Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of metacognitive strategies in learning critical reading among grade X students at SMAN 1 Paiton. Metacognitive strategies include three main stages, namely planning, monitoring, and evaluating, which aim to help students realize their thinking process during reading. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the application of metacognitive strategies was able to improve students' critical reading skills, marked by an increase in students' ability to understand text structure, evaluate arguments, and reflect on the reading process. Students' responses to this strategy were also positive; they felt helped in understanding the text more deeply and became more active in the learning process. This study recommends metacognitive strategies as an effective approach to improve critical literacy skills at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of the TOK (Imitate, Process, and Develop) method in improving short story writing skills among grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Besuk. The issues raised are the low writing skills among students and the lack of interesting and effective learning methods. This study applies a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, documentation, and analysis of student writing. The TOK method is carried out in three phases: the Imitate phase (imitating existing short story texts), the Process phase (changing some story elements), and the Develop phase (creating short stories independently). The findings of the study indicate that this method can help students understand the structure of short stories, develop ideas creatively, and produce writing with a more varied style. At the end of the process, students showed progress in terms of originality of ideas, story integration, richness of word choice, and the ability to convey moral messages through writing. These results indicate that the TOK method is effective for use in learning to write short stories at the high school level and can be an innovative choice in teaching Indonesian.

Abstract

Dreams are a vital element in human life, serving as a means of self-discovery and awareness of life’s meaning. This study aims to compare the struggles of the main characters in two cross-cultural novels—Home Sweet Loan by Almira Bastari and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho—using a comparative literature approach. The research focuses on a descriptive qualitative analysis of the protagonists’ efforts to achieve their dreams, examined through intrinsic elements of the novels. Data were collected through library research on both works. The results reveal similarities in the pattern of ups and downs experienced by the main characters in their pursuit of dreams. However, there are fundamental differences in the nature of the dreams and the approaches taken: Kaluna fights realistically within a modern urban socio-economic context to own a house, while Santiago embarks on a spiritual journey in search of life’s meaning through symbols and inner experiences. This research provides cross-cultural insights into human perseverance in facing life’s challenges. It also enriches readers' perspectives on the various ways dreams are interpreted, whether materially or spiritually, and highlights how literature reflects the psychological, social, and cultural dynamics of human life in diverse contexts.

Abstract

Women in society are stereotypically portrayed as captivating, beautiful, gentle, empathetic, and caring figures, emotional, and maternal, but also perceived as weak, foolish, slow, and unable to make logical and quick decisions. Meanwhile, men are considered as figures who can make logical decisions easily, brave, powerful, strong, intelligent, wise, and independent. The images that emerge for women and men occur due to the concept of gender, which is a trait that is inherent in both men and women that is socially and culturally constructed. This study aims to find the image of female figures contained in the kumpulan Dongeng Klasik Nusantara oleh Cerviena Susilo and identify the implications of discussing kumpulan Dongeng Klasik Nusantara oleh Cerviena Susilo on Indonesian language and literature learning in schools. The method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. The results show that the image of women that emerges is the self-image of women and the social image of women. The self-image of women is divided into two parts: the physical image of women and the psychological image of women, while the social image of women is divided into the image of women in the family and the image of women in society.

Abstract

This research analyses the use of the phrases ‘Ndasmu’ and ‘Hidup Jokowi’ in Prabowo Subianto's political speech through Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK) perspective. The research aims to reveal power relations, ideological conflicts, and their impact on public opinion in the Indonesian political context. A qualitative method with a document study approach was applied to analyse data from news, speech videos, and social media responses. The results show that both phrases operate on three dimensions of AWK namely, (1) The text dimension, where ‘Ndasmu’ functions as a tool of delegitimising critics through sarcasm, while ‘Hidup Jokowi’ builds a narrative of continuity of power, (2) The discursive practice dimension, with the production and distribution of discourse in non-formal spaces triggering polarisation of interpretations, (3) The social context dimension, which confirms the influence of hierarchical Javanese culture and the dynamics of post-2024 post-election politics. The implications of the research reveal that the rhetoric has the potential to erode the quality of democracy through the reduction of critical dialogue space, increased polarisation, and the reproduction of power hegemony. This research recommends increasing people's critical literacy and the ethical responsibility of political actors in using language as an instrument of public communication.
