Abstract

Background: Eyes are one of the most important sense organs in human life. Eyes can help humans in activities and get information visually. Disorders of the eye will hinder and make it difficult for humans to carry out daily activities and reduce the quality of life. The cornea is one of the most important parts of the eye. Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) is the middle part of the cornea. CCT examination is a routine examination that must be carried out, but there are still many who have not carried out routine CCT examinations. Patients with thick CCTs may cause the IOP readings to appear higher than the actual condition, and conversely, patients with thinner CCTs may give the interpretations the impressions that they are lower than the actual condition. Data related to CCT and IOP in Indonesia is still lacking, especially in Surabaya, so a search for research on age, CCT and IOP needs to be done. Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe data on age, CCT and IOP in patients aged 20 to 70 years in the outpatient polyclinic of Ophthalmology, PHC Hospital Surabaya. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional research design. The sampling method used is total sampling.Result: In this study, CCT was examined using a Canon TX-20P measuring instrument and examined on both eyes. The average CCT examination results in the 20-30 age group was 537.67 ± 28.16 μm and the 31-40 age group 544.89 ± 29.28 μm. In the age group 20-30 and 31-40 years, the CCT increased by 7.22 μm, however in the 41-50 age group, the average CCT was 540.09 ± 30.44 μm, which showed a decrease of 4.80 μm compared to 31-40 age group. In the 51-60 age group, the results were 553.35 ± 28.60 μm which showed an increase in CCT compared to the 41-50 age group and the 61-70 age group got the results of 550.35 ± 30.47 μm showing a decrease of 3.00 m compared to the 51-60 age group. IOP in the 20-30 age group obtained results of 16.25 ± 2.93 mmHg, this value is lower than the 31-40 age group. In the age group 31-70 years, the results of IOP decreased over time. Conclusion: Descriptive data obtained regarding age, CCT and IOP that can be used as baseline data or comparison in eye examinations.Keyword: Central Corneal Thickness, Intraocular Pressure, Eyes, Age, Cornea.

Abstract

The various infection routes of Toxoplasma gondii that are close to daily life strongly support the incidence of toxoplasmosis. The emergence of drug-resistant Toxoplasma gondii strains raises future concerns. Moringa leaf ethanol extract has been shown to have several anti-pathogen activities, which could have an anti-Toxoplasma effect. This research was conducted to analyze the anti-Toxoplasma effect of moringa leaf ethanol extract against tachyzoites replication in Toxoplasma gondii and the correlation between extract doses with the number of tachyzoites. Mice were divided into five groups. The negative control group (Group I) received CMC-Na solution. The positive control group (Group II) received spiramycin 100 mg/kg BW. The treatment groups received moringa leaf ethanol extract 250 mg/kg BW (group III), 500 mg/kg BW (group IV), and 1000 mg/kg BW (group V), respectively. Mice were injected with 1 x 105 tachyzoites/0.1 mL/mice intraperitoneally on the first day. Moringa leaf ethanol extract and spiramycin were given orally once daily for three days. The number of tachyzoites in the intraperitoneal fluid was calculated on the fifth day. The results have shown that there were significantly lower differences (P < 0.05) in group IV (P = 0.021) and group V (P = 0.022) compared to group I. There was also a significant negative correlation between the extract doses and the number of tachyzoites (P = 0.000; r = -0.781). Moringa oleifera leaf ethanol extract has an anti-Toxoplasma effect by inhibiting the tachyzoite replication at     500 mg/kg BW and 1000 mg/kg BW.

Abstract

Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is an acute infection that affects the nose, paranasal sinuses, tonsils, pharynx, and larynx. It is commonly found in children under the age of 5. One of the most frequent and concerning complications of URTI in children is acute otitis media (AOM), a middle ear infection that can negatively impact a child’s health. Understanding the relationship between URTI and AOM is important to enable early prevention and treatment. This study aims to examine the effect of URTI on the incidence of AOM in children aged 0–5 years at the ENT Polyclinic of PHC Hospital Surabaya. This research employs an observational analytic design using a cross-sectional method with non-probability purposive sampling. Data were collected from medical records of pediatric patients aged 0–5 years who visited the ENT Polyclinic between January and December 2022. The data were analyzed using the contingency coefficient test, and a result was considered statistically significant if p < 0.05. Out of 45 patients who met the study criteria, the average age was 2.82 years. There were more males (62%) than females (38%). A total of 19 children (42%) had both URTI and AOM, 6 children (13%) had AOM without URTI, and 20 children (44%) had URTI without AOM. The analysis showed a p-value of 0.019 and a contingency coefficient of 0.331, indicating a moderate association between URTI and AOM. URTI has a significant influence on the incidence of acute otitis media in children aged 0–5 years at the ENT Polyclinic of PHC Hospital Surabaya.
