This research aims at designing local culture based digital comics for eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Kalipuro, Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. Â These are designed based on the English syllabus of reading skill and are developed in order to improve the studentsâ€™ reading comprehension skill, especially in comprehending narrative texts. Also, it aims at preserving local wisdoms of Banyuwangi through English language teaching. The research and development steps comprise some steps adapted from the pattern developed by Borg and Gall. The researchers administered need analysis to 35 students in class VIII.1 in order to gather information dealing with the materials and media in English language teaching and the need on local culture based digital comics. The data was taken from questionnaire, interview, and document analysis. The results of need analysis reveal that the students need to be taught narrative texts with local culture content and a suitable interesting media in the form of digital comics.Keywords: local wisdom, need analysis, comics, reading.

Critical thinking is the ability to draw conclusions with the right facts and knowledge. Critical thinking is needed in the era of globalization. The low critical thinking skills of students are trained through the PSD learning model. This research was conducted to train students' critical thinking skills with classroom action research methods. The results of the implementation of classroom action research namely in the first cycle of critical thinking skills of students with a score of 61.6% and the second cycle of critical thinking skills of students with a score of 70%. Thus, the application of the PSD model can train students' critical thinking skills with an increase of 8.4%.

Kegiatan sosialisasi strategi pembelajaran tematik di era new normal yang dilaksanakan di ruang virtual bersama guru MI Roudlotut Tholibin, SDIT Al Uswah 1, dan SDIT Al Uswah 2 merupakan salah satu solusi untuk memberikan pemahaman serta keterampilan guru dalam mempersiapkan pembelajaran daring selama masa pandemi COVID 19. Perubahan strategi pembelajaran dari tatap muka langsung menjadi tatap muka daring banyak mengalami kendala, salah satunya kondisi siswa yang memiliki keterbatasan ekonomi sehingga tidak dapat membeli paket data ataupun pulsa. Tujuan kegiatan sosialisasi strategi pembelajaran tematik di era new normal adalah memberikan pemahaman dan keterampilan bagi guru-guru MI/SD untuk menyiapkan pembelajaran mulai dari membuat RPP, implementasi, serta evaluasi secara daring. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, diskusi, dan praktek. Hasil evaluasi kegiatan melalui angket diketahui bahwa peserta telah memahami strategi pembelajaran dengan sistem daring yang telah disampaikan. Penyampaian materi dalam kegiatan ini relatif mudah dipahami. Peserta menunjukkan kemampuan dalam praktek membuat contoh kuis dengan menggunakan platform Kahoot dan pengembangan materi tematik menggunakan platform Camtasia. Peningkatan wawasan dan pemahaman guru tentang stategi dan pengembangan media pembelajaran tematik ini dianggap telah membantu permasalahan mitra terkait kurangnya pemahaman guru tentang penerapan teknologi dalam pembelajaran dan keterbatasan penguasaan guru dalam merancang strategi pembelajaran dan kemampuan pembuatan media berbasis daring.

The development of the digital era requires teachers to insert technology into English instruction. Teachers must be able not only to use the internet and computer software but also to implement technology appropriately in the teaching and learning process in order to help students achieve learning objectives. Many teachers have done inserting technology into English instruction. In addition, research on technology integration in English class has been mushrooming since years ago. However, the evaluation dealing with the implementation of technology in English instruction is limited. This research aims at evaluating how teachers use technology in the teaching and learning process. The evaluation focuses on whether the use of technology has enhanced students’ learning experiences or transformed students’ learning experiences. Four levels of the SAMR model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) are used to assess the implementation. Here, the researchers gauged information from six English teachers of the senior high school in Banyuwangi regency concerning how they use technology in the teaching and learning process.

Digital environment offers teachers and students with a plethora of information and resources for learning. Nowadays, students who are mostly digital natives are used to utilizing technology in their daily life. This condition should make teachers as technology leaders responsible to provide a good learning environment where the students are involved in their own learning and that best suits to them in in a particular context. Therefore, this study aimed at developing local culture based digital comics for narrative reading comprehension and inserting local culture of Banyuwangi in English language teaching. This study followed the research and development design adapting the pattern developed by Borg and Gall. Based on the result of need analysis administered to students in class VIII of SMPN 1 Kalipuro, Banyuwangi, the product was developed by inserting local culture content into narrative texts in the form of digital comics. The digital comics had two titles: The Dance Competition and The Legend of Banyuwangi. The product was validated by the experts and tried out to the students. The result showed that the local culture based digital comics were applicable to be used in the teaching and learning narrative text reading comprehension.

This research is research and development on the development of English textbooks for non-English department using ADDIE model, however this research only the first phase of ADDIE model, which is analysis. This research only describing the process and analyzing toward English textbooks need which is used in teaching and learning to non-English learners. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method, because the data analysis in the form of word. The researcher use three instrument to get the data, they are: questionnaire forgetting deep information of the student need, interview to know the teaching and learning process doing by the lecturer, and documentation to know the learners outcomes in learning English, especially English for general basic courses in the university. Based on research finding and discussion, students purpose in learning English are to be able to speak English in interest with their work, English level of the students are beginner, they understand simple sentence in daily conversation, students’ needs and wishes according with English learning are their English skill can support their academic competence and also their work, students need according with material and assignment is basic material for beginner learners with completed by the assignment, students need according with activities in the classroom is that they want to have active activity by solving the problem in pairs or small group. Based on the interview of the English lecture, the researcher concludes that the students are enthusiastic in the teaching and learning process, Learning method which is used is lecture method and cooperative learning, mastery of the material is still lacking, the average of students skill is at the beginner level. The material which is should be mastered by students are focusing on reading and speaking, read the English literature and English article. Focus on answering the question by correct speaking. For the micro skills, they have to memorize many vocabularies and doing correct practicing in pronounces the word. Based on document analysis, the researcher concludes that: The students are able to translate the text related to their department, the students are able to explain the reading technique of the scientific text to know the information of the text, the students are able to improve speaking skill with correct sentences and other learning outcomes deal with the English lecture.

Learners' Autonomy in The Midst of Covid-19 Pandemic Tri - Mulyati

This study aims to analyze the student's perception of learning autonomy in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The outbreak of this pandemic has switched the learning activities from face-to-face mode to online one. The students in all levels of education institutions, from kindergarten to university, have learned from home since March 2020. This condition yields some challenges among students. Thus, the students' voice dealing with learning autonomy is one of the essential sources to evaluate and redesign Self-Directed Learning during the pandemic. The questionnaire included 30 items was developed. It covered three aspects of learning autonomy, namely, learning planning, monitoring and organizing, and evaluating learning. Seventy-eight students of the English Department participated in this cross-sectional survey. The results reveal that most students have inadequate learning autonomy during online learning mode. The dependency on the lecturers' role is still found as they are not used to online learning before.

Needs Analysis of Banyuwangi Local Wisdoms Based Reading Materials for Junior High School Tri - Mulyati; Zainur Rohman

The purpose of this research is to present the result of needs analysis on Banyuwangi local wisdoms based reading materials for Junior High School. The reading materials are limited on the recount texts. Questionnaires and documentation were used to gain the data from eight year students related to the ideal condition and the real condition of English instruction in SMPN 3 Banyuwangi. The data analysis was conducted by following three steps: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. The result indicated that there was a gap between the ideal condition and the real condition of reading activities. Thus, it can be concluded that it is necessary to develop Banyuwangi local wisdoms based reading materials in SMPN 3 Banyuwangi. The development is based on text-based approach by inserting Banyuwangi culture as the discourse, integrate language components, and use student-centered approach.

One of the most crucial aspects of teaching and learning is the learning material. As a result, teachers must take a variety of steps to ensure that learning materials are successfully presented and that students are happy and focused during teaching and learning activities. This study aims to develop a recount text reading materials based on Banyuwangi local wisdoms for VIII E students of SMPN 3 Banyuwangi and know its feasibility according to material/culture expert and English teacher. This study adopts research and development design based on its aims. The development stages partially taken are need analysis, designing, small group trial, and first revision. The results of development show that the product gained a very feasible level in common based on expert and English teacher’s validation. Therefore, it can be concluded that recount text reading materials based on Banyuwangi local wisdoms can be used in English learning activities in class VIII of SMPN 3 Banyuwangi.
