Abstract

Researchers have been studying pre-service and in-service language teacher identity for more than two decades across countries. However, there is few research conducted in Indonesia regarding in-service language teacher identity in an international school. The present study aims at investigating international school language teachers’ prior experience and current teaching enterprise in redefining their professional and personal identity. The study employs qualitative method embracing questionnaire and in-depth interviews. There are 6 participants including teachers of Indonesian, English, Chinese, French, and Spanish language subjects. This study found that language teachers at AHS perceived their professional identity through the production of metaphors and the recalling of past and present teaching enterprise. Further exploration on the language teacher identity construction in Indonesia is then needed.

Abstract

Indonesia consists of many islands, cultures, ethnicities, and religions. This country will be strong if its people would like to live and work together peacefully. It can be done if they accept their differences and want to work together as one nation. The spirit should be taught since the elementary schools until universities. Thus, the curriculum, teachers, and teacher training institutes should be pluralistic and multicultural. Indonesian schools should provide and improve the pluralistic and multicultural spirit and environment, because there are still many obstacles in these matters.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2017.010102

Abstract

Gender gap in education has been Indonesian government’s big concern (Bappenas, 2013). The Ministry of National Development Planning of Republic of Indonesia has reflected data showing gender gap in academic achievement among boys and girls in Indonesia. They also realize the importance of catering for gender differences during teaching and learning process. They believe that providing single-sex education is an effective way to narrow gender academic achievement gap in schools. In this paper, single-sex education, coeducational education, and academic achievement become the core concepts to analyse this issue. The result of this investigation proves that single-sex education enables teachers to address gender differences in their classroom, enhances students’ motivation, and increases students’ participation in learning process. Finally, these are beneficial to students’ academic achievement. The discussion of this investigation brings implications for education practitioner to promote the implementation of single-sex education as it has positive impacts on students’ academic achievement. In addition, the discussion is expected to have implications for policy makers to consider the needs of implementing single-sex education to narrow gender academic achievement gap.

Abstract

Postgraduate students are expected to show more advanced writing skill than others. However, the writer observed that they still made some errors in their thesis writing. Having reread the theses written by graduate students, Linguistic Surface Category and Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt Krashen were utilized to analyze the data. It was found that syntactic errors (89%) such as subject-verb agreement (15.42%), tenses (15.71%), redundancy (13.14%), article (7.71%), and pluralization (6.28%) are the most frequent errors occurred. While lexical errors (11%) such as wrong selection of verb (5.14%) and adjective (3.14%) also still made by graduate students. The study revealed that intralingual interference still be the cause of the blunders in writing a thesis. It is hoped that the present study could initiate university students to contemplate that self- correction and self-awareness in making errors in scholarly writing are essential. Emphasizing more assignments in academic writing can be applied by the lecturers of higher education know students’ ability and train students to write academically. Faculty of teacher training of education should afford students with seminars and workshop of academic writing to motivate them to write and enhance their knowledge about academic writing.

Abstract

Apart from technical skills, people must also be educated in social values. This is pertinent in developing well-rounded, socially-aware students. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous developmental disability characterized primarily by atypical, repetitive, routinary behavior, as well as impairments in socialization and communication. Despite comprising approximately 1-2% of the worlds population, people with ASD are greatly stigmatized, leading to an overall lower quality of life for them. In order to address this stigmatization, awareness and empathy must be induced in non-autistic, neurotypical people. The rise of serious games or games with a purpose has provided a different avenue for spreading awareness to an audience whose primary interest lies in digital games. Multiple games have been created to spread awareness for issues such as war, cultural discrimination, and mental illness. This study aims to determine whether serious games can also be used to increase autism awareness and lessen the stigma against people with autism. This study makes use of the digital game In Someone Elses Shoes, which simulates some behaviors of a college student with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. For this study, 30 participants were asked to answer a survey on their perceptions on people with autism before playing the game. After which, they answered the same survey again to see if their perceptions had changed, and answered an additional self-report on how the game affected them. While there is minimal change in the perceptions of the players before and after playing the game, the self-report shows that majority of the players expressed feeling more informed about autism, showing a positive cognitive response. However, players reported that the game was not as effective at eliciting an emotional response from them, though they still expressed a willingness to aid someone with autism.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020103

Abstract

Psychological testing in schools is a beneficial activity that helps a student achieve their goals and helps diagnosed social, cognitive, or behavioral problems. This study aimed to assess the psychological test results of education students in a Philippine state university. The study utilized secondary data from 443 education students at the university. Descriptive measures and multiple regression models were employed in evaluating the data and determining the influencing factor of psychological test results, respectively. Results revealed that the selected demographic variables as gender, degree program, type of high school, and over- all grade point average have no significant association with the psychological test results of education students. Furthermore, this study has documented the robust and positive evidence that Mathematics and English grade point average contributed to the psychological test scores of the students. The results go to infer that students with a good background in Mathematics and English subjects in high school have a good foundation in analytical and logical thinking during college.

Abstract

Cultural Management could be defined as the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling material and nonmaterial culture to meet predetermined goals and objectives. Areas under the umbrella of Cultural Management include Arts Management, Museum Management, Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Cultural and Creative Industries, and Design Management. Over the last two decades, there has also been a growing number of academic programmes befitting the umbrella of Cultural Management, offered at undergraduate and postgraduate levels by institutions of higher education in Southeast Asia. This paper explores the current state of Cultural Management education in Southeast Asia, and thereafter, highlights possible synergies to align with ASEAN’s agenda. Several qualitative research methods were adopted, including content analysis, followed by thematic analysis, participant observations, and semi-structured interviews. This paper formally documents and discusses the Cultural Management curriculum of 10 Southeast Asian nations, using three key themes - top-down, bottom-up, and a combination of both top-down and bottom-up focus. Thereafter, the paper proposes two ways in which institutions of higher education in Southeast Asia could better synergize to meet the six strategies listed in the ASEAN Strategic Plan for Culture and Arts 2016-2025.

Abstract

As one of the most widely used international primary curricula in the world, the Primary Years Program (PYP) introduced by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) has significantly increased its number of world schools in the Asia Pacific region including Indonesia. With the increased number of IB World Schools in the country, there comes a need to prepare for teachers qualified for teaching using the PYP as their framework. Indonesian higher educational institutions are therefore required to not only prepare teachers qualified in their teaching profession but also those having an open mind towards international education in general. It is important, then, to have insights on what these pre-service teachers think about international primary education, especially about the PYP and its implementation in primary schools in Indonesia. These perspectives will make useful raw data on the characteristics of Indonesian primary pre-service teachers and their readiness to take their professional career in any international primary schools including the IB world schools.doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2017.010105

Abstract

This paper aims to explore art therapy methods that are able to become one of the complementary media to improve the communication skills of children with autism; explain concretely the contribution of art flexibility as a complementary media in communication therapy for autistic children; and explain the integration of the principles of therapy. These three topics will be explored using a number of theories about art therapy that have developed, as a research beginning on the development of methods of art therapy and art education for autistic children. The approach in this study uses the method of content analysis of the phenomenon of art therapy, which is implemented as a perspective to see the phenomenon of art education for autism in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2019. This study begins with a study of the development and patterns of art therapy which has been going on in Indonesia. Afterwards, the current foothold of art therapy will be known, and able to explain the reasons related to the development of art therapy in Indonesia. The results showed that the models of art therapy and art education for autistic children in Indonesia did not include the development of art therapy, learning methods through play, and did not understand the empathy space as a learning space for autistic children. Art exploration has good potential to be developed as a method of therapy and education for autistic children. That is because, art has the flexibility and natural nature of children, namely playing and making a sense of comfort, so that autistic children feel in one frequency with the teacher so that the educational and therapeutic process runs smoothly and optimally. The emergence of the concept of 3B (being, becoming, and belonging) in the space of empathy, increasingly claims that art cannot be separated in the world of learning in autistic children.
