Abstract

Programmed learning which consists of specially designed syllabus and CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) was designed to win English Online National Examination at John Pauls School. It emerged as an answer to the employment of combined curriculum at Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama School like John Pauls School where Cambridge curriculum is applied to prepare the students to take Cambridge International Examination as added value of the school and national curriculum which is provided at the final grade of each level, grade 9 and grade 12. The application of Online National Examination triggers the empowerment of information technology in formulating, designing, applying, evaluating and improving the Programmed Learning to its effectivity and efficiency. The success of the Programmed Learning application at John Pauls School may inspire other schools with combined curriculum to do similar things.DOI:https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020109

As for the solution, providing them with lively cultural – based English textbook is one of the ways. As the rule makers, goverments could provide more fees to the teachers and add research funds so that researchers are motivated to conduct better and larger scale of areas and participants.

Abstract

This research analyzes the engagement of English teachers who participated in the preparation of Teaching Profession Certification Program (TPCP/PLPG) in Sanata Dharma University. There were 70 English teachers from many schools in the Province of Central Java who participated in the online learning session before they follow the workshop session. The result of this analysis indicated that the level of active participation of the participants in the online learning session is very low. Although the mean score of the frequency of access (= 42.39) is above the expected frequency of access (24), the mean score of frequency of message (= 9.32) is far below the expected frequency of message (72). In addition, there are no significant differences between the engagement of male and female participants in both the frequency of access and the frequency of messages. Furthermore, the frequency of access indicates a weak correlation with the scores of final examination (r = 0.21, p .05), but the correlation between the frequency of access and the final examination scores does not significantly exist (r = 0.02, p .05). It is recommended that future attempts to carry out the online activities in professional development programs for English teachers should be focused on encouraging instructors and participants to be more engaged in the online learning environment.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020201

Abstract

From the results of pre-study questionnaires distributed to seventeen sixth-grade elementary students of SD Sanjaya Tritis Pakem District and SD Cahaya Bangsa Utama Yogyakarta, researchers obtained data that they had difficulty concentrating in learning because they prefer to play games. In fact, they will face the Regional Education Standardization Assessment (ASPD). Researchers were encouraged to help them doing mindfulness exercises so that they can exercise self-control when facing difficulties or temptations, with the guidance of “Becoming a tough person based on Ignatian Spirituality” module developed by the researchers. The development of the coaching module was carried out by researchers using the five-step ADDIE model, namely: (1) Analysis: distributing questionnaires to obtain information about the duration of time the sixth-grade elementary students spent to study and play games; (2) Design: compiling a grid of coaching modules. (3) Development: compiling a coaching module which then validated by a lecturer and teacher. The average score of the two validators showed a good result, which is 3.4 (from a range of values 1-4), meaning that the coaching module can be tested and published. (4) Implementation: the researchers conducted a trial at SD Sanjaya Tritis Pakem District which was attended by 15 students. (5) Evaluation: from the results of reflection, the students wrote down their intentions to manage the desire to play so they can focus on learning.
