Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Error Analysis in Students’ English Writing at SMA N 1 Kawangkoan” is an attempt to to identify, classify, and analyze  the kinds of errors in the use of simple past tense made from students of SMA N 1 Kawangkoan. The signifiacance of this research are theoretically to to apply the theory of error analysis in English narrative writing and practically this research is expected to help students and readers to understand the error analysis in English narrative writings. In the preparation, writer reads some books and journals about error analysis and do a preliminary research. Data were collected by the students’ assignments about narrative writings. The method used in this research is descriptive. Ellis’ theory is used to analyze the data  of the narrative writing made by students of SMA N 1 Kawangkoan. The sample is taken from Students in 2 Binsus Classes which are Grade X Science Binsus and Grade X Social. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of error made by students. First,  Omission which 36% of students made error and get 9 types of omission . Second, Misinfromation  which 55% students made error and get 9 types of misinformation and the last Misordering which 9% students made error and get 3 types of misordering . These research shows that students are still confused in using the simple past tense in their writings. These research is expected to give contribution to  the education institutions in errors made by students so that the institutions can find a solution to overcome the errors in their English using. Keywords : Simple past tense, error analysis, writing

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research design entitled “Code Switching In Backpacker Community in Facebook” is an attempt to identify, analyze, and find the reason of code switching phenomena in backpacker community. The theory used in this researchareby Hoffman and Fishman and this research appliesadespcriptive method. The result of this research shows  that there are two kinds of code switching, intra-sentensial switching and inter-sentensial switching. The reasons of the happening of the code switching in Backpacker community are through its speaker, listener or opponent speaker’s sayings, changing situation of the presence of the third person, the formalchangesinto informal ones, change of subject, and itsprestige. Abstract

ABSTRACT                             This researchentitled “Grammatical and Lexical Cohesion in Malala Yousafzai’s Speech: “The Pen is Mightier than Sword” is the requirement to accomplish the Bachelor Degree at Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively the aspects of grammatical and lexical cohesion on the text of Malala Yousafzai’s speech. The theory used in this research is from Halliday and Hasan (1976). The theory focused on the aspects of grammatical and lexical cohesion.The grammatical cohesion consisted of reference(personal, demonstrative, interrogative pronoun), substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction.  The lexical cohesion consisted of reiteration (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, meronymy) and collocation. The text of speech is taken from the internet at www.theirworld.org and other relevant source from internet as a source data.The result of this research shows that there are 102 pronouns which consist of 79 personal pronouns, 10 demonstrative pronouns, 13 interrogative pronouns, and there are 5 subtitusions, 83 conjuctions consist of 62 additive conjunctions, 5 adversative conjunctions, 8 causal conjunctions, 8 temporal conjunctions, and also in lexical cohesion there are 11 repetition, 16 synonym, 4 antonym, 1 hyponym, 3 meronymy, 5 collocation. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Prinsip Kesopanan dalam Ujaran Mahasiswa Semester 6 Jurusan Sastra Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Budaya: Suatu Analisis Pragmatik” focuses on maxim related to the principle of politeness. The problem of this research are: what kinds of politeness principle are in the utterances used by 6th semester’s students at English Department Faculty of Humanities and what function of politeness principle are in the utterances used by 6th semester’s students at English department Faculty of Humanities. The purpose of this research is to identify,clasify,analyze, and describe the function and type of politeness in maxim used that can be shown in daily activities from students in 6th semester’s English department Faculty of Humanities. In collecting data, the writer concentrates on the utterances which contain the principle of politeness produced by their activities in class. The collected data are analyzed based on Leech’s theory. The result shows  that there are six types of maxim from the utterances of students in 6th semester’s, they are: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxi, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and other readers in learning the pragmatic aspects, especially about maxim in politeness principle. Keyword: Politeness, Utterances, Pragmatic

Abstract

ABSTRACTA moral message is a message or lesson conveyed by the author to the reader or listener directly or indirectly with a spesific purpose for example is the moral messages found in the Novel “The Color Purple”, one of the most popular novels written by Alice Walker in 1982. Most of her writings focus and symbolize the struggles of African-Americans, Particulary woman, and their witness against societies that are racist, sexist, and violent. The problems of this research is : what are the moral messages in “The Color Purple” and how are the moral messages portrayed  in this story. This research use deskriptive method, which describes the extrinsic and intrinsic element in a literary work by using pragmatic theory of Abrams in The Mirror of the Lamp who conceive study literary works that focus on the effects of literary works to the reader. Based on this research, the writer analyzed the moral messages in this novel into two parts, that is Positive moral messages which are describe through several literary media involve: Story of Titles, Main Character,A Supporting Character (Shug Avery, Sophia Butlers), Interaction between Characters (Celie and Nettie, Celie and Shug Avery, Mary Agnes and Sofia). Negative Moral Messages that is Sexual Violence, Free Sex, and Same-sex Relationship (Lesbianism). Keywords : The Color Purple, Novel, Moral Messages.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research entitled “Prepositional Phrases in Academic Journal Article of the English Teaching Forum, Volume 41, No.4, 2003” is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the types of prepositional phrases in terms of forms and meanings in academic journal article. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The theories of Aarts and Aarts (1982), Frank (1972), and Foley and Hall (2003) were used in this research. The data of research were collected from three (3) different articles in journal of English Teaching Forum Volume 41, Number 4, 2003, and were identified, classified, and analyze in terms of forms and meanings. The results of this research show that there are 280 prepositional phrases, which classified in terms of form: the preposition can be followed by noun, noun phrase, pronoun, V+ing, Wh-clause, and prepositional phrase. In terms of meanings, it is divided into three: place, time (position), and place (direction).   Keywords: Prepositional phrases, meaning and form, academic journal article.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTIONIn  dieser  Untersuchung  wird  ȕber  das  Personalpronomen  und  das   Possesivpronomen  in  der  Deutschen  und  der  Selaru  Sprache  gesprochen.  Diese Untersuchung  ist  eine  kontrastive  Analyse  und  hat  das  Ziel,  um  die  Gleicheit  und  Unterschiede  des  Personalpronomens  und  Posessivpronomens  in  der  Deutschen  und  Selaru  Sprache  zu  identifizieren,  zu  klasifizieren,  zu  analysieren,  und  zu  beschreiben.In  dieser Untersuchung  benutzt  die  Schreiberin  deskriptive  Methode.  Als  die  theoretische  Grundlage  verwendet  die  Schreiberin  die  Meinung  von  Griesbach  (1981)  und  Zabrocki  (1980).Die  Datenquelle der  Selaru  Sprache  werden  durch  das  Gesprȁch  mit  der  Informan  aus  Selaru  Insel  und  die  Datenquelle  der  Deutschen  von  einige   deutschen  grammatischen  Bȕcher  genommen.Als  Schluβfolgerung  findet die  Schreiberin,  dass  es  die Gleichheit  und  die  Unterschiede  zwischen  der  Deutschen   und  Selaru  Sprache   gibt.                                                 Schlüsselwörter : Pronomina   Deutsche  sprache  und   Selaru  Sprache   kontrastive  Analyse

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study, entitled “The Interrogative Sentence in The Film” Pitch Perfect by Jason Moore, is aimed at identifyng and analyzing the interrogative sentence found in the film. The data have been collected by focusing on the conversation among the characters in the film and analyzed based on Aarts and Aarts’ concept. Interrogative sentence is a sentence that contains subject and open with an auxiliary verb or a wh-word. Interrogative sentence which is open with an auxiliary verb is called yes/no question and another type of yes/no question that consist of statement appended to the question is called question tag. The result shows that there are three forms of interrogative sentence in English used in the film. Those are yes/no question, question tag, wh- question. Yes/No question can be answered by yes/no, question tag is a question that is added at the end of sentence, wh-question begins with a question word such as : who, what, when, where, why, how, whom, or which. In this film the characters or use interrogative sentence without a question word but with rising intonation. According to its functions in communications, interrogative  sentence can be functioned as question and reques.   Keywords: Interrogative Sentence, Grammatical Analysis, Film Pitch Perfect.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this research is “Figurative Languange in Robert Burns Poems” It is an attempt to analyze and explain the figurative languange and categorize it in accordance with the  types and meaning of figurative language itself. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively  the type of the figurative language in Robert Burns Poems used Laurance Perrine’s Theory (1983). The result shows that this research can be summarized as follows: first, in the poems of Robert Burns, there are seven types of figurative language, including: personification, methaphors, simile, irony, symbols, synecdoche, and hyperbole. The personification and  hyperbole types dominate every poem of Robert Burns. Second, the meaning of figurative language used by Robert Burns in his poems in general describe about love feelings, natural atmosphere, and social status in his era.   Keywords: Poems, Figurative language, Robert Burns.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Gambaran Stratifikasi Sosial dalam Drama Othello Karya Shakespeare” is intended to give explanation about the connection between the aspects of extrinsic, in this case, the sociological aspects such as social stratification; “status” and “honor” and intrinsic aspects which mainly stressing on the role of characters including their expressions, actions, and dialogues. The objectives of the research are to identify and analyze the methods applied by Shakespeare to describe the social stratification available in drama Othello. The methodology conducted consists of 3 phases namely; Preparation, Data Collection, and Data Analysis. The data were taken from the text Othello through “content analysis”, classified into intrinsic elements such as characters, action, expression, and dialog. In terms of analysis, a descriptive method is applied supported by data on the side of sociology namely social stratification (status and honor) to analyze the intrinsic elements such as expression, action, and dialog which found in the interaction among characters. The research findings show that “Social Stratification” is admitted alive by Shakespeare through “Othello”. It depicted in the interaction among character, expression, action, and dialogue in the drama.   Keywords: Othello, Social Stratification, characters, action, expression, dialog, content analysis, status, honor.
