Abstract

The massive flow of socio-cultural globalization today poses a challenge of cultural homogenization, which has the potential to cause deculturalization and an identity crisis in society. However, socio-cultural globalization also presents benefits that can support the preservation and optimization of local wisdom. The purpose of this research is to analyze and describe socio-cultural globalization and its relevance to the Labuhan Merapi tradition as a multicultural educational space for society. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research method to identify and analyze various relevant literature on globalization, Labuhan Merapi, and multicultural education. Next, data analysis is carried out using the Klaus Krippendorff analysis model, and its credibility is strengthened through source triangulation. The results of the research indicate that socio-cultural globalization has encouraged the "kraton" to collaborate with local society in making the Labuhan Merapi tradition a multicultural educational space characterized by two key aspects. First, the Labuhan Merapi procession is reinterpreted as a space for the actualization of tolerance and "cooperation" that symbolizes vertical-horizontal harmony. Second, the Labuhan Merapi procession emphasizes functionality as a tourism commodity that introduces local cultural identity and its role in multicultural education for the wider society. From here, socio-cultural globalization can provide advantages in helping to overcome the challenges of cultural homogenization as long as its potential is utilized appropriately.

Abstract

Radicalism remains a threat in Indonesia, where extreme views are rooted in a misguided understanding of diversity. History lessons at State Senior High School 9 in Yogyakarta adopt a multicultural education approach to promote understanding of diversity by introducing local Javanese traditions, such as selametan, through an inclusive model. This study explores how history education at State Senior High School 9 in Yogyakarta integrates the material taught with multicultural values to promote tolerance and inclusiveness. This study uses a qualitative case study method at SMA Negeri 9 Yogyakarta, with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, involving several subjects, including the Deputy Principal for Curriculum, Deputy Principal for Facilities and Infrastructure, history teachers, and representatives of 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 9 Yogyakarta. Data validity and reliability were obtained through data triangulation techniques and analyzed using an interactive model. The research findings show that integrating history material with the local Javanese tradition of selametan is an effective way to foster tolerance and cooperation among students from diverse backgrounds. This strategy involves a collaborative Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model, demonstration methods, and class discussions to provide an understanding of diverse perspectives and encourage students to get used to living side by side. In this context, a school culture that accommodates student diversity also plays a crucial role in creating an inclusive and fair learning environment.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the practice of capitalism in the production system and labor relations in Lampung tobacco plantations during the liberal economy period. This research uses a historical method. The results show that tobacco plantations in Lampung flourished during the liberal economy period. The government opened opportunities for the private sector to invest in Lampung tobacco plantations. This is evidenced by the trials conducted on the cultivation of Deli and Manila tobacco varieties. The production system and labor relations in Lampung's tobacco plantations during the liberal economy period reflect the existence of capitalist practices. A capitalist class emerged, consisting of private companies, and a working class from the local community. The production system was controlled by private companies, which controlled all means of production and profits. Farmers obtained capital loans, tobacco seeds, fertilizers, and guidance. Then, the tobacco harvest would be purchased by companies with an advance payment system, creating a pattern that benefited companies and harmed farmers because they had no control over the harvest. This widened the social stratification gap that separated capital owners, the Dutch government, and farmers, and seemed to create shared poverty in society.

Abstract

A history curriculum dominated by a single narrative tends to ignore the importance of source analysis, context, and causal relationships in history. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the socio-drama method as a representation of a transformative approach to training historical thinking skills. This study uses a qualitative approach with a single case study design at SMA Negeri 6 Yogyakarta. The subjects of this study were the 11th grade history teacher and 6 11th grade students. Data collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, document studies, and enriched literature studies were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. This study produced three important findings, including: (1) The socio-drama model was implemented through three main stages, namely the pre-conception stage, collaborative inquiry, and socio-drama staging stage. To ensure collaboration, there was a division of roles in the form of scriptwriter, narrator, actor, and director adjusted to the characteristics of the students; and (2) Students' perspectives on history changed from rote learning to meaning making; and (3) Implications for historical thinking skills were demonstrated through chronological thinking skills, historical understanding, analysis and interpretation, and historical research skills. The contribution of this research can be a reference for history teachers to develop a transformative approach in history learning, especially training historical thinking skills in order to improve the quality of learning.
