Abstract

Since becoming a translator needs certain skills and qualifications, this article provides detailed information on the process from starting and developing a career in translation. Based on accessible references and a limited interview with a professional translator, some recommendations are in place. A perspective translator has to go through the following procedures; (1) acquisition and development of language competence, (2) translation competence development, (3) translation market, and (4) career development. Being a successful translator, one should have known how to start, including how to tell people their existence and knowing their skills and abilities in translation; how they manage their personal and financial management, how they deal with customers, and what to do if things go wrong.

Abstract

There has been a change in the realm of education these days. Started with teachers as the center of learning back then, becoming students as the main key of learning, and this has led to an independent learning environment. Technology has been taking an important role of this change happening in the society, with no exception in the language education as well. Moreover, it is the fact that in English language, students are required to master four skills, namely speaking, listening, reading, and writing. There have been many ways of teaching those four skills to students, but unfortunately often those strategies do not meet students’ needs. Technology development, therefore, comes to provide new solutions to these issues that both teachers and students could grab the benefits of it. Thereupon in this paper, the authors try to provide insights as comprehensive as possible regarding with technology development, which is webpage, which can be used by teachers to assist the English teaching, especially in the sense of teaching reading and listening skills to students.

Abstract

The aim of translation is to transfer meaning from the source language to the target language. There are some methods that can be used in translating the text, one of them is faithful translation. Faithful translation method is a method that reproduces the exact contextual meaning of the original within the limits of the grammatical structures of the target language. This study focuses on analyzing faithful translation methods in the webtoon “I Love Yoo”. The objective of this study is to identify how the faithful translation method is applied in translating webtoon Ï Love Yoo”. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method and the data were taken from the 1st to 10th episode of webtoon “I Love Yoo”. The data collected were analyzed by reading both versions of the webcomic, classified each sentence according to the translation methods and explained why the sentences are included into each translation method. To analyze the data, this study used the theory translation method proposed by Newmark (1988). It is found that 8 translation methods were applied but faithful translation method is most frequently used because the translator translates cultural terms and maintains the degree of grammatical and lexical faithfully to the intentions and the text-realisation of the source language writer.

Abstract

The use of English preposition is a little bit confusing, especially for Indonesians. It is because Indonesia only has one preposition di- to indicate the English prepositions in, on, and at. In this research, it is found that the prepositions in, on, and at are used differently based on the relation between the object and the landmark. For preposition in, the concept of containment is introduced. This preposition is used when the object is surrounded by the landmark. For preposition on, the concept of contact and support is highlighted, and gravity takes part in the use of this preposition. It means that the object should be in contact with the landmark and the landmark should support the object so that it will not move or fall. Lastly, the preposition at requires us to portray an imaginary location to determine a certain point of the object. By using the correct preposition in, on, and at, one can have linguistic knowledge, and be able to avoid ambiguity to convey correct messages or ideas to the interlocutors.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning is one of the approaches of teaching English which supports the scientific approach of Curriculum 2013. This approach can bring some benefits to the students namely promoting the comprehensible input and output and gaining successful experiences with the real world, and also supporting learner centeredness during the learning process. However, the implementation of this approach still has some problems particularly in terms of appropriate kinds of project and the way to assess the students‟ progress and achievement. Therefore, this article proposes the projects and the assessment models for Senior High School Grade XI as an alternative to overcome the problems of the implementation of Project-Based Learning in Curriculum 2013.

Abstract

English is an international language that most people in the world use to communicate. Video or movie is one of the effective media to be used in a language classroom. In the English Language Education Study Program (ELESPA) of Sanata Dharma University, movies with English subtitles were used in a class as a learning media. This research aims to know how ELESP students perceive English subtitled movies as learning media. There are two research questions in this research: (1) What is the ELESP students perception on the use of English subtitled movie? (2) What are the effects of using English subtitled movie for ELESP students? The researcher used a survey as the method in this research. The participants for this research were the students from C class batch 2016. The instruments used by the researcher were questionnaire and interview. The results of this research showed that most of the respondents had a positive perception of the use of English subtitled movies.

Abstract

This paper aims to chart how literary work of non-Western origin is incorporated into World English Literature by giving example of two Chinese Classic Novels. Among the Chinese Classic Novels, Journey to the West is the novel that achieves wider popularity among West- ern scholars and canonized while other Chinese Classic Novels are not as popular especially among Western academia. The different reception is related also with how both novels are circulated, translated, and adapted from Chinese into English. The emphasis of this paper is to compare the issue of circulation, translation, and adaptation between Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms as another Chinese Classic Novel. By comparing differ- ent issues of how both novels enter the Western World, this paper hopes to have an insight regarding how these two novels have different popularity among academic scholars.

Abstract

Linguistics as a present study, acts as an instrument towards promoting local languages. This recent study aims at studying some of phonological processes in Chagga language (Particularly Kibosho and Marangu varieties). Chagga is a Bantu language family spoken by Chagga people of Tanzania, south of Mount Kilimanjaro. Borrowing is the act of taking a word or a phrase from one language and used it in another language. The present study is carried out under Generative CV Phonology Theory, developed by linguists, Keyser and Clements in (1983). This theory strives to guide the present study on scrutinize phonological processes with their rules in Kibosho and Marangu varieties. The very study is the phonological type of study which employs qualitative method. The study employs Interview to observe the pronunciation by native speakers, voice note as linguistic variable need for homogenous resemblance of the uttered lexical items and the phonological processes. To answer study question one the study observes there are three major causes of phonological processes in Chagga as in English with very little variations namely: Phonological processes motivated by syllable structure rules [vowel insertion/ epenthesis], Phonological processes in Chagga language affecting syllable [consonant deletion] and Phonological processes motivated by phonemic reasons [cluster tolerance, feature change]. In adhering problem two the study has found similar phonological processes between English and Chagga with very little differences especially on phonemes which undergo the changes hence advocates for further analyses in local African and Asian languages to pursue a similar study or any nearly phonological study in order to preserve and promote local linguistics contents from ones native language.Keywords: Phonological processes, Nativazation, Phonological rules, Chagga languageI

Abstract

Related to the implementation of the Curriculum 2013, project-based learning becomes one of the learning models that should be implemented in teaching and learning activities. Hence, outcome-based assessment and authentic assessment are considered appropriate model for project-based learning because they are based on activities that represent a real-life setting. The purpose of this article is to develop an alternative model of project-based assessments that are related to the implementation of the Curriculum 2013. This model is related to the basic competences and objective of the lesson unit. Designed from concepts of project-based learning, authentic assessmemnt and outcome-based assessment, this project-based assessment model can be one example of improvement of life quality in English language learning. It is hoped that the project-based assessment model will improve a better understanding of the needs of students because it offers students‘ opportunity to investigate and discover authentic topics of interest. Using this model of project-based assessment, students‘ engagement in learning process can be improved.

Abstract

This article intends to unfold Orhan Pamuk’s conception or how he (re) presents women and their headscarves within Islamic tradition, with particular reference to his novel Snow. Snow opens with the return of Ka, a Turkish exile who has been leaving his country for 12 years to Istanbul in order to attend his mother’s funeral. He then decides to investigate a wave of suicide by young girls in the provincial city of Kars who object the ban of hijab in public spaces. This study discovers that Pamuk explores the lamentation of the Muslim women emanating out of the domain of religion and the will of the state as a stepping-stone to re (claim) the meaning of their headscarf and identity. Grounded in Mahmood theory, this study argued that headscarf has a deeper meaning than just a symbol of religious devotion. It is a platform of Muslim women’s individual will to exercise their chosen identity.
