Abstract

The teachers’ problems arise because there is still a lack of teacher skills in assessing learning needs for children with special needs, as a result the learning design and implementation is not optimal. This study aims to describe teachers’ constraints in implementing assessment skills for children with special needs using qualitative descriptive research method. The study involved 32 teachers representing 32 inclusive schools in West Java. The data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire and analysed using coding techniques. The results show some obstacles faced by teachers in assessing the needs of children with special needs such as the low level of teachers’ understanding in developing the instrument, unclear guidlinesfor the assessment, and the media and time to assess. Therefore, the assessment process is hampered and has an impact on the low quality of learning for the children in inclusive schools.

Abstract

Students with hearing impairment  have difficulty in hearing due to stiffness in speak organs so that their communication is hindered. The purpose of this research is to increase basic communication skill that is speech building. This research is quasi-experiment using interrupted time series design. The result showed that the value increased by 31,92 from 42,92 in pre-test to 74,88 in post-test. Intervention was in the form of prompting with reinforcement for motivating students. It is concluded that prompting technique significantly  increases the speech building ability of students with hearing impairment. Teachers are suggested to use this technique as an alternative for increasing children communication skill.

Abstract

This research is led by the scenario that involve the fathers, early intervention programs and well-being of children with special needs. Therefore, this research was to examine whether the three constructs orvariables have direct, indirect and intermediary relationship (mediator) using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The samples are 158 fathers who have children with special needs aged 4 to 8.The results of this research prove that measurement of seven items in three constructs is significant and suitable for Well-being of Children with Special Needs (Child Health, and Child Housing and Environment); Early Intervention Program (Individual Family Service Plan, and Screening); and Father Involvement (Process Thought, Shared Interest, and Time). In conclusion, this research has proved the major findings, implications, and contribution to be used for future research.

Abstract

A guided inquiry method emphasizes the process of searching for and finding the answers to the problem. The purpose of this method is to help students to develop intellectual discipline, use smartphones to facilitate the delivery of material that cannot be explained by theory alone but it needs illustrations. This study uses the quantitative method of one group pretest posttest. Data collection is conducted by observation and interview, then analyzed with Wilcoxon. The results of this study indicated that the value before treatment was 38.14 and after giving the treatment was 83. The conclusion is that there is effect of using the guided inquiry method through the use of smartphones on the outcomes of learning science.

Abstract

Not every child successfully passes the task of social emotional development at an early age so that various obstacles can occur, especially in children with autism. To overcome this problem, a program is needed to help achieve the task of developing the social emotional development of autistic children through an integrative holistic approach. The purpose is to produce a prototype of social emotional development program through an integrative holistic approach that meets valid, practical and effective criteria. Program development in this study uses the Thiagarajan‘s Four-D development model. The result is a prototype program in the form of a book and accompanied by implementation guidelines. The results show that the prototype is valid, feasible, and effective.. Thus, it can be concluded that a social emotional development program through integrative holistic approach is proper to be used.

Abstract

Deaf children usually face language difficulties which affect their writing skills. This qualitative research is conducted to introduce a sketching method that will improve children’s skills in writing Report in Bahasa Melayu. Scaffolding technique from Wood, Bruner and Ross is applied to lead deaf children in mastering writing technique proportionally. This experimental research involves 8 deaf students which are divided into two groups, namely experimental group and control group. Sample’s knowledge, personal experience and education level have been taken into consideration in the sampling technique. Pre-test Instrument, Post-test and semi-structured interview are used to measure the efficiency of this technique. Experimental group received writing intervention, guided by sketching of the essay structure in two phases, which are sketching phase and drawing and writing phase. Essays written during Intervention B are assessed based on the marking rubric prepared. The data is described descriptively to answer research questions. External validity depends on the ability of writing technique as a responding variable, affecting the manipulated variable, which is student’s writing ability. The findings in pre-test and post-test are compared. It is found that the mean of experimental group is higher, which is 8.5 compared to mean of control group, which is 0.5 after the intervention phase. When interviewed, all samples from the experimental group are interested to continue using this technique after the experiment. It is concluded that sketching technique is effective in helping deaf students to write a Malay language report.

Abstract

This study is mainly purposed to investigate the teaching method and approach used by the teachers in teaching special needs students in TK Al-Faizin, the learning problems (barriers) faced by teachers and the ways to solve these learning problems (barriers) of special needs student in TK Al-Faizin. This research is a descriptive qualitative research using observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. 3 steps of analyzing the data involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion by Miles and Huberman. The results revealed that the teacher used the model of group learning with safety activities and various learning methods based on theme-based approach. The problems (barriers) faced by teachers included value barriers, power barriers, practical barriers, and psychological barriers. To solve the problems, teachers adapt the curriculum, collaborate with the parent, improve their teaching competence through independent learning,  share with their peer teachers, and hold a parenting program once a month.

Abstract

Learning readiness and interest is an important element that has become an indicator for success in the learning process for special education students. Therefore, this research is conducted to study the effectiveness of Recreational Therapeutic Activities as an alternative method to enhance learning readiness and interest for special education students. Five special education students with learning problems and five teachers were chosen at a school in Tampin District, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. This research was conducted with action research using a qualitative approach which adapted the Honet & Mumford cycle model and the Herman Witkins Model. The data collection method is observation checklist adapted from The Taylor Academic Problem Indentification Checklist. Data were collected for 8 weeks in two cycles to see the effects of therapeutic recreational towards cognitive, emotional and social domains. The data were analyzed and explained qualitatively by theme. The findings show that the effects of recreational therapeutic activities can enhance the readiness and interest in learning of special education students with learning problems in the aspects of cognitive, emotional and social domains. The most dominant domains are cognitive and emotional domains. The findings of this research can be used as a guideline by special education teachers to enhance learning readiness and interest of special education students.
