligned with nationalist and revolutionary principles, thereby restricting the development and performance of Western styles within the country. This study concludes that Soekarno’s ideological stance significantly shaped the evolution of Indonesian music during his era. By enforcing cultural policies rooted in nationalism, he directly influenced which musical forms could flourish, emphasizing the creation and preservation of a distinctly Indonesian musical identity

Abstract

The Janger performing art of Banyuwangi is a traditional cultural expression that combines dance, music, dialogue, and comedic oral performance in the Javanese language. Since the early twentieth century, Janger has served as a marker of cultural identity, a medium for moral education, and a space for social solidarity within the local community. However, over the past two decades, Janger has faced significant challenges, including a crisis of regeneration, linguistic shifts resulting from the mixture of Javanese, Osing, and Indonesian, declining performance frequency, and the commodification of art that threatens its authenticity. These conditions reflect a broader phenomenon occurring across Indonesia, where many traditional arts are pressured by modernization and globalization. Despite the rapid growth of cultural tourism in Banyuwangi—marked by major events such as Gandrung Sewu and the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival—Janger has not gained a proportional position in cultural branding strategies. In fact, Janger holds strong potential as an authentic and educational cultural attraction, and it has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage. The Youth Janger Festival program is proposed as a community-based cultural preservation effort aimed at revitalizing Janger through youth engagement, reinforcement of the Javanese language, and the implementation of a participatory festival, ensuring that this traditional art remains sustainable, adaptive, and rooted in Banyuwangi’s local identity.
