Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using the Wayground digital quiz platform in teaching Japanese vocabulary in the Kaiwa course for students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. This study used a mixed-methods approach. The subjects were 32 second-semester students in the 2024-2025 academic year. Data collection was conducted through interviews, documentation, and objective tests. The results showed that the use of the Wayground digital platform increased learning motivation and material comprehension, with the success rate reaching 81% for the class. Out of 32 students, 7 students achieved a score of 100%, 6 students achieved 96%, 7 students achieved 76%, 5 students achieved 72%, 4 students achieved 68%, 1 student achieved 60%, and the lowest scores of 50% and 38% were achieved by 1 student each. The analysis shows that there is an increase in the accuracy of vocabulary mastery after using Wayground. However, some students require additional support due to limited digital literacy, technical issues, and connectivity constraints. This study highlights the importance of integrating technology with hands-on guidance to improve students' learning motivation and vocabulary acquisition, which in turn will improve their Japanese speaking ability.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intertextual relationship between the novels Jepun Negerinya Hiroko and Kuantar ke Gerbang, including comparisons of the main male characters, themes, plots, meanings, and points of view in both novels. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an intertextual approach. Data were collected through library techniques and validated using theoretical and data triangulation. Analysis results reveal that both novels share similarities and differences in their structural elements. The similarities include the selfish attitude of the main male characters, themes addressing social problems encompassing human life in macro and micro aspects that influence marital relationships, point of view using first-person singular style where in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko the narrator participates as a character in the story, while in Kuantar ke Gerbang the narrator exists outside the story but understands the characters' feelings, and an overall meaning of unity among people. In Jepun Negerinya Hiroko, universalism is emphasized to unite different ethnic groups through the slogan promoting freedom, brotherhood, and equality, whereas Kuantar ke Gerbang highlights nationalism through youth unity. The differences between the two novels include the main male character being introverted in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko and extroverted in Kuantar ke Gerbang, the role of the main male character as antagonist versus protagonist, the central theme concerning mixed marriage between different cultural and national backgrounds compared to the spirit of national independence struggle, and the use of flashback plot positioned at the end of the story in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko.
