Abstract

One of the main challenges in PV system deployment is the increase in panel operating temperature, which leads to a reduction in energy conversion efficiency, particularly in tropical regions with high solar irradiance. Potential solution to mitigate this issue is the partially submerged photovoltaic (PSPV) system. This study aims to analyze the influence of convective heat transfer coefficients on the surface of a PSPV system on the operating temperature of photovoltaic panels using a numerical modeling approach. The research methodology involves the development of an energy balance model that accounts for the contributions of solar radiation, convective heat transfer, and thermal radiation. The panel area is divided into two equal sections with a 50:50 ratio, consisting of a submerged portion and an air-exposed portion. The convective heat transfer coefficients for the submerged section are set to 100 W/m²K for both the upper and lower surfaces. For the air-exposed section, the upper surface convective heat transfer coefficient is varied between 10 and 70 W/m²K, while the lower surface coefficient is maintained at 10 W/m²K. Simulation results indicate that the presence of water as a cooling medium significantly reduces the panel operating temperature to approximately 31 °C, compared to a fully air-exposed panel configuration, which reaches an operating temperature up to around 55 °C.

Abstract

Currently, there are individuals around us living with disabilities caused by accidents or other factors. People with disabilities generally require assistance from others, particularly for mobility or moving from one place to another. Although manual wheelchairs can provide a solution for mobility, they remain challenging to operate using hand power alone and often require external help for movement. To facilitate mobility for individuals with disabilities, especially wheelchair users, an electric drive system in the form of an electric motor is proposed as a solution. The development of a motorized electric wheelchair aims to enhance the mobility of individuals with physical disabilities. Members of the Indonesian Association of Persons with Disabilities (PPID) were selected as community service partners for this initiative. It is hoped that, in addition to supporting mobility, the electric wheelchair can also serve as a body support system, enabling users to continue engaging in productive activities while seated.  The implementation of this program began with interviews conducted with persons with disabilities and related partners to understand their needs, followed by the design, fabrication, and subsequent socialization and training on the use of the electric wheelchair for the target beneficiaries. The outcome of this effort is an electric wheelchair equipped with joystick controls. The wheelchair employs a rear-wheel drive system powered by two motors, each attached to a rear wheel, and a chain transmission system. Along with delivering the electric wheelchair to the PPID, this initiative aims to serve as a practical application of mechanical engineering knowledge, directly benefiting the community..

Abstract

Vocational high school (SMK) students represent a level of vocational secondary education expected to fulfill the demand for technical labor at specific levels within the industry. However, current SMK graduates face challenges due to intense competition in securing employment. This community service initiative aims to enhance the skills of SMK students by focusing on the utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the preparation of post-graduation documents. A case study was conducted at a private vocational high school (SMKS) in and state vocational high school (SMKN) in Tanah Bumbu Regency as an effort to prepare students to face the challenges of Industry 4.0. Through outreach activities, this initiative introduced the concept of community service and the benefits of ICT in document preparation. The methods employed aimed to achieve outcomes such as improving students' skills, applying ICT in preparing supporting documents for job applications, and enhancing students' competitiveness in the labor market. The results of the activities carried out showed an increase in participants' knowledge of curriculum vitae and job application letters. Survey results also indicated that the seminar was highly beneficial for participants in this community service activity through technical outreach.

Abstract

Abstrak      Pengelolaan sampah organik di Bank Sampah Wonorejo Prona 3 Balikpapan menghadapi kendala dalam efisiensi dan nilai tambah. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan teknologi komposting guna mempercepat proses penguraian sampah organik dan meningkatkan nilai ekonominya. Metode yang digunakan meliputi penyuluhan, pelatihan, demonstrasi alat komposter sederhana, serta pendampingan langsung dalam pembuatan kompos. Pada akhir kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman pengelola dan masyarakat mengenai teknik pengomposan yang efektif dengan penggunaan digester aerobik, teknik penyusunan berlapis dan penghalusan.  Dampak yang diperoleh adalah masyarakat mampu pengolahan sampah organik dengan waktu lebih singkat, mengurangi bau yang tidak sedap selama proses komposting, memproduksi pupuk padat dan cair bernilai ekonomi. Kegiatan berpotensi  pengembangan skala produksi dan kolaborasi dengan pemangku kepentingan dalam keberlanjutan program. Kata kunci: aerobik; bank sampah; komposting; kota balikpapan; sampah organik. Abstract      The management of organic waste at the Wonorejo Prona 3 Waste Bank in Balikpapan faces challenges related to efficiency and value addition. This community service activity aimed to introduce composting technology to accelerate the decomposition process of organic waste and enhance its economic value. The methods employed included counseling, training, demonstration of simple composter devices, and direct assistance in compost production. The results indicated an improvement in the understanding of waste bank managers and the local community regarding effective composting techniques using aerobic digesters, layered arrangement methods, and size reduction. The outcomes achieved include the community’s ability to process organic waste in a shorter time, reduced unpleasant odors during the composting process, and the production of economically valuable solid and liquid fertilizers. This activity holds potential for scaling up production and fostering collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the program. Keywords: aerobic; garbage bank community; composting; balikpapan city; biodegradable waste.

Abstract

Pelepah kelapa sawit merupakan limbah lignoselulosa yang potensial sebagai bahan baku serat alam untuk berbagai aplikasi industri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis komposisi kimia serat pelepah kelapa sawit, meliputi kadar Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), hemiselulosa, selulosa, dan lignin menggunakan metode Van Soest, serta mengidentifikasi struktur kristalinitasnya menggunakan X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Serat pelepah sawit diekstraksi secara mekanik, kemudian dikeringkan dan dihaluskan. Analisis Van Soest dilakukan secara bertahap menggunakan larutan neutral detergent dan acid detergent. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa serat pelepah sawit mengandung Dari hasil penelitian dapat diketahui bahwa serat pelepah kelapa sawit mempunyai kandungan tertinggi pada serat variasi N5H dengan selulosa 78,63%, Lignin 9,12 % dan hemiselulosa 12,25 %. Analisis XRD pada sudut 2θ menunjukkan puncak difraksi bahwa serat pelepah sawit memiliki struktur yang dominan amorf dengan nilai kristalinitas 63,02%. Morfologi pada permukaan serat pelepah kelapa sawit diamati serat terlihat lebih bersih akibat perlakuan 10% NaOH dan H2O2. Berdasarkan hasil uji van soest dan analisis XRD menunjukkan bahwa setelah dilakukan perlakuan penelitian ini memberikan data dasar yang penting untuk pengembangan serat pelepah sawit sebagai penguat material komposit yang ramah lingkungan.

Abstract

Forage grass is the main feed for ruminant livestock such as cattle and goats. However, the chopping process is still mostly done manually using a sickle, which is inefficient and requires considerable time and energy. This research aims to design and fabricate a simple grass chopper machine powered by an electric motor that is economical, compact, and easy to operate by small-scale farmers. The methods used include component design using 3D software, mechanical calculations (transmission, force, power, torque, shaft diameter), fabrication of the tool, and load simulation analysis using simulation software. The results showed that the machine uses an electric motor with a blade rotational speed of 835.71 rpm, driving force of 9.81 N, and power of 60.07 W. The motor side shaft diameter is 8 mm, while the blade side shaft is 10 mm. Simulation results indicated a maximum stress of 13,670 N/m², which is far below the yield strength of ironwood (ulin wood) at 55.64 MPa, resulting in a safety factor of 4068.9, indicating that the structure is safe. The maximum displacement is 0.00321 mm and maximum strain is 2.99 x 10⁻⁶, showing very small deformation, thus the structure is stiff and stable. The total fabrication cost of the tool is IDR 634,000. This grass chopper machine is deemed feasible for use and can improve the work efficiency of small-scale farmers.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pentingnya pengendalian kekasaran permukaan dalam proses permesinan CNC, karena kualitas permukaan yang baik sangat berpengaruh terhadap kinerja, umur pakai, dan keandalan komponen, khususnya pada material baja AISI 4140 yang широко digunakan dalam industri manufaktur presisi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh kecepatan spindel, laju umpan, dan kedalaman pemotongan terhadap kekasaran permukaan baja AISI 4140 selama proses permesinan CNC. Metode Taguchi dengan susunan ortogonal L16(4³) digunakan untuk mengoptimalkan parameter pemesinan secara efisien, sedangkan Analisis Varians (ANOVA) digunakan untuk menentukan signifikansi statistik dari setiap faktor. Percobaan dilakukan menggunakan mesin CNC milling (SUPERMILL MK 2.0) dengan mata pisau endmill karbida dan emulsi pendingin. Kekasaran permukaan (Ra) diukur untuk setiap enam belas kombinasi parameter. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa laju umpan merupakan faktor yang paling dominan yang memengaruhi kekasaran permukaan, diikuti oleh kedalaman pemotongan dan kecepatan spindel. Hasil ANOVA menunjukkan bahwa laju umpan memiliki nilai F tertinggi (326,87) dan nilai P 0,000, yang menunjukkan pengaruh yang sangat signifikan. Parameter pemesinan optimal untuk mencapai kekasaran permukaan terendah adalah kecepatan spindel 7000 rpm, laju umpan 50 mm/menit, dan kedalaman pemotongan 0,25 mm, menghasilkan Ra minimum 0,284 µm. Analisis regresi mengkonfirmasi bahwa kekasaran permukaan menurun dengan meningkatnya kecepatan spindel tetapi meningkat dengan laju umpan dan kedalaman pemotongan yang lebih tinggi, dengan deviasi kurang dari 5% antara nilai eksperimental dan nilai prediksi. Secara keseluruhan, analisis Taguchi dan ANOVA berhasil mengidentifikasi kombinasi parameter optimal untuk meminimalkan kekasaran permukaan dalam CNC milling baja AISI 4140, memberikan data referensi yang berharga untuk optimasi proses dalam manufaktur presisi.
