Abstract

Music videos have become a popular medium for conveying social messages. This study analyzes the representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) messages in Taylor Swift's music video "You Need To Calm Down" using a semiotic approach. An in-depth analysis of the visual symbols, music, and lyrics in the video aims to reveal hidden meanings related to LGBT issues. The results of this study indicate the presence of visual codes that represent the LGBT community, such as the use of bright colors, eye-catching costumes, and scenes showing same-sex relationships, using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. This study makes a significant contribution to understanding how music videos can be used as a tool to campaign for social issues. The findings of this study can be a reference for other researchers who are interested in studying the representation of gender, sexuality, and identity in popular media.

Abstract

Comment activity experienced a significant surge in the period from late March to early April 2025, indicating potential virality. However, interactions after the peak tended to decline and were more one-sided, with few replies given. In addition, the average toxicity score was very low, indicating that the comments in this video tended to be safe and free from harmful content. The significance of these findings shows that the video was able to create a positive and safe space for interaction, but did not encourage further conversation or in-depth discussion

Abstract

Indonesian traditional dance, as part of cultural heritage, contains deep symbolic values. One interesting example is the Salonreng Dance from Ara Village, South Sulawesi, which reflects the relationship between humans and nature, culture, and spiritual power. Although it plays an important role in the lives of the local community, understanding of the symbolic meaning contained in the movements, music, costumes, and rituals of this dance is still limited. This study aims to explore the symbolic meaning in the Salonreng Dance and its role in strengthening the cultural identity of the Ara Village community. This study uses a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis, specifically Ferdinand de Saussure's theory, to understand the relationship between the signifier and the signified in each dance movement. Data was collected through interviews with key informants, participatory observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that each movement in the Salonreng Dance contains symbolic meanings that reflect local cultural values, such as happiness in marriage, acceptance, and maintaining harmony in the household. In addition, Salonreng Dance also plays an important role in strengthening social relationships and preserving ancestral traditions. The significance of these findings lies in a deeper understanding of the role of dance in maintaining local cultural identity and facing the challenges of globalization. This research also contributes to the preservation of Salonreng Dance as a cultural heritage that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.

This article aims to explore the teaching strategies used by public speaking trainers in Makassar City in building participants' confidence, with a focus on strengthening ethos, pathos, and logos as important factors in improving public speaking skills. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive study method, with data collected through in-depth interviews with two main informants, namely Putri Kumalasarisultan and Yudha Prawira Hasta, both of whom are experienced public speaking trainers in Makassar. The results of the study show that the teaching strategies used by both trainers involve experiential learning methods, personal coaching, and the creation of a safe emotional climate to build participants' confidence. Participants' ethos is strengthened through direct experience and personal feedback, while pathos is developed through psychologically supportive classroom design. Participants' logos were strengthened through simulation and role-play techniques that provided real-life speaking experiences and improved their ability to construct logical and structured arguments.
