Abstract

The study of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s authorial style has been an intriguing one, and many studies have tried to examine his style that more or less set the path of American Literature. In this study, I intend to further such studies and explain how Hawthorne’s omniscient observations as the narrator in his earlier short story, Sights from A Steeple, can actually be related, and is applied, to his other, later short stories and works. In the process of doing so, I intend to explain the defining style that Hawthorne follows in most of his short stories. The narrator in Sights from A Steeple, seen acting as the author himself, has an unusually superior power of observation, using to give judgments and insights into the characters and events. These characters, events, and insights are then developed into similar but more detailed characters and significant events in Hawthorne’s short stories: Wakefield, My Kinsman, Major Molyneux, Rappacini’s Daughter and  Artist of the Beautiful. In this way, Sights from A Steeple acts like snapshots of Hawthorne’s other short stories.

Abstract

This research examines Keiko Furukura’s character development influenced by the convenience store as the main spatial setting in Sayaka Murata’s novel entitled Convenience Store Woman (2018). The study is a literary criticism which uses the theory of New Criticism, especially its argument that centers on the analysis of the main character in the story. This research proposes that spatial settings can become one of most determinant factors to affect the character’s development in the story. The finding proves that the store is influential to the main character’s development as it plays as the character’s life-anchor to evaluate, measure or even, eventually, decide how worthy the main character is as a human.

Abstract

This study intended to use “The Yellow Wallpaper” as a case study to demonstrate how illness narratives can be used to form an empathetic connection with respect to patients’ anxiety, predicaments, trauma, or other health problems and, further, to reach self-identification and justification. To achieve the research objectives, the study used Charon’s illness narratives regarding attention → representation → affiliation and Engel, Zarconi, Pethel, et al.’s six narrative skills as a framework to examine how the nameless female narrator struggles to reach her own female identification and subjectivity in a gender-discriminated patriarchal hegemony, but gradually becomes hysterical, losing her mind, and finally, going insane.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the formal and casual register used by the characters in the movie “Run” 2020. This research uses the qualitative type of research and uses the descriptive approach to analyze and identify the data obtained. The data were analyzed using Martin Joos’s theory of register. Based on the result there are 10 pieces of data obtained from the movie. The data identified as 2 data (20%) is formal register and 8 data (80%) is casual register. The casual register dominates the result because in the movie there is no such circumstance that requires to use formal register. The investigation shows that field and tenor factors influence how the register is used in communication by interlocutors.

Abstract

This study explores thirst tweets as sexual objectification with women as the writers and men as the targets, and the reason this phenomenon is allowed by society. As a new trend by BuzzFeed, thirst tweets are a set of tweets where mostly women compliment celebrities’ bodies. The data were gathered from a playlist video under the account BuzzFeed Celeb on YouTube. Firstly, Fairclough’s (2013) CDA and Langton’s (2009) Sexual Objectification theories were used to analyze the social relations of thirst tweets with sexual objectification. Secondly, watching the celebs’ reactions and comparing it to Berdahl et al. (1996) answered public’s tolerance in objectifying men. The results show that the construction of thirst tweets is in the form of reducing to the body and appearance, using violent language, and calling the celebs ‘daddy’. Also, the celebrities’ reactions and power play an important part in that the objectification is justifiable. While few felt uncomfortable, the male celebs still act polite by thanking the writers. Writers, as the consumers in a fandom, felt they are entitled to objectify these celebrities.
