Abstract

The use of Duolingo as a mobile-assisted language learning tool has gained prominence for enhancing vocabulary acquisition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Despite existing research on its short-term effectiveness, questions remain about its long-term impact and the cognitive mechanisms involved. This study investigates the role of Duolingo in improving vocabulary retention through a quantitative experimental design involving 60 EFL learners aged 16–22 years. Participants, selected through purposive sampling, engaged with Duolingo for at least one month. Data were analyzed using linear regression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis via SPSS to determine the tool’s efficacy. The findings reveal a statistically significant improvement in vocabulary retention, highlighting Duolingo's potential as a gamified, interactive, and accessible platform for self-paced learning. These results underscore its value in addressing gaps in traditional classroom methods, offering educators practical insights into integrating technology into curriculum design. This research contributes to the understanding of mobile-assisted tools, promoting their scalability for diverse educational context.

Abstract

Understanding language assessment literacy (LAL) is an important part of pre-service English teachers’ professional development. Although interest in language assessment has increased, studies focusing on pre-service teachers’ LAL in the Indonesian EFL context remain limited. A clearer understanding of how pre-service teachers view and interpret classroom assessment is therefore needed to support more effective assessment practices and improve language teaching and learning. This qualitative study explores Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers' perceived readiness for classroom assessment by examining how aspects of LAL are articulated through interview data. The study involved ten English education study program students who had completed the teaching practicum program in East Java, Indonesia. The findings indicate that, despite expressing confidence in their readiness to teach, the participants demonstrated limited and uneven understandings of key LAL components. The small number of participants and the specific institutional context limit the transferability of the findings. Nevertheless, this study suggests that closer attention to LAL within pre-service English teachers’ education may help support the development of more balanced assessments.

Abstract

The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation and appoints humankind as khalīfah (stewards) on earth. Although widely discussed, these values largely remain unoperationalized within applied ecological frameworks. Addressing this research gap, this study aims to explore and actualize Qur’anic values of environmental conservation through a thematic (mawd}ū’ī) exegesis approach. Using library research, the analysis identifies and interprets Qur’anic verses related to ecological ethics. The findings reveal three key dimensions of conservation values: protection, encompassing amānah (trust), human responsibility as khalīfah, and gratitude; preservation, which includes ecological justice, rah}mah (compassion), tawh}īd (divine oneness); and sustainable utilization, centered on the prohibition of isrāf (wastefulness) as a principle of balance. This study presents a novel synthesis between Qur’anic eco-ethics and Indonesia’s sustainable development discourse, a connection that has rarely been examined in previous thematic exegesis research. In the Indonesian context, the implementation of these values reflects initiatives such as eco-pesantren and eco-mosque movements, as well as environmentally conscious public policies aligned with local wisdom and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Thus, Qur’anic ecological ethics not only enrich Islamic scholarship but also contribute to building a just, sustainable, and spiritually grounded civilization.
