Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled Commissive in the Novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. In doing this research the writer used Austin’s theory (1962). Austin classifies the utterance according to the illocutionary meaning, those are verdictives, executives, commissives, behabitives, and expositives. Commissive act is a speech act that asks the speaker doing something in the future. This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. The method that used in this research is the descriptive method. The data of commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down were collected from novel. The data found in this research are identified and classified based on types of commissive, and analyzed the meaning of commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down based on Austin’s theory. The result shows that the types and meanings found in the novel are promise (completing the tower, giving the building, and meeting with Marthin), engage (focus on, looking for smart people, giving a name, listening, seeing his sick father, building a hotel location, and buying a ticket), offering (read messages, lend money, and give advice), agree (Lara as an iron butterfly, Lara is bigger than her competitors, and beautiful city in Venice), intend (say something), guarantee (guard his father, complete the building, and Lara will success), mean to (go to New York), and declaration (assign new workers, send bert to London, and cancel the meeting). It is expected that the study can help the readers especially the students in learning pragmatics especially commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon.Keywords: Commissive Act, Novel The Stars Shine Down, Pragmatic Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is motivated by finding of problems that is to classify the taboo words in the movie“Bad Teacher”. Therefore, the writer identifies taboo words that are used in the movie with the aims to classify and describe the types of taboo words by using the theory of Wardhaugh (1986). The result shows that there are seven types of taboo words, those are taboo words related to mother in law, animal, sex, death, excretion, bodily function, and religion. Based on the theory of Trudgill (1974), there were eight types of taboo words in which they related to the magic, death, left-hand, family relationship, animal, sex, excretion, and Christian religion. This research uses descriptive method and conducted in three steps : first preparation, in this case the writer watches the movie to get a good understanding. Second, data collection, the writer accesses the internet to get the movie script, then the writer reads the script and find out the conversations that contain taboo words. Third, analyzes data descriptively based on the theory of Wardhaugh. After doing identification, classification, and analysis, the conclusion is that taboo words which are used in the movie are expressing the feelings anddescribing regards intimacy within a group.   Keywords : Taboo Words, Movie:Bad Teacher, theory:Wardhaugh, Trudgill.

Abstract

ABSTRACT             This research entitled “Stratifikasi Sosial dalam FilmDivergent produksi Summit Entertainment”. Present as a reqruitment for getting a degree S.S            The objectives of this research are to identify, describe, and analyze, social stratification in the film Divergent. The writer uses the theory of Lenski and Lenski and also Parsons to analyze the data and to find out the stratification. This research has been done by using descriptive method.            The methodology conducted consist of 3 phases those are Preparation, Data Collection, and Data Analysis. The data were taken from the Film Divergentthrough intrinsic elements such as character, action, and expression.The research findings show that “Social Stratification”is admitted alive by Neil Burger through “Film Divergent”. It depicted in the interaction among character, expression, and action in the film.Keyword: Divergent, social stratification, character, expression, action, faction.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this research is “Personal Pronouns in The Novel The Stars Shine Down By Sidney Sheldon ”. The objectives of this research are to identify, to collect and to analyze the form of personal pronouns in the novel. The data are collected by focusing on the use personal pronouns by the author of the novel. The problem of the research is : what are the personal pronouns in term of form and function in the novel The Stars Shine Down By Sidney Sheldon. I, she, we, they, can be subjects of a verb. Example : I saw it. He knows you. They live near here. Complements of the verb to be : Example : It is I. Me, him, her, us, them can be direct objects of a verb : Example : I saw her. Tom likes them. Those concepts above will be used for identifying and analyzing data. The result shows that the forms of personal pronouns in the novel The Stars Shine Down By Sidney Sheldon are in singular and plural forms. In terms of the function, there are personal pronouns that have the function as a subject, object, possessive adjective and possessive pronoun in the sentences.   Keywords: Personal Pronouns in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney  Sheldon, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT         In this research the writer investigates military hand signals in American film Black Hawk Down. This study is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the hand signals produced by the soldiers in film Black Hawk Down. The data were collected from the film Black Hawk Down. All the collected data, were analyzed by using the classification of Joseph Terry (2014), and descriptive method of John Best (1982).         The results of this research show that there are six forms of hand signals by the soldiers and their meanings that appear during the film. The first one is fist which means stop or freeze. The second one is numbers of finger pointing by the air which means noticing the time. The third one is pointing with index finger which means indicating direction. The fourth one is thumbs up which means good condition. The fifth one is finger pointing at the recipient which means giving order to someone. The last one is index finger pointing up and making a circle above the shoulder which means commanding to gather.         The writer also finds three other forms, and its meanings which are not listed in Terry’s (2014) classification. The first one is casting the hand which means ordering to go. The second one is clenching the five fingers which means ordering to distract. The last one is opening the index finger and thumbs which means taking over the opponent’s weapon.   Keywords:  Military Hand Signals, American Film Black Hawk Down

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION Diese Untersuchung behandelt sich über “Die Bildung des Nomens im Jugend Magazin (JUMA)”. Sie hat das Ziel, um die Bildung des deutschen Nomens zu klassifizieren, zu identifizieren, zu analysieren und zu beschreiben. Die Daten werden von Jugend Magazin (JUMA) bekommen. Die Untersucherin benutzt eine deskriptive Methode, um die Daten zu analysieren. In diesem Fall beruhen die Theorien der Analyse auf den Meinungen von Bünting und Bernd Naumann. Nach Bünting besteht die Wortbildung aus Zusammensetzung und Derivation oder Ableitung oder abgeleitete Wörter; und nach Bernd Naumann kann die Bildung des deutschen Nomens bei anderen Wortarten gebildet werden. Das Ergebniss der Untersuchung wird gesogen, daβ die Bildung des deutschen Nomens durch Expansion, Derivation und geprägte Wörter gebildet werden. Derivation besteht aus zwei Arten sind funktionale Derivation und semantische Derivation. In dieser Wortbildung gibt es die wichtigen Elemente und sie haben auch mehrere Bedeutung. Die Bildung des deutschen Nomens kann durch Nomen von Nomen, Nomen von Adjektiv und Nomen von Verben geschehen werden. Stichwörter: Wort, Nomen, die Bildung, Jugend Magazin (JUMA)

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, entitled “Error Analysis in the narrative composition of the students of SMAN 1 Langowan,” is an attempt to identify, classify and analyze the kinds of errors in the narrative composition produced by the students of SMAN 1 Langowan. This research gives contribution in terms of understanding the error analysis especially the errors of the narrative composition. Ellis’s theory was used to analyze the errors in the narrative composition of students of SMAN 1 Langowan. Data were taken from 40 students in XI IPA 5 of SMAN 1 Langowan by asking them to hand write a narrative composition at home in piece of paper about their experience when they were on holiday. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of errors made by students; they are omission, misinformation and misordering. Errors of omission made by students are omission of to be, omission of the ending for plural nouns, omission of a preposition, omission of auxiliary verbs (to be, to do, to have and modals), omission of an article, and omission conjunction. Errors of misinformation are misinformation of preposition, misinformation of auxiliary verb, misinformation of singular and plural nouns, misinformation of colocation, and misinformation of word spelling. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled Aspect Linguistik in English language and Manado-Malay language (Contrastive Syntax Analisis). The aims of this research are to identify, to classify, to analyze and also to contrast the aspect in English and Manado Malay language. This research is expected to contribute to the development of linguistics in particular the syntax study and also for those who want to know more about aspects.This research used a descriptive method. The English data were collected from books, while Manado Malay language data were collected from several native speakers who live in Warukus 3 Malalayang 1, Manado and Bible in Manado Language. The writer used Aarts & Aarts’s and Chaer’s theory in analyzing the data and Lado’s theory (1957) in contrasting both languages to find out their differences. The result shows that the kind of apects in English and Manado Malay language are progressive and perfective aspect. The differences in aspects between English and Manado Malay language are in English language the progressive aspect marked by to be + Ving, while in Manado Malay language it is indicated by the prefix 'ba' to express the ongoing event. Perfective aspect in English language are marked by -ed at the end of the verb, while in Manado Malay language the perfective aspect marked by ‘so’. Keywords: Aspect, English, Manado-Malay, Contrastive Syntax Analysis

Abstract

This study is written as an attempt to describe, analyze and contrast the terms of food in English and Mange language. The English data are collected from several English books and internet whereas the Mange Language data are collected from informants The descriptive method is used to describe and analyze the kinds of food by using Frisch in Hickerson’s theory. After describing the kind of food in English and Mange language, the writer makes a contrastive analysis by using Robert Lado’s theory in finding out the similarities and differences of both languages. The result shows that the kind of  terms of food in English and Mange language consist of two groups, they are solid food and beverages/drinks. Solid food consist of fruits, vegetable, bread, meat, fish and sea food, and cooked food. Beverages/drinks consist of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink.   Keywords: The terms of food in English, Mange Language, A Contrastive Asnalysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTS  In English there are two subclasses of verbs, those are lexical verb and auxiliary verb. Modals are a class of auxiliary verbs that are combined with the basic form to make verb phrase with a wide meaning. The study is an attempt to describe and analyze the modals in the novel “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks. The aim of this research is to identify and classify the form and meaning of modals. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data of modals have been taken from the sentences in the novel “The Notebook” and analyzed by using Azar‟s concept. The result of this study shows that pure modals forms which used namely Can, Could, Will, Would, Should, May, Might, Must. Special modals forms which are namely Have to. Semi modals which are namely Used to. The most frequently appear modals in the article is Would. This study can be continually done by analyzing modals in another literary works by using the concept of Azar.  Keywords: Modals, English, Novel “The Notebook”
