Abstract

Heart disease and stroke are more likely to occur in people with high cholesterol. Hypercholesterolemia is the cause of one-third of ischemic heart disease worldwide. One of the plants cultivated by communities for traditional medicine is Eleutherine bulbosa, which is used to treat cardiovascular conditions. E. bulbosa has antioxidants, which can lower cholesterol levels by competitively inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, thereby reducing cholesterol formation in the liver. E. bulbosa also contains flavonoids, whose role in lowering hypercholesterolemia is by reducing HMG-CoA reductase activity and increasing lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) activity, which accelerates the reaction of cholesterol ester formation from free cholesterol in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) molecules during the process of cholesterol uptake from cells or tissues, and decreases liver HMG-CoA reductase enzyme levels. This study aimed to examine the effects of administering the ethyl acetate fraction of E. bulbosa and test its ability to reduce total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, and triglycerides, while increasing HDL. The test animals were fed a high-fat diet for 22 days to increase their cholesterol levels. A Dumolab DC20 photometer was used to measure cholesterol levels. Histopathological examination of the aorta was performed using paraffin blocks and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The preparations were observed under a microscope (magnification of 100x and 400x). Observations included the diameter of the aorta. The results showed that the treatment groups differed significantly (P < 0.05). According to Duncan's test, there was a difference in reduction, in the hypercholesterolemia + extract group, the decrease in cholesterol levels was lower compared to the hypercholesterolemia + simvastatin group. The most effective dose group was 400 mg/kgBW, which was close to the results of the hypercholesterolemia + simvastatin group. Administration of the ethyl acetate fraction of E. bulbosa can normalize cholesterol levels. Also, histopathological results showed that the diameter of the aorta was larger after administration of 400 mg/kgBW of E. bulbosa extract compared to the hypercholesterolemia group.

Abstract

Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease that often occurs in Indonesia. This is a health problem with a high prevalence, which is 25.8%, according to the 2013 Riskesdas data. People with hypertension also often experience complications with other cardiovascular diseases such as hypercholesterolemia. Beta-blockers are commonly used by people to treat high blood pressure and an excessive heart rate. Experiments on the pharmacological effect of bisoprolol on reducing blood pressure in hypertensive conditions have been carried out by several previous researchers, both preclinically and clinically, but the effect of pathological hypercholesterolemia on the effect of decreasing mean arterial pressure and heart rate has not been established. Therefore, researchers are interested in investigating the effect of decreasing mean arterial pressure and heart rate in hypertensive and hypertensive rats with comorbid hypercholesterolemia. So researchers are interested in conducting research on the effect of bisoprolol on decreasing mean arterial pressure and heart rate in hypertensive male white rats and hypertension complicating hypercholesterolemia in male white rats. In this study, all experimental animals were hypertensive first, then the group with complications of hypercholesterolemia was induced by PTU and high fat diet, then measured using a photometer v5¬+ 5010. Meanwhile, the mean arterial pressure and heart rate were measured using a blood pressure gauge adinstrument NIBP ( Non invasive blood pressure) brand CODA (kent scientific). The data from this study were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. It was found that the administration of bisoprolol with doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg significantly decreased mean arterial pressure and heart rate (p 0.05). And the 10 mg dose was the most effective in reducing the mean arterial pressure and heart rate in hypertensive male white rats and hypertension complicating hypercholesterolemia. And there is a difference in the decrease in mean arterial pressure and heart rate in male white rats with hypertension, the decrease is greater than in male white rats with hypertension complicated by hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires long-term therapy. The prevalence of hypertension continues to increase every year, but patient knowledge of treatment is still low. Better knowledge will increase patient compliance in treatment so that blood pressure is better controlled and the risk of complications is avoided. This study aims to determine the effect of booklets on the knowledge of hypertensive prolanis patients at the Rasimah Ahmad Health Center, Bukittinggi City. The type of research used was an experimental pretest – posttest control group design with 40 respondents who were randomly divided into two groups (control and intervention). The intervention medium used in this study was a booklet. The instrument used was the HK-LS questionnaire to assess knowledge. The results of the study showed an increase in the compliance of hypertensive patients. The statistical analysis used was the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, to determine the effect of the intervention on the patient's level of knowledge. From the results of the study, it showed that giving booklets obtained a significant value (p-value = 0.000), so it could be concluded that giving booklets had an effect on increasing the knowledge of hypertensive prolanis patients at the Rasimah Ahmad Health Center, Bukittinggi City.

Abstract

Hypertension is a condition in which the systolic blood pressure is above 140 mmHg and the diastolic blood pressure is above 90 mmHg. Kidney failure is a progressive, irreversible disorder of renal function, in which kidney function declines in maintaining metabolism, fluid, and electrolyte balance, resulting in uremia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract of papaya leaves (Carica papaya L) in reducing blood pressure and serum creatinine levels in male white rats. This study was experimental in nature, using 60 rats divided into 12 groups, namely negative control, positive control, comparison group (captopril), and dose groups (100, 200, 400 mg/kg body weight). The inducer used for hypertension was 8% NaCl and the inducer for kidney failure was CCl4. Blood pressure measurements were carried out using a Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP) device, and the measurement of serum creatinine levels was performed using a photometer. Data analysis was conducted using One Way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test. The results showed that the administration of papaya leaf ethanol extract significantly affected the reduction of blood pressure and serum creatinine levels (p<0.05). It can be concluded that the most effective dose for lowering blood pressure is 400 mg/kg body weight, and the most effective dose for reducing serum creatinine levels is 100 mg/kg body weight.
