Abstract

This article aims to get a better understanding of the text-picture interaction and, in particular, the pragmatic consequences of 150 online memes that feature puns, one of the linguistic humor subgenres. This article will analyze a corpus of 150 memes. Using a comic taxonomy by McCloud (1994). The internet memes then were to be categorized. The default taxonomy of categories produced the following classification of internet memes: word specific (28), picture specific (2), additive (29), and interdependent (91). The findings show rather significant disparities among the findings. Some categories in the original taxomony are even absent in the data set.

Abstract

The development of a Teaching Plan for a Semester (TPS) is directly related to the analysis of competency standards to be achieved, teaching methods, and learning evaluation. Based on that, the specific targets to be achieved in this research include two things. The two objectives are (i) to formulate graduates' English learning outcomes based on needs analysis and objective analysis of input English proficiency and (ii) to design learning materials to meet the formulated learning outcomes. In general, the research method used is the development research method of Gall, Gall, and Borg (2003) and Van den Akker, Gravemeijer, McKenney, and Nieven (2006). Meanwhile, the approach used in this study is a combination of the ADDIE approach from Branch (2009) and the systems approach from Dick, Carey, and Carey (2009). The results of the study show that the level of English language needs indicated by stakeholders must be adapted. This adaptation is based on input competencies that do not meet the standards to be put into the ESP stage purely. Therefore, the design of the ESP lesson plan is still carried out by considering matters related to the input ut general English competence

Abstract

Since books are a repository of knowledge, reading habits aid students in being more prepared for a wider range of aspects in life. However, among Indonesian students studying English as a foreign language (EFL), the belief that reading is merely a hobby is still prevalent. Since reading is not their pastime, this provides a justification for people who don't want to read. This study was intended to investigate English reading habits of EFL students. A follow-up interview guide and a questionnaire were used in a mixed-method approach. The questionnaire was given out to 203 eleventh graders at SMAN 1 Purwosari, Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The results demonstrated that the majority of eleventh grade EFL students did not exhibit proficient English reading habits. Despite, most of the students considered reading in English was a useful and enjoyable pastime that they typically engaged in during their spare time. Additionally, they listed a number of issues, the primary one being that they had not been exposed to reading English-language literature at an early age and that was why they preferred to read in their own tongue. This study has highlighted the necessity for educators and parents to create a calm and pleasant reading space for their children in order to foster positive English reading habits.

Abstract

The implementation of Merdeka Curriculum has made English to be included as local content at the primary school level. Abstract

The disparity between Engineering Education and the imperative for English language proficiency remains significant. Frequently, engineering students exhibit a deficiency in practical English skills, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), a necessity for their forthcoming careers or advanced pursuits. In response to this challenge, this study seeks to carry out a need analysis of the English language within the domain of Automotive Engineering Education. Executed as a literature review, the study meticulously examines pertinent journals and scholarly texts on ESP. Additionally, it incorporates interviews with English language professors at the tertiary level to ascertain appropriate English language content suitable for inclusion in Automotive Engineering Education curricula. By drawing upon the analytical framework of Basturkmen and Dudley-Evans' Need Analysis, in conjunction with the methodology of St John & Saint John, the research delineates and assesses these identified needs within the context of Automotive Engineering Education programs. The investigation discerns the specific language components pivotal for facilitating effective communication within the sphere of Automotive Engineering Education

Abstract

Cartoons as a medium of social criticism have been increasingly popular for the last decades. Famous cartoons targeting adult audiences like South Park and The Simpsons heavily tackle the politics and events in the USA. Children’s cartoons can be equally critical and political. However, scant scholarship still explores the political dimension of children's cartoons. This study aims at filling the scholarly lacuna by looking at how SpongeBob SquarePants, a cartoon dedicated to children, conveys its political message, specifically examining the Krabby Kronicle episode (2008); this article demonstrates that the episode heavily criticizes the practice of yellow journalism through the use of allegory. The allegory is utilized in the narrative to deliver the political message as they try to compare the practice of yellow journalism in the Krabby Kronicle episode and the actual practice of yellow journalism. The allegory is supported by the cinematic (mise-en-scene) aspect of the episode to make the narrative not only entertaining but also make the message believable.
