Abstract

The integration of cultural context in mathematics teaching materials is a form of implementing ethnomathematics-based teaching. It is an effort of making mathematics learning easier and meaningful. This paper reports the effect of an ethnomathematics teaching material on students’ understanding of linear equations at the Department of Primary Education Universitas Syiah Kuala. 105 students participated in the study. Students’ understanding was assessed using a test. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. Students’ understanding of linear equation was analyzed based on 3 aspects of solving linear equation problems: correctly translate word problems into linear equation, perform calculation correctly, and give correct final answer. Results showed that more than 83% of the students could answer the test satisfactorily. Therefore, it is concluded that the implementation of the ethnomathematics teaching material helps students understand linear equation. This finding implies that the implementation of ethnomathematics teaching material is beneficial for mathematics learning.

Abstract

This classroom action research was motivated by low student learning outcomes in "My Indonesian Cultural Diversity" due to teacher-centered, unvaried learning that lacked integration with students' real experiences. This study aims to determine the increase in teacher activity, student activity, and learning outcomes using the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach. Employing a qualitative approach with the Kemmis and McTaggart Classroom Action Research (PTK) model, this study was conducted in two cycles. The subjects were 20 class VB students at SD Negeri 2 Mata Ie (12 female, 8 male). Data were collected via observations and learning tests, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results show that the CRT approach significantly improved all parameters. Teacher activity scores rose from 91 in cycle I to a perfect 100 in cycle II, maintaining a "very good" category. Student activity also increased substantially from 76 in cycle I to 96.2 in cycle II, matching the "very good" category. Furthermore, student learning outcomes enhanced remarkably; the class average increased from 75.2 with 70% classical completeness in cycle I to 89 with 100% classical completeness in cycle II. This progress occurs because learning is directly linked to cultural experiences and traditions close to students' daily lives, making the process more meaningful, active, and enjoyable. In conclusion, the application of the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach is highly effective in increasing teacher activity, student activity, and student learning outcomes in class V of SD Negeri 2 Mata Ie. Keywords: Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT), learning outcomes, Indonesian cultural diversity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of collaboration skills among fifth-grade students in Science and Social Studies (IPAS) learning at SD Negeri 2 Mata Ie. The study aimed to describe the implementation of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model and students' collaboration skills during the learning process. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The participants consisted of one fifth-grade teacher and 20 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations and structured interviews with the teacher. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model was carried out through five stages, namely class presentation, team study, games, tournaments, and team recognition. The implementation of these stages encouraged students to participate actively in group activities and facilitated the development of collaboration skills. Students' collaboration skills were categorized as good to very good. The indicators of mutual respect (3.35) and responsibility (3.30) were categorized as very good, while active contribution (3.20), productive work (3.20), and flexibility and compromise (3.15) were categorized as good. Therefore, the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model can support the development of collaboration skills in IPAS learning.
