Abstract

To improve the quality of education outcomes, English teachers have to enhance their competence in assessing students learning. In fact, in Curriculum 2013, many Englishteachers find difficulties in assessing students learning. One of the reasons is lack ofknowledge about the model of assessment for Curriculum 2013. Therefore, in this article, analternative model of project-based assessment is proposed. The focus here is on the Englishwriting competence. This article actually concerns with a proposed model of assessment withpilot study data. The pilot study was conducted by adapting research and development (R D) procedure. The participants of the study were English teachers from Yogyakarta andgraduate students of English Language Studies, Sanata Dharma University. The techniqueused were questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were verbal andnumerical. The result of the pilot study shows that the model is good but needs someimprovement. It also reveals some principles in developing the effective project-basedassessment model: practical, holistic, systematic, systemic, relevant, authentic, andmeaningful. In addition, the project-based instrument should have: clear objectives, clearscoring criteria, clear instruction, clear items and feedback.Keywords: alternative model, project-based assessment, writing competence

Abstract

A creole is a pidgin that has attained the first generation of the speaker. The formation of a creole might be influenced by several factors and the two of them are code-switching and the influence of a dominant language. In relation to the two factors, there is a creole that might fit the situation. The creole is the Tetun-Portu language and the creole is presumably invented from the combination between the Tetun-Terik language and the Portuguese language. The backbone of the language might be adopted from the Tetun-Terik language but the codes have been dominated by the Portuguese language. The invention of the creole might be related to the Portuguese occupation in the Timor Island several centuries ago. Due to the interesting characteristics, the researcher would like to investigate the creole further. In conducting the study, the focus will be on how the code-switching influence the invention of the creole and the Portuguese influence within the invention of the creole itself. The findings of the study confirm that the Tetun-Portu language might be considered as a creole because it has completely different structures and it has adopted more codes from the Portuguese language.Keywords: Creole, Tetun-Terik, Tetun-Portu, code-switching, Portuguese influence

Abstract

Over years, translators have been incorporating new advances in technology into their work. A number of attempts in developing ideal translator’s workstations using technology have been made, one of such stations is a Computer-Aided Translation (CAT) tool. CAT tools facilitate translators to increase their productivity and efficiency by providing them with some utilities, such as a Translation Memory and an Alignment Tool to support their translation works. This article highlights the usefulness of SDL Trados 2014, as one of the most widely used paid CAT tools, in translating the texts more effectively and in a timely manner. Further, it describes the basic steps in using SDL Trados and exemplifies SDL Trados 2014 translation results. A sample text was translated from Indonesian to English using both Across (a free CAT tool) and SDL Trados (a paid CAT tool). Eventually, the results of translating using both CAT tools appear to prove that SDL Trados helps the translators to translate more consistently, accurately, effectively and in a timely-manner.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how well the 10th-grade students in SMA Kartika Jaya 1-4 Pematangsiantar able to use past tenses in writing a narrative text. This paper uses a descriptive quantitative method in which the data is the students’ narrative text consisting of 20 verbs in past tense and past perfect tense. Based on the investigation, it is found that the 10th-grade students in SMA Kartika Jaya 1-4 Pematangsiantar can use past tenses in writing narrative text and their ability is in the medium level. There is one student at the highest level or 2.86%, the students who are able at the medium level ability are thirty students or 85.72%, and the students who are able at the lowest level ability are four students or 11.42%. The mean is 67.57 and the standard deviation is 14.46 where the validity is 0.79 and the reliability is 0.88. By conducting this study, it is expected the teachers get an insight into measuring students’ ability to use past tenses in writing a narrative text.

Abstract

The study of world literature focuses on how literary work circulates differently worldwide. It is through translation that literary work is circulated and interpreted differently worldwide. The difference in the reception of literary work across places and time is attributed to textual and extra-textual constraints in translation, such as ideology, power, poetics of the time, and institution. To understand how literary work manifests differently abroad than it does at home, critical reading of translation is needed in the study of world literature. The ccritical reading of translation can be done in two ways. The first way is by juxtaposing different translations of the same literary text to explicate the different translation strategies applied by the translators. The ssecond way is by identifying the remainders in the translation to disrupt the transparency of the translation. Both of these ways will reveal cultural differences between target and source culture, and also the influence of iideology, power, poetics and institution to the reception of literary text which varies across places and time.

Abstract

LGBTIQ has become a controversial topic concerning ones sexual preference over the past few years in Indonesia. Indonesian sexuality will always intersect with the norms, religious values and the state laws. Therefore, this phenomenon is socially binding as it restricts the identity construction of differing sexual preferences in Indonesia. The issue about sexuality particularly LGBTIQ is addressed in several Indonesian literature, given the significant and notable increase in Indonesian novels with LGBTIQ themes since 2000s. Taking the novels of Ayu Utamis Saman and Djenar Mahesa Ayus Nayla as the objects of investigation, this study examines (1) how Bourdieusian symbolic violence is being questioned in the novels (2) how these novels also challenge the hetero-normativity in Indonesia. The study reveals the symbolic violence towards the lesbian characters in the selected novels through the process of normalisation. However, by raising the issues of lesbianism, the novels and their circulation can somehow be seen as a form of resistance towards the Indonesian homophobic society.Keywords: symbolic violence, Indonesian novels, lesbianism, heteronormativity

Abstract

The main aspect of translation is how one’s expression in   one language is replaced with an equivalent representation in another language. The representation should be equivalent in terms of its stylistic, referential, and linguistic features. Whether there is a need for a translation text to be classified as "weak," "fair" or "good," its acceptability and the means of determining it as well as how to improve one’s translation quality were what we investigated in this article. National and international translation standards now exist, but there are no generally accepted objective criteria for evaluating the quality of translation. Therefore, such an assessment is needed to reveal the quality of the translation of a text from Indonesian into English. This article aimed to assess it using an alternative instrument and suggestions on how to improve translation quality which the authors adapted from NAATI (National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters). They adopted the stylistic, referential, and linguistic components of NAATI’s translation quality assessment. Based on the limited data that they had, a number of improvement procedures were recommended.

Abstract

This paper offers a discussion on the interconnection between teacher professional development, teacher learning and teacher identity and how reflective practice can optimize Indonesian EFL teachers development of professional identity. This paper provides some ideas for designing reflective activities to foster the development of teacher identity. It presents practical suggestions about how to incorporate reflections in learning activities during the Teacher Professional Education (TPE). The reflection model proposed by Kolb (2015) is preferred as it is considered to be simpler and more suitable in the context of TPE in Indonesia. The reflective practice during TPE is fundamental to promote lifelong teacher learner identity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine and determine the typology and the semantic functions of the reporting verbs used in the editorial sections of five Philippine online newspapers. Quantitative analysis was assumed in procuring the frequency counts and percentages of the data to be analyzed while qualitative analysis was applied in analyzing and categorizing the typology and semantic characteristics of the reporting verbs. The corpus of the study involved online editorial sections of five Philippine newspapers. Reporting verbs were highlighted or marked each time they appeared in every reporting sentence from the online editorials. Manual tallying was employed in obtaining the frequencies. Afterwards, the reporting verbs underwent examination and categorization for its typology and semantic characteristics. Findings show that the reporting verbs discovered from the online editorial sections were divided into five semantic categories. These categories were as follows: communication verbs, mental verbs, activity verbs, causative verbs, and verbs of aspect. Also, most of the reporting verbs found were from the communication category. As regards the typology, results show that all online editorial sections from the five Philippine online newspapers employed and examined used a significant deal of reporting verbs which were considered as public in reporting information.

Abstract

Most research on corrective feedback and learner uptake inspired by Lyster and Ranta (1997) has been conducted with students belonging to various age groups. This study was undertak- en to investigate the occurrence of corrective feedback and uptake in young children bilingual context whose age ranged from 5 to 6 or children in bilingual kindergarten in Indonesia. Transcripts of 100 minutes of lessons in Blossoms class of Satya Wacana Children Centre, Salatiga, were analyzed to answer these two research questions: (1) What types of learner er- rors lead to what types of corrective feedback in young children bilingual classroom? and (2) what is the uptake rate of each type of feedback and the relationship between learner errors, feedback, and learner uptake? The results revealed that the majority feedback provided for grammatical errors was repetition. The majority feedback given on phonological errors was recast. Then, explicit correction was the most frequent feedback for lexical errors. This study also found that elicitation and repetition led to the highest uptake rate. Although recast in this study did not lead to a high uptake rate compared with other types of feedback, in the case of phonological errors, recast did lead to a high uptake and repair rate. This study also provided an integrated picture about the relationship between learner errors, feedback, and learner up- take. Overall, there were differences in the patterns of feedback and uptake between this study and previous studies, which were interpreted with the reference to the unique character- istics of the instructional context.
