Abstract

This study comprehensively reviews Wahhabi theology by tracing its history, teachings, and spread, particularly in Indonesia. The Wahhabi movement originated from the ideas of Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (1703–1792 AD) in Najd, Saudi Arabia, who promoted the purification of tawhid and the rejection of religious practices considered bid'ah, khurafat, and shirk. With the political support of the Saud family, this movement developed into the official ideology of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and then spread to various countries, including Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative method based on literature review, with a historical and theological approach. The results show that Wahhabism has two main sides: first, a positive side that fosters awareness among the people to purify the teachings of tawhid; and second, a negative side in the form of exclusivism and takfiri tendencies that have the potential to disrupt socio-religious harmony. In Indonesia, the spread of this ideology is facilitated by Saudi Arabian educational and da'wah networks such as LIPIA and DDII. This study emphasises the need for a critical and contextual approach to the Wahhabi movement in order to prevent intra-religious conflict, as well as encouraging the strengthening of moderate Islam as the guardian of diversity and national unity.

Abstract

The book Sufism and Diversity in the Archipelago by Prof. Dr. H. Syamsun Ni'am, M.Ag, reviewed in this paper, offers a new perspective on the relationship between Sufism and diversity, pluralism, and nationalism in Indonesia. Through historical and sociological studies, the author traces the thoughts and practices of Sufi figures in the archipelago, from Walisongo, KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, KH. Achmad Siddiq, to KH. Abdurrahman Wahid. They present Sufism not merely as an individual practice, but as a social energy that gives birth to tolerance, moderation, and love for the homeland. This book emphasises that Sufi values are in line with the principles of Pancasila and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, thus serving as an epistemological basis for nation-building amid the threats of radicalism, identity polarisation, and national crisis. The uniqueness of this work lies in its success in linking classical Sufi teachings with the contemporary Indonesian context, while also showing that pluralism is not just discourse, but a real practice in national life. With its in-depth and systematic analysis, this book makes an important contribution to the study of Sufism, religious social sciences, and the discourse of pluralism, and is relevant as an academic and practical reference for maintaining national harmony in the modern era.

Abstract

Abstract

This research stems from concerns about the deeply rooted dichotomy of knowledge within the Indonesian education system, where religious and general knowledge are often positioned separately, even in opposition to each other. This situation not only creates epistemological divisions but also weakens the nation's competitiveness in facing global challenges. This study offers a reconstruction model for scientific integration based on Qur'anic epistemology as an alternative that can present a more holistic, ethical, and relevant approach to the needs of the times. Using qualitative research methods based on literature reviews, this study critically examines the relationship between revelation, reason, and empirical experience, and places it within the context of the dynamics of contemporary Indonesian education and development. The results of the study indicate that Qur'anic epistemology has great potential to become a foundation for scientific integration, because it affirms the unity of knowledge sources, connects the transcendental dimension with empirical reality, and offers an ethical orientation for scientific development. This integration model encompasses epistemological, curricular, and institutional dimensions that together form a new scientific paradigm.

Abstract

Hadith occupies a central position in the normative structure of Islam as the second source of law after the Qur’an and the historical medium for transmitting the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). However, the humanistic nature of hadith narration makes the problem of authenticity an unavoidable epistemological issue. This article aims to analyze hadith criticism in Islam as a historical and scientific process that develops from personal belief to systematic methodological standards. This research uses a library study method with a historical-epistemological approach to classical and contemporary literature on hadith science. The results of the study indicate that hadith criticism has been present since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through direct verification mechanisms, developed during the era of the Companions and Tabi’in through the affirmation of the importance of sanad (chain of transmission), and reached methodological maturity in the codification and post-codification periods through the disciplines of rijāl, jarḥ wa ta’dīl, and musthalaḥ al-ḥadīth. In the medieval period, hadith criticism functioned as a means of preserving and perfecting the scientific heritage through the traditions of shari’ah and takhrij. Meanwhile, in the modern era, hadith criticism has been adaptive and dialogical in responding to the challenges of Orientalism and the Qur’anic scripturalism movement. This article asserts that hadith criticism is not a rejection of the Sunnah, but rather a foundation of scientific rationality that safeguards the Prophet’s authority from historical distortion and ensures its relevance throughout the ages.

Abstract

This article discusses the cosmos as a divine text by reconstructing the epistemology of Qur'anic interpretation in light of modern astrophysics. This approach emphasizes the integration of revelation, empirical observation, and philosophical reflection in understanding the phenomena of the universe. By examining Qur'anic cosmological verses hermeneutically and linking them to contemporary astrophysical discoveries, such as stellar evolution, black holes, cosmic background radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. The method used is qualitative with a philosophical hermeneutic approach model, where the primary sources are cosmological verses such as (Q.S. Ali 'Imran: 190), (Q.S. Yasin: 40), (Q.S. al-Dzariyat: 47), (Q.S. al-Anbiya’: 30), (Q.S. al-Qamar: 49), (Q.S. al-Hadid: 4), to (Q.S. al-Furqan: 59). The secondary sources are journals, books, or other relevant research. After the data is collected, a comparative thematic content analysis is conducted using a triangulation model to ensure data validity, and conclusions are drawn.  The study's results indicate that revelation and science complement each other in building a holistic, transdisciplinary, and relevant understanding of modern science. The proposed Integrative Cosmological Interpretation Model combines the bayani (textual), burhani (rational-empirical), and irfani (spiritual-intuitive) approaches, so that Qur'anic interpretation is not only descriptive, but also prescriptive, philosophical, and ethical. The epistemic and philosophical implications of this research open new perspectives in Qur'anic studies, strengthen the dialogue between science and revelation, and emphasize the cosmos as a medium for human intellectual and spiritual reflection.

Abstract

This article examines the Islamic legal response to the recurring phenomenon of flash floods in Aceh and Sumatra by comparing the views of Tarjih Muhammadiyah, Bahtsul Masail Nahdlatul Ulama, and the Indonesian Ulema Council's Fatwa. Flash floods are understood not merely as natural events, but as ecological-social crises with legal, ethical, and public policy implications. This study uses a qualitative-normative approach, with doctrinal, comparative, and contextual analyses of the official documents of the three religious institutions, as well as empirical data on disasters in Aceh and Sumatra. The results of the study show that although they differ methodologically (Muhammadiyah with a maqāṣid approach based on scientific data, NU with social fiqh and contextual maslahat, and MUI with ijtihad jama‘i and national maslahat), all three have strong common ground on the principles of protection of life, ecological responsibility, and collective obligations in mitigation and post-disaster recovery. This article affirms that contemporary Islamic law has the epistemological flexibility to respond to ecological crises in an integrative manner and has the potential to become a transformative normative framework in disaster management based on environmental justice and public interest.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) occupy a strategic position in Indonesia's economic structure, yet the financing they obtain is frequently accompanied by considerable default risk, particularly within sharia microfinance institutions and sharia cooperatives that serve as the primary source of capital for lower- and middle-tier business actors. This condition calls for a risk mitigation instrument that is not only commercially effective but also compliant with sharia principles, given that conventional collection approaches often conflict with muamalah ethics. This paper aims to formulate a conceptual model of receivables transfer based on the hiwalah al-haq contract as an instrument for mitigating MSME default risk within sharia cooperatives. The method employed is qualitative, using a literature study approach that examines the foundations of fiqh muamalah, fatwas of the National Sharia Council-Indonesian Ulama Council (DSN-MUI), and contemporary practices of the hiwalah contract in sharia financial institutions. The findings indicate that hiwalah al-haq can be adapted into a model for transferring collection rights from MSMEs facing payment difficulties to sharia cooperatives acting as muhal 'alaih, which then carry out collection professionally in exchange for a fixed ujrah, thereby avoiding riba and gharar practices commonly found in conventional factoring schemes. This model simultaneously realizes maqashid al-sharia in the form of property protection (hifdz al-mal) without compromising the dignity of debtors experiencing hardship.

Abstract

This article explores the relevance of Surah Al-An'ām verses 151-153 (Makkiyyah) and Surah Al-Baqarah verses 261-267 (Madaniyyah) in the context of character education using library research methods. Through literature analysis, this study identifies the ethical and moral values contained in both surahs and how these values can be integrated into the character education curriculum. Surah Al-An'ām emphasizes the importance of morals, justice, and social responsibility, while Surah Al-Baqarah highlights the values of caring, solidarity, and wise management of resources. The results of the study indicate that the application of Qur'anic values in education can strengthen the character of individuals and communities, and contribute to the formation of a more ethical and responsible society. This research is expected to provide insights for educators in implementing these values in educational environments.

Abstract

Indonesia’s independence, proclaimed more than eight decades ago, has left behind a paradox: this nation is politically free, yet often remains enslaved in character. This study addresses this concern by reconstructing the meaning of independence through two key concepts in the Qur’an - hurriyah (responsible individual freedom) and istiqlal (collective independence of a nation) - as understood within the Nusantara exegetical tradition. Using a literature review method with a thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu’i) approach and content analysis, this study examines exegetical works such as Al-Azhar, Al-Mishbah, and Tarjuman Al-Mustafid to identify the common thread between these two concepts. The results indicate that hurriyah and istiqlal are not two separate discourses but rather two complementary aspects: an individual’s inner freedom serves as a prerequisite for the emergence of collective self-reliance, while a nation’s sovereignty stands only on the foundation of citizens who are morally free. These findings are linked to the five core values of Character Education Enhancement (religious, nationalistic, independent, cooperative, and integrity), whose theological roots can be traced back to the framework of hurriyah and istiqlal. The contribution of this article is to offer a conceptual framework that bridges classical exegesis with contemporary character education policies. This study concludes that the nation’s character education will be more deeply rooted and meaningful if it is rediscovered through the lens of Nusantara exegesis, rather than being formulated solely from a national philosophical framework.
